Gilfillan 9th in National 50

James Gilfillan (Contre la Montre) clocked 01.48.54 to claim a top ten finish in the National 50 championship on the S100/50 in Cornwall. Winner was Michael Hutchinson, who once again beat former Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler, Matt Bottril into 2nd. British Best All-Rounder, Jeff Jones took the bronze medal. Ringwood -based Gilfillan commented "
The conditions for the men’s race were considerably better than the women’s, and as at the Nat 25 the time of day had a big influence on the conditions and approach. Having driven the course on sat aft/eve in the heavy rain and seen the conditions, spray and riders climbing off left right and centre (inc Julie (Shaw) after 10 mins of racing) I was quite uncertain as to whether to race or not. The 3 lap course was largely based on the A30 dual carriageway, with a brief foray onto the old A30 each lap. The wind was blowing down the length of the course making westerly progress out to the turn somewhat slower than the return leg. By the time I reached the far turn on lap 3 I was suffering but knew the final return leg, being wind assisted, would be marginally easier so had pushed as hard as I could to get there. Being off No.12 trying to finish first was a personal goal, which I did achieve, finishing in 1:48:54, first place at the time! But not for long and ended up 9th. Successfully achieving my pre-race goal of a top-10 finish. So happy to have raced in the end! The weather held dry-ish, the traffic was low, the marshals and signage good, I can’t comment on the women’s race, but it wasn’t nice racing conditions or for driving and Cornwall is flipping miles away!"

In other local news James Gilfillan(Contre la Montre) won the Alton CC 50km
Gilfillan said...“I think the big thing from my point of view was putting 30secs into Jules on the opening 1km prime, straight up the hill from the start! It’s a good circuit, perfect for the all-rounder shame they don’t use it for more events and every year, perhaps then it’s get a bit more support. Couple of weeks off racing for me, mainly due to lack of events locally, before hitting some longer distances in May!”

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler 2nd claim, Sarah Storey (For viored) won the Chesire Classic Womens Road Race. Storey finished with 56.02 good enough for 7th in the Manchester & Dist 25 on Saturday.

Local Cycling News

As usual the dog days of summer take their toll on the local racing calender. Jay Eastwood brought the curtain down on the Moreton Road Race Series,

open time trials are few and far between and club events will come to an end in a couple of weeks. James Gilfilan (Team Feat)gave the Alp D'uez Triathlon a miss, perhaps his efforts in the RAAM finally caught up with him. Perhaps not, Gilfillan finished in an excellent 4th place in round 5 of the Rudy Project TT series in Worcester.

The final round of this national series will be promoted by the Poole Wheelers. The undulating, 16 mile course through Wareham Forest and around Bere Regis was tested by Bournemouth Jubilee in their 32 mile event back in June. Claire Day (Born to Bike)looks set for her best ever placing in the British Best All Rounder Competition, (BBAR). Day is currently lying in third place in the table, Riders best times over 25,50 & 100 miles are combined to give an average speed. With times of 58.24, 1.58.39 & 4.11.45 giving an average of 24.934, Claire is in with a great chance of a medal and with her team mates handily placed the team award looks secure. Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) easily won the Poole Wheelers club 10 on Sunday on the Ski Slope course.

His 30mph plus ride of 19.46 giving him a winning margin of 1.04 over Paul Jones (BJW) August is a lean month but September will arrive with more races, settled weather

and for those who like it when the road goes up, Hill Climbs.

Bournemouth Cycling Centre's Alan McRae says “Starting from scratch, in just 4 weeks, nearly 500 individual track cycling opportunities have been provided" What Alan really means is things are going well at the new track!!

Local Cycling News

Jay Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) won the final round of the Moreton village series in fine style. Eastwood had already wrapped up the overall, easily defending the title he won last year with 7 victories in the 13 race series. Training on the track has sharpened the speed of the Hargroves rider. Fifty one starters lined up for the final race, once again blessed with bright sunshine.

The fast, flat circuit is made for sprinters and when the scratch group brought the race together the odds on Eastwood shortened. Steve Dring (Echelon-Rotor) had a dig on the bell lap but was not allowed to get far.

Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) & Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) tried hard but were resigned to the minor placings. Organiser Peter Washington adds a nice touch to the final race each year; free entry and free tea and cakes post race put a smile on everyone’s face and race sponsors, Alyson France Solicitors, provided bidons and mussettes.

A co-operative approach to this year’s racing, with riders marshalling at least one event has proved a success. Peter is stepping down next year but is keen for the series to continue. This year saw 600 riders sign on for the 13 races; £600 was raised for the St Johns ambulance and £390 for the Moreton Village hall.

Hire bikes are available for those without their own track bikes. The Jubilee’s Richard Eastham is currently completing his British Cycling Level 2 Track Coaching Qualification. In order to do this, he needs to organise and deliver 6 x 1 hour coaching sessions. This series of evening summer sessions will therefore contribute to his coaching certificate. The Bournemouth Cycling Centre is located at Slades Farm Open Space in Ensbury Park, Bournemouth. The nearest post code is BH10 4EP. James Gilfillan (Team Feat) has dominated the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers open Time Trials this season.

The Poole based triathlete won the 50 mile test to add to the 25 mile crown he won last month. Gilfillans winning time of 1.49.55 was nearly 4 minutes clear of Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) with 1.53.11. Gary Dighton (Poole Wh), 1.54.22, secured third spot. Terry Icke and Richard Davidson backed up Dighton to win the team prize for the Poole club. The event incorporated the Wessex Veterans championship with Icke’s time of 1.56.36 giving him the title. Gilfillan is off to the French Alps next for the Alp D’Huez triathlon. The 110 km cycling stage includes the 21 hairpin bends of the famous Tour De France Mountain.
• Claire Day (Born to Bike) made the long journey to Norfolk to ride the East District CA 100 mile TT. Day has already won a team gold medal at the national Championships, three weeks ago. Things got even better for the Winton Based rider as she recorded a personal best time of 4.11.45. Meanwhile, around the clubs evening time trials are into the last few weeks. Colin Humm has won the New Forest CC 25 mile title. Gary Dighton & Terry Icke are battling it out for the Poole Wheelers championship and Nick Spencer looks to have secured the Bournemouth Jubilee best all-rounder title. Pete Wilson consistently performs for the Arrow, while John Chapman is the man to beat at the CC Weymouth events.

• Para-Cycling champion, Darren Kenny OBE has just returned from racing in Italy. Kenny was part of a Great Britain team riding a 2 day event in Brescia, east of Milan.

Points earned from racing this year will count towards selection for next years Paralympic games in London. Verwood based Kenny struggled in the road race but won the following days 15km Time Trial to take maximum points.

Next up will be the World Road Championships in Denmark in September.
