Hugo Walters (NFCC) talksTempo, Geraint Thomas & Kenyan Marathoners!
New Forest CC’s promising youngster, Hugo Walters, has been taking his exams and is probably fed up with answering questions but he agreed to answer a few more for “E D”. Hugo,15, is studying at King Edward VI School in Southampton and does not appreciate the 45 minute each way journey eating into his training time! Walters, it seems, is into every aspect of cycling and is serious about his training. Dad Patrick is also in the New Forest club and they often train together. . “ My sister Jemima isn’t really into cycling so my Mum generally stays with her whilst my Dad takes me to most races.” Earlier this year they left mum Emily and Jemima at home and spent a week training in Denia in Spain. “We took in some Vuelta climbs, the first time I have ridden Grand Tour climbs” Walter may well be a name to watch and he clearly loves his cycling so the first question was pretty obvious…………
How did you get involved in cycling?
HW “I’ve been riding since I can remember but i only seriously started riding when I was around 11 doing a lot of mountain biking it was around the time of the Beijing Olympics and I was pretty inspired by Julian Absalon’s win and all the British medals. For my 12th birthday though I got a road bike, it was a really nice 43cm frame bianchi womens bike covered in a flower paint job so I stuck stickers over all of the frame and got out cycling. From there i started doing races and ive been enjoying it ever since.”
What is your favourite discipline and least favourite?
HW “I favour road cycling to other disciplines but I don’t have any I actually dislike. This coming winter I’m going to do cyclocross for the first time and that looks like really good fun. I’ve been watching a lot of the Belgian races on the website Sporza.be through the winter and it looks like a lot of fun. I enjoy the track too but I don’t really see my future on the boards if I’m honest. I think my future is going to lie with more hilly races. I think I fit the climber/sprinter mould and my uncle is Italian and they’re moving back out to Tuscany so I hope to go there some time for holiday and get some racing in on the continent. I think the racing over there would suit my current build more.”
How much and what sort of training are you doing and how do you fit it in to your weekly schedule?
HW “I do quite a lot of short, high intensity efforts around my school terms mainly due to time constraints due to exams and homework. I’ve got a coach, Colin Batchelor (total cycle coach) so he writes up my training plans although come the holidays I can get out on the roads for 3+ hours every day and get some specific training done. My favourite ride is probably cycling over to Brockenhurst and riding through Ornamental drive and then up Bolderwood Hill which is a pretty nice route if you’re riding after school and the sun is shining down. If my sensations are good I will try to ride Bolderwood hill at tempo and then at the top refuel and turn right and descend to Lyndhurst which is always a pretty fast from there I ride to Beaulieau and will have a cafe stop there before riding home at tempo.”
Do you enjoy any other sports?
HW “ I don’t really compete in any other sports but I do follow a few other sports. I’ve got quite a lot of respect for triathletes my favourite is Chris “Macca” McCormack. My dad was born and brought up in Kenya (like Chris Froome) so I watch a bit of athletics from time to time. Sorry but I always support the Kenyans rather than the British in running. You’ve got a pretty high chance of watching a Kenyan winning in the marathon.”
Who inspires you?
HW “I’ve got a lot of respect for anyone who makes it to a professional level in cycling. My favourite cyclist is Jeremy Powers. I’ve been watching a lot of the series behind the barriers which is a reality TV show about Powers who is an American Cyclocross pro. I like his really relaxed attitude before races and just how chilled out and funny he is before races and then can still perform (he won the US national Cyclocross championships) My other favourite riders are Vincenzo Nibali, Joaquin Rodriguez and Fabian Cancellara. Nibali is not afraid to attack which I like and he’s one of the best descenders in the pro peloton, someone willing to take risks on the downhill and that’s something I like. Cancellara is similar in that respect but in the classics he is in a league of his own and I like Rodriguez because he’s got a style of racing I would like to have when I’m older and he’s the same weight and height as me currently (although I don’t think that will last for long). I also have huge respect for the professional Cyclocross riders and my favourite is either Bart Wellens or Zdenek Stybar and out of British riders my favourite is Geraint Thomas. I’ve been lucky to ride with him for two days solid doing some of the Belgian cobbled climbs and he’s a really down to earth, nice normal guy.”
How has your season gone so far?
HW “This year has gone relatively well although it could have gone better. My main aim of the season was the North West youth tour but I didn’t get selected. I didn’t really understand the selection as they had 80 places and said they would do the selection on British cycling rankings and I was well in the top 70 but I’m not going to dwell on the past. I’ve done some RSRs with British Cycling and hope to do a few more Portsmouth races. I’ve got the Alps Open tour coming up in August which is an event in the French Alps where you cycle around 120km every day for 5 days over the French cols. There are usually a small number of French pros there so I am pretty excited to be able to ride with them. Due to that I have been doing a fair amount of endurance training in preparations. I did enter the BSCA national hill climb championships and came 2nd in the over 15 age category which I am pleased with as well becoming BSCA south of England champion for hill climbing, I will still be in the same age category next year so am looking forward to defending my title.”

Local Cycling News
New Forest CCs promising junior, Hugo Walters continues to impress. Riding in the latest round of the Calshot winter track league, Walters won the U16 scratch race and is another local worth watching. Walters has spent the summer road racing and riding time trials and aged 15 is an exciting prospect. The New Forest youngster received a special award at the recent prize presentation as club junior champion.
Also at Calshot, Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) won the U16 1km TT and the point’s race. Another talented 15 year old, Fielding recently spent time at the Newport Velodrome in Wales, at the invitation of British Cycling. Racing continues at the Calshot track every Sunday till February, with a two week Christmas break.
Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers winter reliability trial series is proving a real success story. The series has been going for over 30 years and the numbers of riders is on the increase. One hundred & twenty nine cyclists set out on the latest trial, the 100km event. Run mostly on small country lanes, the courses prove a real test of fitness and navigation skills. The next ride in the series will be the 75 mile event on the 15th January, widely regarded as the toughest of the 4 trial series.
Poole Wheelers will host round 9 of the Wessex Cyclo-Cross League on Sunday December 18th. The 4km course on the Sika trail in Wareham forest has a bit of everything. Organiser, Dave Wade says “It’s a great course, it will be challenging but also great fun” There will be a shortened version for U12s and youth riders. All riders will be eligible for the top prize; A one night’s stay for two at the 5 star Kemps Country House Hotel. All proceeds will go to the Rob Jefferies young riders fund. Popular local cyclist, Jefferies was tragically killed earlier this year whilst out training.

Local Cycling Stuff
Dorset’s Daniel Lloyd (Garmin-Cervelo) had to settle for 10th place at the Tour of Britain. The Bournemouth-Based professional had quietly worked his way up to 3rd spot in this 8 day race, picking up time bonuses to improve his position. However the 10km time trial on the split final stage saw Lloyd lose time and slip down the general classification. The fast, flat circuit in the heart of the capital passed Big Ben and the Tower of London and was won by Team Sky’s Alex Dowsett. Dutchman, Lars Boom of the Rabobank team won the overall race after taking the lead on stage 2. Lloyd has a busy end of season with races in France and Italy still to come. Talking to “E D” he said; “I have Franco-Belge starting next Thursday, then Paris-Tours, Piemonte and the Tour Of Lombardy, so a fair way to go yet”
Gray & Bjergfelt.
National U23 Cyclo-Cross Champion, Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) got his winter season off to a great start, winning the South West League event in Devon. Gray had a race long battle with Will Bjergfelt (Motorpoint Procycling),the pair swapped the lead several times as they lapped the field. Bergfelt slipped whilst passing a back marker on the last lap and Gray siezed his chance.
It was a good test for the Broadstone-based rider. The previous day he had finished 3rd in the opening round of the Wessex League at Cowley, Oxford. Gray will be basing himself in Oudenaarde in Belgium for the Cross Season and will be competing in the GVA series and several other high ranking cross races. Gray will return for selected national races and intends to defend his U23 title at the National Championships.

In-Form Paul Jones (BJW) was narrowly beaten into 2nd place for the 2nd week running.

Terry Icke (Poole Wh) claimed 3rd with 55.32 in the Sotonia 25 mile event at Andover

NEW Forest CC crack juvenile Hugo Walters took a deserved fourth place in a third category adult circuit race at Alexandra Park, Portsmouth and followed through with a win in his club’s hill climb competition.Since having gained special permission to race with the seniors, Hugo, who is now 15 years old, has raced against Elite and first and second category riders at Alexandra Park, his best in those quality bunches being a 27th place. Then last week he competed in a third cat event, over 40 minutes plus three laps. In the final minutes Mitch Webber of Andover Wheelers broke away from the main field. Hugo and two others launched an attack to bridge the gap. Despite gritting their teeth and giving their all, they could not catch the flying Webber. But Hugo ended up fourth, his best placing in an adult field. In the third category race, New Forest CC teammates, dad Patrick Walters took 10th place and Graham Jones seventh.Flyweight Hugo had wings on Buddles Hill and then Ogdens Hill near Fordingbridge in New Forest CC’s hill climb on Sunday. He clocked 1min 44.7sec on Buddles to beat Jamie Pope by 13.3sec. Sam Jackson was third with 2-2.6. Shortly afterwards Hugo nipped up Ogdens Hill in 37.2sec to beat his father into second by four seconds.Pope, last year’s overall winner, failed to start at Ogdens. In the Sotonia CC open 25-mile between Andover and Popham on Sunday, John Heffernan recorded another personal best of 56-25 for eighth place, beating second claim member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) into ninth by 25secs.
Gary Lock, who has recently produced acrop of fast 10 times, also clocked a "personal" dipping underthe hour for the first time with 59-42 for 14th.
Spare a thought for Forest veteran Terry Jefferies who punctured twice, once while warming up and then again six miles into the competition, Unsurprisingly, he did not finish.
Hill climb times, Buddles Hill: Hugo Walters 1min 44.7sec, Sam Jackson 2-2.6, Stuart Peckham 2-6.0; Ogdens Hill: H Walters 37.2secs, P Walters 41.4, S Peckham 43.6; Aggregate for overall: H Walters 2-21.9, Jackson 2-28.8, Peckham 2-49.6.
Julia Shaw (Drag2Zero) placed 17th in the Elite Women's Time trial at the World Road Championships in Copenhagen.

I was saddened to hear of the death of Eddie Beck (Poole Wheelers) last week. Eddie was always good company when marshalling at Holes Bay or some other windswept junction. Eddie was also a keen follower of "E D" and was always very supportive. See you up the road Eddie Beck.
