Dorset Miles: Bournemouth Jubilee 100km Reliability Trial
The Cowgrove is always the cyclist’s choice, a safe conduit between Wimborne Minster and Blandford Forum. A gateway to the hills and lanes of West & North Dorset. The pleasant, twisting route with the occasional rise and fall wins hands down, when the alternative is the B3082, Badbury Rings road. The downside of this well wheeled route is it floods; throw in sub- zero temperatures and it’s an ice rink. More than a few of the 89 starters in the 100km reliability trial came down. Some abandoned, some opted for the B3082, and some carried on with both feet unclipped. The gravel at the edges offered purchase but threatened punctures and two came in quick succession. By Shapwick though the drama was behind us and the remaining miles passed without incident. The climb up from Winterborne Stickland is a conversation stopper and goes on and on it seems. The reward though is the descent through Milton Abbas and with practically no wind it was turning into a perfect winter's day. Flooding at Milborne St Andrew, the spray was cold on the face, then on to Briantspudddle and Bovington camp. Over the level crossing at Wool, the road across to Coombe Keynes & East Lulworth always asks some questions and the climb up above Cocknowle is steep but short. Corfe Castle makes you look up but turning left it is soon behind us. A good tempo across Middlebeare Heath and then into Wareham, the constant up and down of the “100 k” always starts to tell and the forest road up to the A35 is a bit of a chore! East Morden, Lytchett Matravers, Corfe Mullen, Merley, tea and cake! Organiser Mike Walsh is as benevolent as always, signing us all back in with no more than a cursory look at the clock. The ride out and home gives me an 18 mile bonus. 4hrs 45 (50 finishers)

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 25!
Cancelled back in July due to torrential rain, the re-run BJW Summer 25 effectively became the Autumn 25. Arm & leg warmers are reminiscent of February and a timely reminder that another season is drawing to a close. Optimistic plans are already being made for next year, better, harder training, and sensible diet but all too often they founder on the rocks of Christmas, are washed out to sea at New Year and are finally sunk by February’s chest infection. Yet next year could be “the year”. Gary Dighton came out on top in this near all-local spat, his time of 52.39 confirmation that the sofa and a foaming pint have been well earn’t. Simon Berogna (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) led the chasers with 53.23, 4 seconds ahead of Tom Alliban (Revo Racing). Next week’s Vets 2-up will bring the curtain down on Dighton’s season. “It’s been a good season, I am going faster than last year” Dighton is one who is already thinking of next term “I like the winter, I like doing the miles” he said.

Sotonia Open 10:

Cliff Rowe took second place in the Sotonia 10 on the P140 at Romsey. Rowe missed out on his first open win by just 8 seconds, Colin Yeates of the promoting club claiming the honours. Rowe clocked 24:00 on a very wet & windy midsummers evening, with Phil Evans 5th (24:41) & Kevin Ridge 6th(24:58), Jubilee comfortably took the team award. Dave Pickering (BJW) & Terry Icke (PW) both potential winners, opted not to start, presumably put off by the inclement weather.

Bournemouth Jubilee 20, Inter Club TT series rnd3
Dave Pickering (BJW) won round 3 of the inter club series on the Furzehill circuit. Pickering’s time of 48.16 for the two laps gave him a 29 second advantage over second placed Will Stephenson (Primera Specialized). Stephenson, riding a road bike finished 1:31 up on Cliff Rowe (BJW). Despite the bright spring sunshine only 20 riders signed on, sport on a Saturday afternoon proving to be no attraction. It’s a double-header weekend, with round 4 tomorrow (Sunday). The Poole Wheelers 15 starts at Wareham Station with the first rider off at 09:00

Inter Club Time Trial Series
The local time trial season gets underway in Dorset this weekend with the Poole Wheelers/Wessex RC 27km event on Sunday 26th. Entry is on the line with the first rider off at 10:00. Held on the Gallows Hill-Moreton circuit, the race is the first of six in an inter club series, with all of the events held on sporting courses. Points will be allocated in the same way as the popular end of season hill climbs. Participating clubs are Poole Whs, Bournemouth Jubilee Whs, CC Weymouth and Wessex RC. Of course these events are not limited to just these clubs and all are welcome. The idea is to add a bit of interest to these testing, early season club events and hopefully increase entries. Paul Hughes of Poole Wheelers describes the courses:

Sun 4th Mar 10:00. Poole Whs 15 miles Purbeck Hilly Circuit. A rolling start and finish with Whiteways Hill in the middle. Start in Holme Lane near the Springfield Hotel then via West Holme, East Lulworth, climb Whiteways Hill, descend Steeple, Church Knowle, Corfe Castle, Wareham bypass to finish in West Lane near the Springfield Hotel.

Sun 11th Mar 09:00 Poole Whs 15 miles Wareham-Gallows Hill Circuit P414. This is the same testing circuit that was used for the 2011 Rudy Project. Start at Wareham Station then past Silent Woman pub to Lane End then via Gallows Hill, Wool and Wareham bypass to finish at Wareham Station.
Sat 24th Mar 10:00 CC Weymouth 22 miles Moreton-Gallows Hill Circuit P436 (2 laps). This is the same course (but different start) proposed by Poole Whs for the CTT National Circuit Championships in 2013. A sporting course with a 2 mile drag up Gallows Hill from Wool. Start at Moreton, then via East Burton, Wool, Gallows Hill, Clouds Hill and B3390 to finish at Moreton.
Sun 25th Mar 09:00 Poole Whs 28 miles Round the Harbour P461. This is the revised edition of the old classic open event that used to start at Sandbanks and finish on the ferry approach at Studland. Due to traffic lights in the town and at Sandford, the new course starts at the Creekmoor Park and Ride and goes via Bakers Arms, A35, Woodbury, past the Silent Woman pub, Wareham Bypass, Corfe Castle, B3351 past the Purbeck Golf Club and through Studland to finish on the ferry approach. Note that transport will be provided to take kit from the start across to the finish.
