CC Weymouth 2-UP Club 10 p451 07/08/12

Steve Pink writes....Those of us who could drag ourselves away from watching Sir Chris Hoy and Vicky Pendleton’s final hurrahs round the Olympic track turned up for a damp(ish) and very breezy chase up and down the Warmwell to Wool course. The strong South Westerly meant that average speeds to the turn were sky high, but the journey back was slow and painful.

Poole Wheelers duo Terry Icke and Gary Dighton turned up fresh and well practised from their weekend 4-up and as per usual won with plenty of room to spare. CC Weymouth’s own Wayne Keble and Steve Pink overcame a lack of tactics to take 2nd and Matt Merritt with Andrew Jackson finished off the top three.

At this stage of the season we start looking to the club’s overall points competition. Top of the standing currently are:

1. Bryce Riglar 124
1. (=) Steve Pink 124
3. Greg Parker 123

Greg Parker is clearly the faster rider but may be hampered by availability. Steve Pink has been relying on consistency but with the points system, not allowing all races to count in full, is running out of events to score in. So the favourite has to be young Bryce. However with 2 evening races, the 5 race September Saturday series and the club Hill Climb to come there is still all to play for. The Hill Climb could very well be decisive in seeing who takes John Chapman’s crown?

Finally good to see young Stuart McPhail has taken the plunge and joined the club. We look forward to his continued presence and seeing those times fall over his first few seasons.

Next Tuesday we’re off to the P459 for more Club 10 action, see you all there!

CC Weymouth Club Hilly 18 P451/18 31/07/12

Steve Pink writes.....I don't know whether everyone is glued to the box, watching the Olympics, they have all taken the kids on holiday or just can't face the challenge of this course but only 8 determined riders turned up to test themselves on possibly the toughest course in Dorset.

With course record holder Paddy Dunn still training himself back to fitness after injury it was left to Greg Parker and Ian Gillam to battle it out for the evenings bragging rights. Greg edged out his younger rival to take the win in 44:41, Ian's second place was none to shabby though with a 44:55 and Steve Pink taking best of the rest with 47:48. All three riders shaving minutes off of their respective previous best times despite the cool and breezy conditions.

It was a pleasure to see Dave Wood again. He is clearly making the most of his break 'down south' and we look forward to his next visit.

A mention also though for David Butt who had a rather scary moment coming down Revel's Hill (where we regularly hit speeds in excess of 50 mph) David found his odometer sensor had worked its way loose and was rattling the spokes, David managed to rip it off without doing a 'Christian Sorenson' and avoided either getting his fingers caught or having a what could have been a very nasty spill (David if you want to sound like a motorbike just stick to the old lollypops in future!)

Next week is the second of our 10 mile 2-UP races on the P451. Hopefully regular top pairing Gary Dighton and Terry Icke will be there to set the mark as usual!

Steve Pink writes.....

'Time' to enjoy!

OK I know a lot of riders are reluctant to take there turn at timekeeping and I am no different.
I love racing, absolutely love racing and nothing beats the buzz you get from racing but every
now and then you have to put your Neanderthal urges to one side and take your turn to keep our
sport ticking over. Having said this though I have to admit to actually enjoying being the
timekeeper for the evening. Apart from the small lull between setting the last rider off, and
clocking the first one home, you are constantly busy and you get a kind of buzz just from the
anticipation of what times your friends and club mates might do? (after all you will know
immediately). The other plus side is that you can go home, eat your dinner in a normal civilised
fashion for once and get a normal nights sleep. So I encourage all of us to not be afraid of
giving it a go when required, you might find out you actually enjoy it!

Back to the evenings racing. A good turn out due to the glorious weather (well we've been waiting long enough) and a warm welcome to visiting Natalie White, Gavin Barron, regular visitor Dave
Wood and first timer Stuart McPhail. I think the bug may have bit with Stuart and hopefully we
will see him return soon (if you're reading this Stuart your time was very close to my first ever TT).

Ian Gillam proved to have better legs than his clock watching skills as he overcame a late start
to take the win and maximum club points with another impressive time (22:12). Greg Parker backed
up his recent good results with 22:39 for second and David Butt made sure the top three were the
same as last week with 24:19. All three were course bests I believe?

One final word for our club treasurer, Andrew Stevenson, who turned up to do his first time trial in over two years, he managed just 1.5 miles before puncturing and having to call it a day. I can only imagine just how frustrated he must have been feeling. Andrew you will just have to turn up more often!

It's the Hilly 18 next Tuesday, we don't get many visitors from PW or BJW to this course but they don't know what they are missing out on. This is possibly the most rewarding course you could ever race (if also one of the toughest). We dare you to try it just once, a bit like timekeeping you might find you enjoy it!

CC Weymouth Club 25 10/07/12 p451/25

What no rain?

After two week of no racing, due to this most appalling of British Summers, we finally got some time trialling in last night!Steve Pink writes.... The club 25 has never attracted large numbers, partly because of the distance and partly down to how tough this 25 course is, and some may have stayed away due to the heavy showers during the day or some may just be on holiday. However 7 riders clearly had an itch to scratch and lined up at the start for a hard evenings ride, the cool temperatures and a stiff westerly breeze made sure of that!

Gary Dighton once again came across from Poole Wheelers as, in his own words, "this year you never know if you're going to get a ride in" due to the wettest summer many can remember. Gary put in another storming ride to take the win in 56:01, Greg Parker once again backed up the excellent form he has found with 57:45 and a first race in two seasons for former member Ian Gillam showed the hard work he has been putting in whilst away at university as he flew round in 58:21 Ian has also earned himself quite a tasty little job working in the F1 industry which he will be starting shortly, clearly he has been hitting the books as hard as he has hit the tarmac. Well done to Ian, it is always good to see that the rewards are there if you are willing to put the effort in!

All being well hopefully we will return to the P451 for some club 10 action next Tuesday evening,

See you all there?

CC Weymouth Club 10 12/06/12 P451/25

Steve Pink writes.......
Paddy ‘The Daddy’ Dunn showed us all how to do it again! Having already taken the club record on the P451/10 and the course record on the P451/18 hilly, Paddy completed the hat-trick last night by taking the course record on the P451/25 with a stunning time of 55:37. This is some achievement given that the P451/25 is known as a slow 25 course, and whilst conditions were good it was by no means a ‘float’ day.

Bringing up the best of the rest, Greg Parker is really starting to find the form we all knew he was capable of with a very impressive 57:07 and Charlie Lawson rounded out the top three with a solid 59:09, both I believe are personal bests?

Also deserving of a worthy mention are Club Chairman Stuart Carrington for taking another minute + off of his PB and Andrew Preston who returns to the TT scene after completing the Wessex Super Randonneur Series in recent weeks which, despite being a huge achievement in itself, was also part of his preparations for a shot at a 24 hour TT this season. Best of luck to Andrew!

CC Weymouth Club Hilly 18 P451/18

Steve Pink writes....“Records are there to be broken” so the saying goes, and CC Weymouth’s own Paddy Dunn proved just that as he put in a stunning ride to take a huge 1:28 off of, World age group Duathalon champion, Ian Cardy’s previous best mark from 2010. Paddy has been having a stellar season and is continuing to find more speed every week. Having taken time out to start a family a couple of seasons ago Paddy rode sparingly last year. However after putting in the hard miles over the winter and coupled with a new TT bike, this season Paddy is starting to show again what he’s really all about!

The condition last night were almost perfect and quick times were seen all round with several PBs being posted. A great ride from Greg Parker, a MTB and road racing convert, who put in a cracking time despite still suffering from a mammoth ride on Sunday. New member Matthew Pye is also starting to see the fruits of his training efforts as his times start to tumble and the ever smiling David Butt going under the 50 minute mark for the first time.

Two riders who were not quite so lucky were Charlie Lawson and Myself. At least Charlie made it three quarters of the way round before he punctured, I never even got to the start line. The frustration of missing out on such a quick night was clear to see on both our faces, however I found my way to the finish line to keep our faithful time keeper, Justin, company and roar on the guys through the last few yards!,

OK so someone has clearly forgot that it is supposed to be the end of spring, not the middle of winter? With temperatures barely touching double figures there was plenty of winter clothing to be seen, baby oil being applied to the legs and a the smell of deep heat in the air as riders attempted to get their muscles warmed up for the evenings ride.

Few riders managed anything near their best thanks to the cold, damp and windy conditions but Poole Wheelers Gary Dighton “in search of extra speed” made the short ride over from Wareham to take a comfortable win in 22:16, a great time given the weather. In Gary’s own words the home stretch was “a bit of a grovel”. Bryce Riglar taking maximum club points in 2nd and Greg Parker being one of the few improvers for 3rd. Also a welcome return to action for former member Chris Jones, we hope to see more of you this year!

All that was left was for the lucky riders who had cycled over to the course to get drenched and frozen by the hail storm on the way home (there must be better ways of getting the miles in?).

Steve Pink reports on the club 10

The long awaited return of some sunshine brought out a healthy 20 man field to the Monkey World circuit.(p459) With the warming sun, a gentle southern breeze and dry roads hopes were high for some quick times.
Unfortunately the wind died completely and with no lift the whole 10 miles were a bit of a slog. Most people’s times were 30 to 60 seconds down on usual but everyone enjoyed not being wet for once!
There was one person though who didn’t have a great night, Matt Merritt caught some mud coming out of the tight Worgret turn and lost his front wheel. Matt has a damaged radius in his elbow and some healthy road rash that will keep him off of the bike for a few weeks. He is gutted to be missing the start of the Moreton TLI series which he loves so much, but we are all glad that it wasn’t worse.
Matt would like to pass on his thanks to all who helped on the evening including the two ladies living opposite, the car drivers who stopped, the Mud Sweet and Gears riders coming the other way, Mr and Mrs Gould who drove down to find him and the following racers who gave up there times to stop and help (especially the Chairman who gave up on a certain course best despite having a mechanical and only running one gear!), but most of all to Justin who took him to hospital to get checked out.

As for the results:

Julian Thacker, VC St Raphael, took the win in 23:15. Charlie Lawson, CCW, took maximum club points with a 23:50 and the rapidly finding his legs again Greg Parker, CCW, finished 3rd with 24:10

Total available £359 (last year £290)

The plan is to have a brief presentation at the end of the event. We hope you will stay whether or not you have won.

In addition, whilst this is a great prize list, we are aware that most riders have little or no chance of picking up one of
the main prizes. They may not ride for prizes, but they all ride to the best of their ability and we have thought long and
hard about the best way to recognise that effort - without resorting to random "spot" prizes which only recognise
presence, not achievment. There is no easy answer to that problem and no solution will please everybody. We just
hope that what we have come up with will be seen as a reasonable solution in keeping with the fun ethos of the event.

So, if you do not win one of the main prizes above, you will be eligible for one, and only one, of the extra categories
below, as long as you finish in under 40 minutes and stay for the presentation :

2nd placed team - because Poole Wheelers look quite strong for first, but second will be close
and difficult to predict because any main prize makes you ineligible for this
1st lady - normally a main prize but not enough entrants
1st remaining junior - normally a main prize but not enough entrants
1st remaining vet (scratch) aged 60+
1st remaining vet (scratch) aged 40 - 59
1st remaining other DC rider - this event is not viable without riders from outside our district, thank you
1st remaining South DC rider
1st remaining rider without a line 1 time
1st remaining CC Weymouth rider - blatant favourtism
2nd remaining other DC rider
2nd remaining South DC rider
3rd remaining other DC rider
3rd remaining South DC rider
Each and every other remaining Line 1 improver
If anything is left, which is possible, the remaining prizes will be offered to any wives or husbands, boy or girlfriends, children
or other family members or friends that you have brought along to support you - they work hard to tolerate our sport so also
need some recognition.

Inter Club Time Trial Series

The local time trial season gets underway in Dorset this weekend with the Poole Wheelers/Wessex RC 27km event on Sunday 26th. Entry is on the line with the first rider off at 10:00. Held on the Gallows Hill-Moreton circuit, the race is the first of six in an inter club series, with all of the events held on sporting courses. Points will be allocated in the same way as the popular end of season hill climbs. Participating clubs are Poole Whs, Bournemouth Jubilee Whs, CC Weymouth and Wessex RC. Of course these events are not limited to just these clubs and all are welcome. The idea is to add a bit of interest to these testing, early season club events and hopefully increase entries. Paul Hughes of Poole Wheelers describes the courses:
Sun 26th Feb 10:00. Poole Whs 27 km Gallows Hill-Moreton Circuit P433. A rolling course that starts at Gallows Hill then goes via Clouds Hill, B3390, Moreton, Wool, Worgret and finally along the 7km drag up Puddletown Road to the finish at Gallows Hill.
Sun 4th Mar 10:00. Poole Whs 15 miles Purbeck Hilly Circuit. A rolling start and finish with Whiteways Hill in the middle. Start in Holme Lane near the Springfield Hotel then via West Holme, East Lulworth, climb Whiteways Hill, descend Steeple, Church Knowle, Corfe Castle, Wareham bypass to finish in West Lane near the Springfield Hotel.

Sat 10th Mar 15:00. Bournemouth Jubilee Whs 20 miles Furzehill Circuit P472A (2 laps). An undulating course that starts at Furzehill and goes via Pig Oak, Horton, Horton Inn and B3078 to finish at Furzehill.
Sun 11th Mar 09:00 Poole Whs 15 miles Wareham-Gallows Hill Circuit P414. This is the same testing circuit that was used for the 2011 Rudy Project. Start at Wareham Station then past Silent Woman pub to Lane End then via Gallows Hill, Wool and Wareham bypass to finish at Wareham Station.
Sat 24th Mar 10:00 CC Weymouth 22 miles Moreton-Gallows Hill Circuit P436 (2 laps). This is the same course (but different start) proposed by Poole Whs for the CTT National Circuit Championships in 2013. A sporting course with a 2 mile drag up Gallows Hill from Wool. Start at Moreton, then via East Burton, Wool, Gallows Hill, Clouds Hill and B3390 to finish at Moreton.
Sun 25th Mar 09:00 Poole Whs 28 miles Round the Harbour P461. This is the revised edition of the old classic open event that used to start at Sandbanks and finish on the ferry approach at Studland. Due to traffic lights in the town and at Sandford, the new course starts at the Creekmoor Park and Ride and goes via Bakers Arms, A35, Woodbury, past the Silent Woman pub, Wareham Bypass, Corfe Castle, B3351 past the Purbeck Golf Club and through Studland to finish on the ferry approach. Note that transport will be provided to take kit from the start across to the finish.

Local Cycling News

Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) had to settle for second place in round 6 of the Wessex Cyclo-Cross league. British number 2, Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles) made fast work of the grass track course at the Thruxton Motor racing circuit in Hampshire. Cotty, however, extended his lead in the series and with Crawforth unlikely to ride enough rounds, is the man to beat. Round 8 takes place this Sunday in Reading. Ryan Hodgkyns, Jordan Wade (Poole Wheelers) & Simon Meadwell (BJW) were also in action

Next year's weekly Track League Competition leading up to the Olympics will see an enormous boost in the profile of track cycling and, with it, an increased use of Bournemouth Cycling Centre's track. During 2011 an initial group of 8 volunteers came forward and were trained by British Cycling to be L2 Track Coaches. However more volunteers are needed.

Alan McRae of BCC says "The local cycling community has benefited already from the last intake of coaches and to continue this growth we urgently need additional resource to come forward now. This would give us time to kick start their training so they can be operational next summer. Participation in our sport relies on volunteers and I would urge all those who would like to give something back to step forward now."

To register an interest please contact info@bournemouth.cc by December 11th.

This weekend saw the first of CC Weymouth's reliability rides followed by
the club AGM and presentation. Steve Pink writes.... 25+ hardy souls turned up on a real "PeaSouper" of a morning for the 34 mile trek around West Dorset taking in a couple of our tougher climbs, dodging multiple potholes, muddy roads "don'tlick your lips, that might not be mud" and for most the first run for their trusty winter hacks. Numbers for the ride were slightly down on
expectations mainly due to the Southern wide pour visibility that even
closed Heathrow for the day. However for those who chose to ride everyone
came back happy and bursting with enthusiasm for their winter training
programs.

After the ride everyone headed for the local patisserie for a spot of
lunch, an eloquently short AGM and the annual prize giving. It is a measure
of the clubs character that the biggest applause was saved for Clubman of
the year Justin Oakley.(TOP PIC) Justin has been unable to ride this last year or so due to ill health, yet he has still turned up and been our time keeper more often than every other club member put together. Without him we wouldn't be
the club we are. The award is nothing more than he deserves and alongside
being given lifetime honorary membership of CC Weymouth the club hopes it
has shown it appreciation. Justin's health is now recovering and we look
forward to seeing him back racing on two wheels again soon! Along with the
awards winners there was also a host of medals for achieving club standards
and it seems that everyone has got faster this year, a sign of the
increased competition perhaps? Roll on 2012.

Local Cycling News

Poole wheelers brought the local time trial season to a close with the final round of the National Circuit Series. The competition has been run since 1995 in pretty much the same format and was seen as an antidote to dual-carriageway courses. Rudy Project have sponsored the series since 1999, the vets competition was changed to include "target time", an extra round was added in the early noughties making 8 and regional rounds came and went. Over this time entries have remained fairly stable but never spectacular, with riders scoring points in their "best 5 from 8 rides" the final round has often been a dead rubber. This year's overall winer, Matt Bottrill (I-ride.co.uk) had wrapped up the title with two rounds remaining. The same also for Michelle King (Team Jewson MI Racing) in the women's competition.

None of this however is any fault of the Poole Wheelers, who put on an excellent event, with warm autumn sunshine making it an enjoyable afternoonn's sport! In addition, £115 was raised for the Rob Jefferies velo youth fund. Fresh from riding the Tour of Britain, Dutchman Wouter Sybrandy (Sigma Sport-Specialzed) stormed to an emphatic win, clocking 1:05:46. Poole-Based Adam Topham (High Wycombe) was a distant second, 2:21 down. Topham was eligible for the 1 lap veteran race, which he would have won but opted to ride the 2 lap senior event. Veteran Terry Icke and Junior's Harrison Fielding & Ryan Weston won the team prize for the Poole Wheelers.

Talk at the HQ was of British Cycling license points being on offer to increase entries. That remains to be seen but next season's series kicks off in the East Midlands on March 25th.

The Inter-Club hill climb competition reaches its conclusion on Whiteways Hill this Sunday, with CC Weymouth favourites to win the Team Title.

Having won the trophy for the first time last year, the Weymouth club was not going to let it go without a fight. From the very first round at Portland they have been out in force, a tactic that has rewarded them with plenty of points.

Both the Poole Wheelers & the Bournemouth Jubilee have a bigger membership but both have failed to get riders on the start line. Indeed, the Jubilee had more riders watching at last weeks Kingston event than the Poole club had riding! (Myself included), this may well have cost them the title. The individual crown looks destined to go to Simon McLaughlin (BJW), who won the latest round on Kingston Hill.

It’s hard to see anyone beating McLaughlin; he is climbing well and won on Whiteways last year. The daunting Whiteways ascent starts off fairly flat, almost benign but two thirds of the way up, the hill bears its teeth as it dog-legs right toward the coast. The slope ramps up again to the left and with the chequered board in sight riders can see the end of their season. The finish line however, never seems to come and valuable time can be lost on the run-in. High above the lost village of Tyneham in the army ranges, the 2011 title will be decided!

Daniel Lloyd (Garmin-Cervelo) had a disappointing end to his season, breaking his collar bone in a crash in the Tour of Lombardy in Italy.
“We hit this fairly slow corner,I hit a hole in the road both my arms slipped off the bars and that was it” said the Queens Park based professional. Lloyd still does not have a contract for 2012, there is still a chance he may stay with Garmin-Cervelo but with the season over Lloyd is considering his options.

Kingston Hill Climb

Taking his third victory in a row, Simon McLaughlin (BJW) won the Kingston Hill Climb and looks set claim the individaul title in the inter-club competition. McLauhglin looked very smooth as he sped up the short, hairpin climb. In contrast, others struggled to find the right gear that would get them to the summit. The warm autumn sunshine made it enjoyable for those watching but a slight headwind, half way up did not help the riders. Although 9 secs outside the record for the hill, McLaughlin clocked 2:07.9 to finish a comfortable 7 seconds ahead of James Horton (unatt). Andrew Graham (BJW) took 3rd for the second week running with 2:15.

In the all important team competition, the Jubilee responded well to the challenge thrown down by CC Weymouth.

Packing the field with 16 of the 39 starters, the promoting club scored enough points to make the final showdown on Whiteways an exciting prospect. The Poole Wheelers also put up a fight despite most of their riders having ridden the Rudy Project TT the day before.

With open hill climb events struggling to attract 15 or more entrants, this local competition is proving to be a real success. Both the Portland and Creech events were well organised and well attended. The crowd of riders waiting to sign on outside the Scott Arms at the top of the hill was a pleasure to see.

The enthusiastic encouragement of the spectators added to the atmosphere and surely helped the riders through the pain!
