Poole Wheelers 25, Results

POOLE WHEELERS 25 2nd Sept 2012 on the P413
INCORPORATING THE CTT SOUTH DC 25 MILE CHAMPIONSHIP
Paul Hughes reports……..It was a favourable morning with no wind giving 16 riders improvement on their 25 time.
Good winning ride by Stephen Walkling of VC St Raphael (52:29) with Gary Dighton and Terry Icke of Poole Wheelers just 23 and 25 seconds behind respectively (52:52 and 52:54). Well done to the Poole Wheelers for getting the Team result with Gary Dighton, Terry Icke and Andy Buddle (2:39:46).
The new VTTA standards, which are not so generous to riders of a certain age, didnt stop Terry Icke of Poole Wheelers winning the Vet Standard with a plus of 19:17.
Sadly only two lady riders and one junior. Fastest lady was Lesley Walkling of VC St Raphael (57:28) with Lou Dutch of Poole Wheelers (58:31) just over a minute behind. A creditable ride by Luke Davies of VC St Raphael (58:02) gave him 19th out of the 44 finishers.
Many thanks to the timekeepers, pusher, marshalls and HQ helpers for their time without which this event couldnt happen.

and food. Please make use of these facilities however, should riders choose to change in the car park
please remember the area is public and you should be very discreet.
COMPETITORS
All competitors eligible to start Stage Two must change TT Numbers for Road Race Numbers after Stage
One.
Race Licences will be kept for the duration of the event
Competitors unable to continue after Stage One must inform Race HQ
Junior riders are subject to Gear Restriction as per British Cycling regulations. The limit is 7.93m at one
crank revolution. This ratio restriction is normally 52x14. Riders subject to these regulations must present
their bike for inspection before signing on.
All competitors must produce their valid BC racing licence at ‘sign on’.

ensure wheels are returned to their rightful owner. Poole Wheelers organisation team will not accept any
responsibility or be liable for loss of equipment.
FEED STATION
There will not be a designated feed station for Stage One. A designated feed station will be made available
for Stage Two and will be situated on the B3071 on Newtown Hill. The feed station will be clearly
marked.
RIDER PROTECTION
Protection for riders and the convoy will be provided by motorcyclists from the National Escort Group
and static marshals. Safety cover for riders is limited to when you are behind the lead car and in front of
the final vehicle in the convoy. This is normally the First Aid Vehicle. If you are dropped from the bunch
and behind the final vehicle in the convoy then you are no longer in the safety zone provided by the
marshals. You therefor cannot assume that vehicles will give way to you or that marshals will be in place
at junctions. You must obey the rules of the road and follow the race route exactly until you are directed
otherwise by a race official.
STAGE ONE: START 10:01HRS
COURSE
START : Opposite Layby in Holme Lane Wareham approximately 200 yards from Junction with Holme
Lane and West Lane/Grange Road.
FINISH : Army Tank Range Entrance situated on the B3070.
DIRECTIONS TO START: Turn left out of HQ to Roundabout. At Roundabout turn left onto A351 sign
posted Swanage. After about half a mile turn right into West Lane sign posted Kimmeridge. After 200
yards turn right into Holme Lane and the start is 200 yards on the left.
DESCRIPTION : The course can be described as flat with the odd one or two humps/lumps. Riders will
start in Holme Lane heading towards the B3070. Riders will first negotiate a Blind Hump Back bridge,
please keep left to avoid oncoming traffic. The course continues on along Holme Lane through wooded
areas where they will negotiate several bends and one set of crossroad’s. Riders will have right of way.
Just prior to the junction with Holme Lane and B3070 there is a sharp left bend on the crest of a small
hill. Please keep in left, the road is narrow. At the Junction Holme Lane/B3070 riders will turn left onto
the wide straight flat B3070 to the finish line about 1000 yard away.
AFTER FINISH: Riders should stop shortly after finish, wait until the road is clear, cross the road, turn
round and start to re trace the Time Trial course. At the junction with Holme Lane please ride straight on
to the Junction with the A352. Turn right signposted Wareham back to the HQ. You must not ride against
your fellow competitors in Holme Lane. Alternatively, riders can continue along the B3070 keeping left at
every junction back to the HQ. BE WARNED, this route is about 5 miles, Take about 30 minutes and you
will have to negotiate Whiteway’s Hill which is very very very steep. See Google Maps.
NOTES: Riders must make their own way to the start ensuring they get there on time. If any rider fails to
make their allocated start time they will be required to start at the back of the field with an appropriate
time penalty.
Riders are reminded that the Prologue must be ridden on a Road Bike. No TT Bikes. No Aero Bell/Shell
Helmets. No Aero Bars. No Aero Disc Wheels. Deep rim Aero wheels (Max depth 80mm e.g. Zipp 808)
and Tri Spokes will be allowed. If you want to wear Skin Suits, Shave your legs and wear shoe covers then
this also allowed.
IN THE INTERESTS OF YOU OWN SAFETY BRITISH CYCLING TIME TRIALS STRONGLY
REMIND YOU TO OBEY THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE ROAD TRAFFIC ACT. ANY
RIDER FAILING TO OBSERVE THE RULES OF THE ROAD COULD BE DISCIPLINED.
OBSERVERS WILL BE ON THE COURSE
HEADS UP – ACCIDENTS DOWN!!!!!!!
STAGE TWO ROAD RACE START 1330HRS
At 1330hrs competitors will roll out from the HQ to start Stage Two. The race will be neutralised until the
riders are guided into Holme Lane where the race will be on. Heading west, riders will head for the
Crossroads Junction with the B3070 and Holme Lane. Under escort and the safety of marshals the race
will cross this junction still heading west along Holme Lane towards Bindon Lane. The race is now on the
circuit known as The Lulworth Circuit. Passing East Stoke and into Bindon Lane the race will turn left
into a narrow road that links Bindon Lane and the B3071. Riders must take care on this stretch of narrow
road that is about one mile long. At the junction with the B3071 the race will turn left heading up the
B3071 where riders will start negotiating the one and only climb of the route known as Newtown Hill. This
climb can be described a long drag.
At the top of the hill RIDE WITH CAUTION because the route descends for about 400 yards before the
race turns left back onto the B3070. This is a fast descending section all the way down to East Lulworth.
Having passed the twisty section of East Lulworth the race will continue along the B3070 where the road
opens wide into the Tank Range area. Passing through this area the race continues until the junction with
Holme Lane/B3070 where the race turns left heading towards East Stoke. The race has now completed
one lap and this route will be navigated for another four and a half laps before the finish line on Newtown
Hill.
I hope you have a great day and may the best person win.

Whitewick shows his class! Steve Pink writes.....

Contre Le Montre’s Stephen Whitewick lived up to his top seeding and was the only rider to ‘go under’ on the notoriously quick P415 with a hugely impressive 19:36 to take the win.

The early morning sunshine provided some pleasant warmth and with little traffic the racing was safe. However one rider still had tales of the ‘speed wobbles’ down Old Wareham Road to tell once back at the clubhouse, where plenty of coffee and cake were consumed and a particularly jovial atmosphere could be found.

Whilst conditions were good the moderate south westerly wind tempered the times from what they might have been and it was by no means a ‘float day’. Although there was a smattering of PBs throughout the field some riders were no doubt cursing the breeze and what might have been.

Despite the wind Poole Wheelers former BBAR winner Gary Dighton edged himself ever closer to the magic mark with an excellent 20:12 taking 2nd place (an apt time from our only former Olympian in this special Olympic year!) and another Poole Wheeler Andy Buddle continued his impressive season with 20:33 for 3rd. Harrison Fielding (also of Poole Wheelers) took fastest junior with a new PB of 21:34; Bryce Riglar (CC Weymouth) 1st Espoir 21:31 (also a PB); David Pollard (IngearquickvitTrainsharp RT) 1st Vet 20:44; Louise Dutch (Poole Wheelers) 1st lady 23:02 and unsurprisingly the home club also took the team prize thanks to Gary, Andy and also Paul Jones.

Thanks must go out to all the volunteers who give up their own time and with out which we could not go racing. Everyone from the pusher off, with his mighty right bicep, to the marshals who help keep us safe and the numerous bakers keeping our energy levels up deserve our deepest gratitude.

And finally if anyone wants another crack at their own PB then cast an eye over the Poole Wheelers calendar as there are a couple of Sunday morning club events on the 415 coming up later in the year.

Dighton.Icke & Jones in 3-up Win

Poole wheelers trio, Terry Icke, Gary Dighton & new boy, Paul Jones won the AC3RG 3 UP TTT on the P883. It was a good result for the Poole Wheelers who dropped Icke on the run in. Icke had ridden the West London CA 30 finishing 11th in 1.06.33 and was obviously feeling the effects.

Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) won round 4 of the inter-club TT series clocking 35.06 on the rolling 15 mile circuit. Local Riders,Local Races

Harry Bulstrode (Contre la Montre) scored a weekend double on the Romsey-Brook course in Hampshire. Saturday’s solo 10 mile time trial was run off in calm conditions and Bulstrode set a new course record with 21.38. Sunday’s two-up team 10 was a different story however, as heavy rain made it a day for the hard men. Riding with team mate Andy Bryson, the pair clocked 21.57, drying out at the HQ Bulstrode said “It was quite frightening I could not see, I had a visor on and it kept steaming up because of the rain” Poole Wheelers pair, Gary Dighton & Terry Icke, had placed 4th & 5th respectively in the solo event but decided not to start the deluged two-up. The two events were promoted by former British Best all-rounder, Glenn Longland to mark the 40th anniversary of his first ever time trial.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers opened their 2012 club programme with the quirky "mountain bike 10". Competitors are encouraged to ride "Off Road" machines "On Road". Dave Pickering proved fastest in the windy conditions, clocking 29.57 just 2 seconds ahead of Cliff Rowe, Andy Graham took third place with 30.28
Round 2 of the local Inter-Club TT series was called off due to torrential rain with standing water covering parts of the course. The series continues this weekend with a double-header: Bournemouth Jubilee run the 20 mile event on the Furzehill circuit on Saturday at 15:00. While on Sunday the Poole Wheelers 15 mile event on the Wareham-Gallows Hill course, starts at 09:00

Bob Jollife (New Forest CC )writes.......NEW Forest Cycling Club triathlete Gary Lock got his time trial season underway with a new personal best 10 in the Antelope Racing Team event on the King’s Somborne to Romsey course on Saturday.Gary, who seems to thrive in tough conditions, clipped seven seconds off his “personal” reducing it to 23-42 on a warm and sunny afternoon which was only spoiled by the stiff westerly which blew away the hopes of many other competitors.
The time trial was the first of two 10s at the weekend promoted by former British Best All Rounder Glenn Longland to mark the 40th anniversary of his first-ever time trial. Stuart Peckham, who has been putting in some sterling work during New Forest CC’s Wednesday evening turbo training sessions, reaped the rewards with an impressive 25-35.Gary Plumb was next best of a six-man “Forest” squad with 26-50 followed by new member Robert Brinsdon (28-00), returnee Martin Balk (30-32) and Bob Jolliffe (31-23).Winner with a course record 21-38 was Harry Bulstrode riding for the new Contre La Montre team. Bulstrode who is hitting top form early also took top honours in Sunday’s two-up team time trial on the same course.Riding with team-mate Andy Bryson he clocked 21-57 in heavy rain which produced huge puddles on parts of the course.Bulstrode said:“I like this course. I thought yesterday it did have a bit more of a tailwind back; but I think it comes down to whether you feel comfortable.”Bob Jolliffe and New Forest CC president, 72-year-old Roger Bacon, finished the event in the lantern rouge position in a time of 33-34.

New Forest CC kicks off its full programme of club time trials on Sunday with a 10-miler on the testing Holmsley-Burley circuit on Sunday (March 11). Event headquarters are at Goatspen car park. The first rider will face the timekeeper at 9.31am.

Inter Club Time Trial Series

The local time trial season gets underway in Dorset this weekend with the Poole Wheelers/Wessex RC 27km event on Sunday 26th. Entry is on the line with the first rider off at 10:00. Held on the Gallows Hill-Moreton circuit, the race is the first of six in an inter club series, with all of the events held on sporting courses. Points will be allocated in the same way as the popular end of season hill climbs. Participating clubs are Poole Whs, Bournemouth Jubilee Whs, CC Weymouth and Wessex RC. Of course these events are not limited to just these clubs and all are welcome. The idea is to add a bit of interest to these testing, early season club events and hopefully increase entries. Paul Hughes of Poole Wheelers describes the courses:
Sun 26th Feb 10:00. Poole Whs 27 km Gallows Hill-Moreton Circuit P433. A rolling course that starts at Gallows Hill then goes via Clouds Hill, B3390, Moreton, Wool, Worgret and finally along the 7km drag up Puddletown Road to the finish at Gallows Hill.
Sun 4th Mar 10:00. Poole Whs 15 miles Purbeck Hilly Circuit. A rolling start and finish with Whiteways Hill in the middle. Start in Holme Lane near the Springfield Hotel then via West Holme, East Lulworth, climb Whiteways Hill, descend Steeple, Church Knowle, Corfe Castle, Wareham bypass to finish in West Lane near the Springfield Hotel.

Sat 10th Mar 15:00. Bournemouth Jubilee Whs 20 miles Furzehill Circuit P472A (2 laps). An undulating course that starts at Furzehill and goes via Pig Oak, Horton, Horton Inn and B3078 to finish at Furzehill.
Sun 11th Mar 09:00 Poole Whs 15 miles Wareham-Gallows Hill Circuit P414. This is the same testing circuit that was used for the 2011 Rudy Project. Start at Wareham Station then past Silent Woman pub to Lane End then via Gallows Hill, Wool and Wareham bypass to finish at Wareham Station.
Sat 24th Mar 10:00 CC Weymouth 22 miles Moreton-Gallows Hill Circuit P436 (2 laps). This is the same course (but different start) proposed by Poole Whs for the CTT National Circuit Championships in 2013. A sporting course with a 2 mile drag up Gallows Hill from Wool. Start at Moreton, then via East Burton, Wool, Gallows Hill, Clouds Hill and B3390 to finish at Moreton.
Sun 25th Mar 09:00 Poole Whs 28 miles Round the Harbour P461. This is the revised edition of the old classic open event that used to start at Sandbanks and finish on the ferry approach at Studland. Due to traffic lights in the town and at Sandford, the new course starts at the Creekmoor Park and Ride and goes via Bakers Arms, A35, Woodbury, past the Silent Woman pub, Wareham Bypass, Corfe Castle, B3351 past the Purbeck Golf Club and through Studland to finish on the ferry approach. Note that transport will be provided to take kit from the start across to the finish.

Poole Wheelers Christmas Cracker Cyclo-Cross

Mike Simpson (GS Henley) pulled off a surprise win in round 9 of the Wessex League Cyclo-cross. Simpson rode wheel to wheel with runaway series leader Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) who had to settle for an unfamiliar second place.

While not quite Deep & Crisp & Even, it was certainly cold in the Wareham Forest for this late addition to the league calendar. Race promoter, Dave Wade had designed a fast course on the cinder fire tracks and pine trails that snake through the woods. A fast, technical descent and stiff climb, that forced most to dismount and shoulder their bikes, ensured it was no “testers” course.

Cotty and Dan Lewis (RAF) quickly established a lead with Simpson never far behind. On the second lap the Henley rider swapped places with Lewis and the only question left to answer was “Cotty or Simpson”? The pair rode together; Cotty’s skill on the descents was quickly answered by Simpson’s power on the flat. They were still together at the finish but Cotty had no reply as Simpson came round him in the final 10 metres.
The 41 year old was understandably pleased “ That’s my first ever Cyclo-cross win, I only started last year, I come from the road, any technical stuff and I generally fall off and lose time but for once I didn’t.The first race this season at Swindon i was 5 minutes behind Mike (Cotty).I am steadily improving with the skills, a better set of wheels and more confidence, i mean even last week he beat by 3 1/2 half minutes because i was falling off every lap. This sort of course there are a lot of power sections so i could put a lot of work down. I have the power but not the skill, the flat stuff is quite easy. I nearly came a cropper twice, going too fast trying to follow Mike on the downhill, so i eased off a bit, I thought he had me but I just kept closing the gap, its brilliant. I have been riding the bike about 3 years, started racing on the road last year before that I was rower and a runner. I started riding Cyclo-Cross and i just love it. I am going to do the national vets at Ipswich; I was 26th last year so hopefully I will do better this time. I have been doing the Wessex league seniors to get some better competition; I think I have made the right decision.” I might do the Boxing Day race, i expect Mike will be out for blood now!
In the combined Vets/Junior/ ladies race junior Matt Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) came out on top. Hargroves was always near the front of the near 50 strong field and his technical ability was impressive to watch. Sarah Woods (Wight Mountain) won the ladies race after leading from the start, crossing the line Sarah shouted “Have I finished”. Sean Williams (Wight Mountain) finished 20 secs down on Hargroves to win the Veteran category.
