Swindon RC LVRC Road Race

Roland Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk), grabbed 2nd in the Swindon RC LVRC Road Race, despite sickness in the days before the race. Tilley had been suffering from an upset stomach in the week, that saw him lose over a kilo in weight. The undulating 46 mile course at Little Somerford produced an attacking race that eventually saw a group of three go clear, chasing a lone leader. Tilley bridged across and the four worked well to distance the bunch and reel in the leader. The small group of five stayed away to contest the finale on Callow Hill, Nick Abrahams proved the stronger, pulling out 3 bike lengths on Tilley. Simon Williams (Hillingdon RC) took third place.

Tilley is really mixing his racing up. He rode the Bournemouth track league last week and will be off road next week in the Southern XC Championships.

START: Neutralised from HQ to the start/finish line (approx 2 miles). Proceed on the B3049 towards Winchester for approx 3 miles. Turn left (M) onto unclassified road (Rack & Manger PH) and proceed for approx 2miles through Crawley Village (M) to junction with A272. Turn left (M) and proceed on A272 for approx 1.5 miles to junction with A30. Turn left (M) and proceed on A30 towards Stockbridge for approx 5 miles. Take 1st exit at roundabout (M) to continue on A30 to next roundabout where take 1st exit (M) back onto B3049. Continue for approx 1 mile to cross start/finish line to complete 1 lap

"Riding Up" Youth Dispensations!

Some youth riders in the South region have been riding up(competing in a higher license category) without dispensation. Competition administrator for British Cycling ,Southern region, Tim Knight would like to remind parents/coaches of the rules on “riding up”. Tim had this to say:
'If a rider cannot produce a valid Dispensation card at sign on (it’s an orange card very similar to the Racing Licence) they cannot ride up, regardless of if they rode up last week or if the Commisaire or Organiser knows that they have Dispensation but they’ve forgotten it. No Dispensation = no ride up, no exceptions. They’re not insured and in the event of an accident or incident, our cover would be void.'

YOUTH DISPENSATIONS
Would all Commissaires and Promoters please note that only those youths with dispensations, which must be presented with their current licence when they sign on, are entitled to ride as per BC Tech Regs: 6.2.7.3 & 6.2.7.4~ No Dispensation = no ride up, no exceptions as it invalidates the event insurance.

“60 minutes of constant attacking, no breakaways and a 3rd at Mountbatten, Portsmouth. Toby on tired legs from a 4th at Goodwood the previous evening and Will feeling the effects of a heavy training block leading up to the Nationals next week. Shaftesbury Cycle Revival

Welcome to the 2012 Shaftesbury ‘Cycle Revival’.
Now in our second year things are certainly hotting up. In addition to the two main races we are proud to announce that Whyte Bikes are sponsoring a third event the ‘Whyte-Bread Trophy’ this is open to all riders who enter both the ‘Shooter’ and the ‘Bread Winner’ and the combination of the two quickest times by the same competitor is the ‘Whyte-Bread Trophy’ winner – we even have a big shiny trophy for the winner to keep. UK Bike Park are kindly supplying the electronic timing for the event this year, and with the timings for the ‘Bread Winner’ being so tight last year this will only add to the excitement on the day. Can the weather be as bad again? Well, that’s the one thing that is out of our hands, but come rain or shine, you can be guaranteed another fine day of eclectic bike racing from the Shaftesbury ‘Cycle Revival’ in 2012. Both the ‘Bread Winner’ and the ‘Shooter’ are exceptionally spectator friendly races. They are safe, challenging and are incredibly exciting to watch. The crowds in 2011 defied the horrendous June weather to come out in force and cheer on the riders in both events.

The Gold Hill ‘Bread Winner’ The ‘Bread Winner’ is a individual hill climb sprint over the steep cobbles of he world famous Gold Hill; a location that is firmly etched into our hearts and national psyche thanks to Ridley Scott’s iconic Hovis TV advert from the ‘70s.’ There is simply no other location like it The race for 2012 will incorporate age categories from 11 to 50 years plus, and is open to road, fixie, mountain bikes and ... delivery bikes... Competitors have a single electronically timed run over the cobbles. The 13 quickest riders qualify for the ‘Baker’s Dozen’ and a chance to improve on their first run.


The ‘Shaftesbury Shooter’ is a unique, no-holds-barred, short course urban downhill race, which in 2011 turned out to be far more exciting than planned due to the challenging weather on the day. In 2012 the course will be amended to make it a little shorter and sharper to slalom through the trees of the park. As with all well organised downhill races there will be plenty of time to practice on the course on the day. Each competitor will have 2 electronically timed runs. Age range for the Shooter’ is from 14 to 50 plus. The fastest single timed run of the day will be deemed the overall winner. Click for more details and how to enter.


The ‘Whyte-Bread Trophy’ The ‘Whyte-Bread Trophy’ is the combination of the fastest recorded times by a competitor who has entered both the ‘Shooter’ and the ‘Bread Winner’. • This is an open category (no age or gender limit) • Any combination of bikes from the race categories is acceptable (i.e. ride your dirt jump bike for the ‘Shooter’ then race the ‘Bread Winner’ on your racer, mountain bike, or single speed. The long awaited return of some sunshine brought out a healthy 20 man field to the Monkey World circuit.(p459) With the warming sun, a gentle southern breeze and dry roads hopes were high for some quick times.
Unfortunately the wind died completely and with no lift the whole 10 miles were a bit of a slog. Most people’s times were 30 to 60 seconds down on usual but everyone enjoyed not being wet for once!
There was one person though who didn’t have a great night, Matt Merritt caught some mud coming out of the tight Worgret turn and lost his front wheel. Matt has a damaged radius in his elbow and some healthy road rash that will keep him off of the bike for a few weeks. He is gutted to be missing the start of the Moreton TLI series which he loves so much, but we are all glad that it wasn’t worse.
Matt would like to pass on his thanks to all who helped on the evening including the two ladies living opposite, the car drivers who stopped, the Mud Sweet and Gears riders coming the other way, Mr and Mrs Gould who drove down to find him and the following racers who gave up there times to stop and help (especially the Chairman who gave up on a certain course best despite having a mechanical and only running one gear!), but most of all to Justin who took him to hospital to get checked out.

As for the results:

Julian Thacker, VC St Raphael, took the win in 23:15. Charlie Lawson, CCW, took maximum club points with a 23:50 and the rapidly finding his legs again Greg Parker, CCW, finished 3rd with 24:10

Saturday Morning Competition Coaching Sessions at Bournemouth Cycling Centre

Starting on the 12th of May, there will be a number of Saturday Morning Competition Coaching sessions at BCC during 2012.

These 2 hr sessions will specifically focus on developing Techniques & Tactics directly applicable to track racing at BCC. The aim will be to help develop riders already at competition level or competent track riders looking to start track racing. Therefore, the sessions will support both the Tuesday Night Track League at BCC and the BH championships being held later in the summer. This is in addition to local riders who race the National Hard Track Endurance League, and also want to compete at their respective National Track Championship (eg Youth/Junior/senior champs).

The sessions will provide opportunities for local clubs and teams to practice their team sprint and team pursuit riding, so please get in touch if this would interest you!

Riders attending should be competent at riding in bunches on the track, and riding Bournemouth or similarly banked tracks. Competent track riders can also work toward their BCC fast track accreditation by prior arrangement.

The sessions will cost £10 per rider per session. If riders need to hire a BCC track bike (£7) either turn up well in advance of the session (08:20am), or book in advance by phoning 07951 776350:

Bournemouth Arrow/Raymond Brown Track League 1

The first round of the Raymond Brown track league was hailed a success, bright evening sunshine and fast aggressive racing christened the track. A programme of youth racing, scratch, points and elimination races kept coming till the sun went down. Poole Wheelers junior, Harrison Fielding has plenty of speed in his legs, a winter on the Calshot track has seen to that. Fielding was always at the head of affairs, looking to make the race, the impetuosity of youth getting the better of the tactician perhaps. “It hurts but it’s meant to” said the youngster.

He did not have it all his own way however, Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized), also a junior, looks effortlessly strong, either chasing down or going for a “long one”. Sixth overall in the recent Junior Tour of the Mendips does not come without effort.

Jordan Wade (VC ST Raphael/Waite Contracts) is another youngster with the fight and determination required to win. The action was fast and thrilling! The small crowd of supporters and the” just curious” were certainly entertained. “Come along and watch for free” say the Bournemouth Cycling Centre.

The youngsters are the future but it is not all about them, experienced campaigner Roland Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk), raced on the old Winton Rec “D” shaped track. Twice a winner of the Southern area DIVS, Tilley, 48, spends his time racing mountain bikes but the track craft was evident and the fire still burns. “That Fielding was just a bit too fast for me tonight but its early days”

Despite the loss of the two dress rehearsal events to the rain, the officials soon found their feet and the operation will get slicker. The turnout was disappointing; no doubt the recent bad weather was a factor for those who had to travel. The locals, however, had no such excuse; the sun had been shining since early afternoon. Event promoter Alan McRae expects to double the numbers and momentum will undoubtedly build. McRae was happy with the first ever track meeting at the venue!

“It is all about speed. Tonight's racing was the fastest ever held in Bournemouth, it proved what a thrilling sport track cycling is and provided a shop window for local talent. These weekly meetings will really sharpen up riders so they ride and think quicker, and are therefore more competitive. It is an opportunity not to be missed”.

End to End in 72hrs! Relay Challenge

Mile-eating junior Konnor Bracher-Walsh and his Royal Marine uncle, Dug, will be attempting to ride the 960 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats in just 72 hours during July in a bid to raise loads of cash for the University of Cambridge Veterinary School Trust and Go Commando charities.
The pair will be riding in relay and say they believe this challenge has never been attempted before.
Konnor (16), who lives in Totton, Hampshire, said: "For a number of years I have been involved in fundraising for the University of Cambridge Veterinary School Trust as part of the Solent District Dog Display Team and Training Club, who have raised a staggering £145,000 for the charity since 1983."
The money has helped fund equipment and facilities at the school's referral hospital "which not only treats thousands of animal patients from all over the UK each year, but helps train the veterinary surgeons and specialists of the future".
"Although I am taking a break from the display team this year due to other commitments, namely my GCSEs, I wanted to continue fundraising for the trust and, as I have always had an ambition to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats, thought this was the perfect way to do it.
"I'm really pleased that my Uncle Dug is joining me in this challenge and raising money for his own charity, Go Commando, which supports Royal Marines and their families. A Royal Marine himself, Uncle Dug is making sure that we don't slack on the training.
