Fish & Chips and the Club 10!

The lighter evenings of spring signal the start of club events across the UK.
Surely the “chipper” of all “Fish & Chippers”, the club evening 10 is the staple diet of clubmen & testers from April to September. For lots of us it was our introduction to bike racing. More than a few of the current British stars cut their teeth in club events. The dilemma I always had was this: Do I count club 10 wins on my Palmares? Of course not! It’s not a proper race: it’s just training isn’t it? Look at any results however and there will be a sprinkling of “names”. 1st Cat Roadies, track riders, local fast men, and elite triathletes even Continental Professionals back home for some R&R. Its popularity is evident, whether looking for fitness, fine tuning form, perhaps an easy way to get your hard workout done or just keeping your hand in.

Every Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday the same scene is played out across the country. Car parks, Laybys, Industrial estates all are turned into makeshift headquarters. Some drive out to the event, cars full of disc wheels and aero helmets. Others rock up on road bikes, fully mudgaurded up, just to make it hard. Ride out and ride home, for those extra miles of course. It’s also a good excuse for that slow time. Some will warm up on Turbo’s, taking it all far too seriously, some chat away idly, not taking it seriously enough. “You are not using a heart rate monitor are you?” Skin suit or club jersey? “I am riding on specific power tonight”. Crowding around the result board the times tell the truth. The fast guys are not interested, after all it’s only training; they will look at the results later on the club website though you can be sure of that. Still the question remains can you count it as a win?
What about winning other clubs races? What about if you ride a PB? What about if you set a course record? Surely sometimes this non-race of a race must count? There was a time when I would never consider it. Club 10s on my all-time win list, never! I suppose it depends on your strike rate, prolific winners are not bothered, (how can they keep count) those that feed on scraps will take a win where they can get it. In the grand scheme of things I guess club 10 results are like any sports results, they mean nothing yet they mean everything. As for me, I am still not sure, if morale is good I don’t need those hollow victories but if morale is bad, a win is a win isn’t it?

Great New Bike Facilities at Avon Tyrrell

Bike facilities get EVEN better at Avon Tyrrell thanks to fresh funding.

The leading youth work charity UK Youth has further enhanced the off-road cycling facilities for young people and the local community at its Avon Tyrrell Activity Centre in the New Forest. £8,000 raised at last summers’ annual ‘Big Bike Bash’ and a recent £2,000 grant from the New Forest National Park Authority have been used to make the improvements.

The money has been invested in improving existing sections of bike trails and new ‘north-shore’ decking at the 65 acre site near Bransgore as well as a fleet of new bikes and training for instructors who cater to growing demand for biking skills sessions. The work has just been completed and further support from the bike industry and the CTC (National Cyclists’ Organisation) has ensured great deals to make the money go as far as possible.

Louis Bonney, UK Youth’s Director of Fundraising said “ It’s great to have a place where people of all ages can come and have fun and learn new bike skills in a fantastic environment. We are really grateful to all those that support UK Youth’s work with young people and the local community who make events like the Big Bike Bash such a success! We hope to continue investing in cycling opportunities for all in the coming years.”

To keep the fundraising for cycling momentum, this year’s Big Bike Bash www.bigbikebash.co.uk (link on right) event takes place on the weekend of August 18th/19th. A celebration of all things mountain-biking, music and real ale Avon Tyrrell is the ideal setting for the event which is supported by a range of sponsors including local companies and organisations, the bike industry as well as an army of local cycling club volunteers.

Aimed at the keen mountain biker or the happy amateur, the event will have more riders, prizes, bands, and beer than ever before. The cross-country racecourse is 5 km of twisty single-track that includes water crossings and north-shore and there are unique competitions like pint-to-pint racing, malt loaf eating and the famous lake jump.

The weekend is perfect for the whole family, with live music, DJs, a beer festival and plenty of activities to keep non-bikers and children entertained.

Ticket prices for this year’s event, with overnight camping available, are £40 per adult and £20 for under 18’s for those who want to take part in any of the competitions and for those that simply want to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the music and beer festival, tickets are £10. Under 12’s tickets with an adult cost just 1p.

South DC Seek Treasurer!

Good at sums? Your sport needs you
Health concerns have led to Fareham Wheeler Ken Blowe giving notice he will be stepping down as treasurer of the South District Council of Cycling Time Trials in the autumn.
Consequently, South DC committee members are looking for a replacement.
Ken says he has everything set up on his computer and it will be no trouble to pass his package onto his successor.
The job entails ensuring clubs have paid their subscriptions each year, making sure race levies are received correctly and sent off to the national officers, and keeping a simple balance sheet.
In addition to finding a replacement for the long-serving Ken, extra South DC committee members are required, as are people to promote additional time trials to fill an increasing number of gaps in the annual time trial calendar

Bob Jolliffe (NFCC) Reports......TEAM HONOURS went to the new Southampton-based Contre La Montre squad in Farnborough and Camberley CC's 25-mile time trial at Bentley on Saturday (APRIL 14).Clocking a rapid 50min 58sec ride, the team’s Ironman tri champ James Gilfillan took second place 18 seconds behind London Dynamo’s Richard Simmonds .Steve Whitewick took third with 52-05 and former British Best All-Rounder Julian Jenkinson was eighth with 54-30 to complete Contre La Montre's three-man team.Bramshaw’s multi-national champ Julia Shaw (Drag2Zero) was a further seven seconds in arrears and claimed the fastest women’s award. At Ringwood, New Forest Cycling Club powerhouse Gary Lock took top honours in his club’s first evening 10-miler of the season finishing in 23-04 to beat GA Cycles’ visitor Simon Barnes into second place by 29 seconds.Returning from injury, the home club’s Ben Boardman showed a good improvement with 23-35 for third while fourth place went to Sotonia CC’s Gawain Young with 23-39, just one second faster than New Forest’s Colin Humm.Forest clubmate Tony Rendall followed up a cracking Good Friday ride at Upton with 24-50 for sixth, a single second faster than Stuart Peckham, who was four seconds quicker than Southampton Tri Club’s Mike Zollo in eighth.Conditions were chilly on the Sopley road but that did not stop a total of 31 riders competing.Others (NFCC unless stated): Phil Roker (Full-on Tri) 25-13, Stuart Ward 25-21, Rob Brinsden 26-06, Rob Ellis (VC St Raphael) 26-14, Chris Grant 26-24, Gary Plumb 26-30,

Stephenson in Good Form at Tour of Mendips

Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized) was pleased with his 6th place at the Tour of the Mendips and was in the thick of the action. The Ringwood –based junior had a slow early season but is coming into form nicely.
“ The race was really tough and don't go the way I'd planned. My legs didn't feel great on the first day and I had to do a lot of work trying to bridge gaps and pull back breaks because I panicked too much when a group of 10 or so got a minute and a half lead. By the end of the stage I was completely knackered. At the start of stage 2 my legs were still feeling stiff. I managed to keep up and push on with the leaders on the hills though which eventually got me in a 6 man break with about 30km to go. Legs were pretty shot after a day of hard efforts so couldn't give much more on the final climb but managed to stick close to the others and not lose too much time. Jon Dibben, Dan Pearson and Alex Peters were all going strong. I was pleased to get 6th on GC @38s especially as my legs weren't going as well as they have been. Also an improvement on my 7th in the last junior national series race. A good weekends racing, bring on the next race!” Will later posted on Facebook “After getting up for races so early over the past tweo days , waking up for school seems like a lie in”
Next up for Stephenson is the Sandie Radford Memorial Road Race this weekend. He will also be riding the Raymond Brown Track league at the new Bournemouth Velodrome. The first point scoring event is on May 1st, the Bournemouth Cycling Centre is holding two “dress rehearsals” ahead of that, with the first one on Tuesday 17th at 18.00

Junior Tour of the Mendips Stage 2, Will Stephenson 6th on GC

Dave Wade sends this report on Stage 2, Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized) takes an impressive 6th place overall. (all results provisional)........

A hard race today, all the riders should be congratulated on their efforts, the climbs were brutal and to just finish was an accomplishment

"A sunny but chilly morning greeted the riders as they prepared for stage two Junior Tour of the Mendips. All the talk this morning was about the steep climbs that awaited the riders. So, 1000hrs the riders prepared for the start, 9 riders with a 23 second lead over the Peleton but this not a big time gap considering the hills they have to ride up.In respect of the South BC Riders positions at the start of Stage two, Joe Kirkham Hargroves 7th and leaders group, Sam Lowe Hargroves 12th @ 11 secs, Andy Shackell VC St Raphael 17th, Jon Dibben Hargroves 19th, Andy Hargroves 21st, Jordan Wade VC St Raphael 36th, Will Stevenson Primera 44th all at 23 secs back.On hill climb one, 4 riders had a 1.45 sec lead over the Peleton, all South BC riders safely in the Peleton apart from Andy Shackell who suffered a puncture at the foot of climb one and was never able to get back on in such difficult circumstances. The climb was proving difficult as now about 6 riders off the back finding the climb tough but the steeper climbs are yet to come. Riders in front were James Newey (Cadence sport) Ashley Proctor Sports (Cover Altura) and Adam Lewis (Wolverhampton Wheelers.)Now on top of the Mendips where the roads were fairly flat but undulating, the riders who had the lead after the first climb were still away but their lead from the peloton was coming down and was now at about one minute. The riders now will be negotiating some downhill stretches before coming up against climb two.As the riders negotiated climb Two the difficulty of the accent became clear as the field was very spread out, first over the climb was Jo Moses (Sportscover Altura RT) together with Jon Dibben (Hargroves) & William Macke (AW Cycles) with the field getting over in two and three’s but well spread out. At this stage Will Stevenson was showing his climbing ability and was well placed near the front and looking strong however Jordan Wade was about 4 minutes back and apparently had a mechanical problem and the foot of the second climb. Away the riders went across the Mendips once more attempting to get together to form a Peloton but this was proving difficult. So with the riders now negotiating climb three it was Jon Dibben (Hargroves) who was now in the lead on his own with about a 50 second lead over two or three riders and then a further bunch was another 1.10 seconds adrift. With the riders now well spread out spectators gathered at the finish at the top of climb four fully expecting to see Jon Dibben emerge over the top in first place but this was not to be as first up were two riders driving for the finish Alex Peters (Mosquito Bikes) & Tao Geohegan-Hart (Cycle Club Hackney) with Peters just nicking the win. Next over was a tussle between Jon Dibben (Hargroves) and Dan pearson (Willier/Live Ride2) with Dibben Grabbing third spot. Will Stevenson had a great ride and finished close behind in 6th place. Jordan Wade (VC St Raphael) completed the race and finished in 43rd place with Andy Shackell (VC St Raphael) at the back of the field having never recovered from getting a puncture at the foot of the first climb".

East Dorset CA 27KM

Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) picked up his second win in as many weeks in the EDCA 27KM event on the Gallows Hill circuit. Dighton clocked 36.31 for a 29 second winning margin over team mate Terry Icke. Dave Pickering (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers), with 37.26, took third spot in a small, mostly local field. Devon visitor, Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) would have challenged Dighton but a broken front changer after just 3 miles ruined Alliban’s morning. A stiff north- easterly breeze was only in the rider’s faces for the last few miles, Dighton “felt good” and said it was “fast”. The rolling P433 course is known locally as “The Lawrence of Arabia circuit”. It passes Clouds Hill, T E Lawrence’s cottage, then through the village of Moreton, his final resting place.

Junior Tour of the Mendips

Two local riders, Will Stephenson(Primera/Specialized) & Jordan Wade (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) are riding the Junior Tour of the Mendips. Both Wade and Stephenson haver shown good form ahead this National Junior series race.

"A dull chilly damp morning awaited two local riders, Will Stevenson (Primera/Specialized) and Jordan Wade ( VC St Raphael) at this year’s Junior Tour of the Mendips Race One. At 1000hrs, after a very brief briefing, the 80 Junior riders rolled out onto the Chew Stoke Lake course, flat in most places, several rolling up and downs and one hill of any significance, to do battle with each other. Quite a talented field set off that included Jonathon Dibben, a well-known British Cycling Squad member and a strong Hargroves Cycles Team.

After Lap One a brave rider in a bold move passed the start/finish line with a 45 second lead but by Lap two this rider was joined by another 8 riders meaning a group of nine had a healthy 1. 45sec lead. It was then that Jon Dibben recognised the danger of this group pulling away so he and another rider pulled away from the Peloton to try and make the gap which they managed at the end of Lap 3. At the beginning of Lap 4 Will Stevenson also must have sensed danger and he too accelerated away from the main group in an effort to close the gap on the leading group now totalling 11. At the end of Lap 4 onto Lap 5 Will Stevenson was back in the main group but somehow the Peloton had managed to reduce a 1.40sec gap to just 18 seconds, the reason for this we found out later was that the front 11 had crashed due to several riders coming together, take nothing away from Will though, he worked very hard to close the gap on the leading bunch. While all this was going on Jordan was safely tucked away in the main Peloton hanging in there.

By Lap 6, the lead group had just barely 15 secs up on the field and included Jon Dibben that we thought would pull away but coming to the end of Lap 6 onto lap seven the Peleton was almost one. Then approaching the Bell Lap the race changed, a group of 4 were away with a 15 sec lead over a second group of five with the Peloton a further 10 secs back. Now there was only 20 mins to the finish and reports came over the radio that 5 miles out the group of 5 and 4 had joined and were about 20 secs ahead of the main group. Jon Dibben was not part of this group nor Will or Jordan. Coming into the finish straight the front group had a clear lead over the Peloton and it was this nine (sorry, don’t know who they were but one was Joe Kirkham from Hargroves) who contested the sprint finish. (Seb Bayliss Mid-Devon CC) A further 20 secs or so back the main Peloton sprinted to the line in mass, too difficult to say who where and when placed where but Will and Jordan were in the main group.

Well, that’s Stage One over, the sprinters have had their day but tomorrow the climbers will have their revenge tackling a really difficult mountainous stage race that includes four UCI classed climbs."

Wednesday Night Track Sessions

Wednesday night Track Cycling
Starting 18th April - 18.30pm


Run by the Bournemouth Arrow’s Coaching Team, these sessions at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre are open to all riders with some track experience and are pitched at the “Intermediate” rider level.
By that we mean all those riders who have achieved at least Accreditation Stage 2 in 2011, and are looking for a well structured fun session to further progress their skills and hone their fitness, but do not want the cut and thrust of full on Competition Training.
Those riders with Rider Accreditation from 2011 can revalidate for the new summer season when they arrive.
Sessions start time at 18.30 pm sharp so please arrive in sufficient time for signing on, hiring a bike etc etc.
Session fee is £8.00, cash only please.

Raymond Brown Track League

1 WEEK TO GO!

To get the most racing every night, we aim to match the standard of organisation demonstrated at Manchester during major Track Championships.

From 6.30 to 7.00 Youth Go Ride racing will be taking place on the grass track centre, giving others the opportunity to access the Tarmac D, get set up and warm up.

Senior and Youth Track racing starts at 7.00pm sharp after which access to the track centre will only be possible between races.

All riders and helpers must familiarise themselves with the Instructions whose aims are to keep everyone safe and maximise the amount of racing possible.
Instructions to Riders and Helpers

Pre race Administration

1. All Competitors must hold a valid or single day racing licence, Parental Consent Form if applicable and a 2012 Bournemouth Cycling Centre Competition Licence. Fast Track Accreditation for riders with 250 m track racing experience will be available, application for Fast Track can be made on a rider’s first night but please check your suitability first to avoid disappointment.
2. All Applications to join the League use the Entry Form 2012 and can be made in advance via track-league@bournemouth.cc (link on right)
3. All Competitors must Sign on and pay Race Entry (cash only) at the Admin Office prior to entering the Track Centre. Please be aware the only Toilets available are next to the Admin Office.
4. Competitors will be issued with a dedicated Race Number which must be returned after each night’s racing.
5. Any Competitor failing to sign on and pay the entry fee prior to racing any night will automatically forfeit their right to ride the League.
6. BCC Hire Bikes are not available for Competition

Track Centre Security and Safety

1. Competitors and Helpers must enter and leave the Track Centre only on instruction of the home straight Gate Marshall.
2. Competitors and their equipment shall be located in the Competitor’s Area on the Tarmac D. Please be aware there is no fixed “furniture” on the D so if support is needed to use turbo/rollers to warm up, riders need make their own arrangements. When setting up, please be aware that other Competitors need space too.
3. No warming up on the Track or Safety Zone is permitted prior to the start of racing.
4. Track competition starts at 7.00pm sharp, after which competitors and helpers can only cross the Track to enter/leave the track centre in between races and under the Instruction of the Gate Marshal.
5. Go Ride Youth Events take place from 6.30pm to 7.00pm on a grass track marked out in the central area. Throughout the whole Meeting, the whole of this grass area must be treated as out of bounds for any activity other than that associated with the Go Ride events.
Race Protocol

1. Prior to each race, competitors will be called to the Rider’s Pen where they will receive the Race Briefing for the event they are about to ride.
2. Riders will leave the Pen and make their way onto the Track only on the Instruction of the Commissaire.
3. Riders will normally line up on the fence and roll away from the back of the line on the instruction of the Chief Commissaire. The race will start on the Commissaire’s signal. In the event of a held start, riders must bring their own Holder-up who shall also have attended the Race Briefing.
4. Riders or helpers not attending the Race Briefing automatically forfeit their right to participate in that race.
5. Normally each event will consist of separate A and B races, the B race will be run first.
6. At the end of each Race, riders have one complete lap to decelerate, must then enter the safety zone in the back straight and directly into the Competitors Enclosure at walking speed or less.
7. Riders completing a second warm down lap risk disqualification.
8. In the event of a serious crash or major incident risking safety, racing will be neutralised by the sounding of an air horn by a Race Official. In this event, active riders must move down from the track and onto the safety zone as soon as possible. Racing will commence once the incident has been dealt with.

Stephenson Delivers Win for Primera/Specialized

Will Stephenson (Primera-Specialized) won his first E/I/2 race after a fine team performance at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth. The Easter Criterium was the first race this year to feature the whole four man Primera team and there was not a move they didn’t cover. Toby Neave escaped with the experienced Rowan Horner (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) the pair stayed away for half the race but were eventually brought back. The final break went with 15 laps remaining and all four Primera men made the selection. 5 laps to go and Neave and Stephenson attacked, with Jason Eastwood and Ian Legg left marking the break it was race over. Neave set Stephenson up and the seventeen year old delivered. Tim Elverson (Pedal Heaven) took second ahead of Neave, whose job was done. Stephenson had been in action the day before at the famous Herne Hill Good Friday track meeting and next week rides the junior Tour of the Mendips.

CC Weymouth 10

Jon Wynn (Northover Vets) won the CC Weymouth 10 but the promoting club were the real winners. The West Dorset outfit had put up a £199 prize to anyone beating Matt Illingworth’s course record of 20.17. Illingworth set his record on the P451 Owermoigne-Winfrith course, winning the national championships back in 1999. Wynn clocked 21.08 for a 10 second winning margin over Tom Alliban (Revo Racing).

Matt Burden (Severn RC) was a surprise 3rd. Most agreed it was a pretty good day, although the north westerly breeze made the return leg harder than the trip out. Wynn said “ Its the first time I have ridden this course, I think i need to ride it a few more times, I went too hard going out, and paid for it coming back. I want to have another go at the BBAR, it did not go to plan last year, I am diabetic, it’s difficult to control the sugar levels in a 12 but it’s getting better. I am also riding the Etape, I have actually done some structured training this winter.” Poole-based Adam Topham (High Wycombe) had got within 5 seconds of the course record in the previous weeks club event. Topham opted not to ride the open event, preferring his home clubs Good Friday 10, where he produced a winning 19.38. Topham made it a "weekend double" winning the Oxford City RC 10 on Easter Saturday in 19.39.
