Junior Tour of the Mendips

Two local riders, Will Stephenson(Primera/Specialized) & Jordan Wade (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) are riding the Junior Tour of the Mendips. Both Wade and Stephenson haver shown good form ahead this National Junior series race.

Dave Wade reports.....

"A dull chilly damp morning awaited two local riders, Will Stevenson (Primera/Specialized) and Jordan Wade ( VC St Raphael) at this year’s Junior Tour of the Mendips Race One. At 1000hrs, after a very brief briefing, the 80 Junior riders rolled out onto the Chew Stoke Lake course, flat in most places, several rolling up and downs and one hill of any significance, to do battle with each other. Quite a talented field set off that included Jonathon Dibben, a well-known British Cycling Squad member and a strong Hargroves Cycles Team.

After Lap One a brave rider in a bold move passed the start/finish line with a 45 second lead but by Lap two this rider was joined by another 8 riders meaning a group of nine had a healthy 1. 45sec lead. It was then that Jon Dibben recognised the danger of this group pulling away so he and another rider pulled away from the Peloton to try and make the gap which they managed at the end of Lap 3. At the beginning of Lap 4 Will Stevenson also must have sensed danger and he too accelerated away from the main group in an effort to close the gap on the leading group now totalling 11. At the end of Lap 4 onto Lap 5 Will Stevenson was back in the main group but somehow the Peloton had managed to reduce a 1.40sec gap to just 18 seconds, the reason for this we found out later was that the front 11 had crashed due to several riders coming together, take nothing away from Will though, he worked very hard to close the gap on the leading bunch. While all this was going on Jordan was safely tucked away in the main Peloton hanging in there.

By Lap 6, the lead group had just barely 15 secs up on the field and included Jon Dibben that we thought would pull away but coming to the end of Lap 6 onto lap seven the Peleton was almost one. Then approaching the Bell Lap the race changed, a group of 4 were away with a 15 sec lead over a second group of five with the Peloton a further 10 secs back. Now there was only 20 mins to the finish and reports came over the radio that 5 miles out the group of 5 and 4 had joined and were about 20 secs ahead of the main group. Jon Dibben was not part of this group nor Will or Jordan. Coming into the finish straight the front group had a clear lead over the Peloton and it was this nine (sorry, don’t know who they were but one was Joe Kirkham from Hargroves) who contested the sprint finish. (Seb Bayliss Mid-Devon CC) A further 20 secs or so back the main Peloton sprinted to the line in mass, too difficult to say who where and when placed where but Will and Jordan were in the main group.

Well, that’s Stage One over, the sprinters have had their day but tomorrow the climbers will have their revenge tackling a really difficult mountainous stage race that includes four UCI classed climbs."

Ludgershall Circuit Races 25/02/2012

While local testers were in action for the first time at the Poole Wheelers Inter club Time Trial roadies have already been at it for a few weeks. The MOD test circuit at Ludgershall, Wiltshire, has seen some exciting racing in the last few weeks, Dave & Jordan Wade (Poole Wheelers) have been regulars at the winter series, after a difficult start Jordan has shown a huge improvement and confidence is high.

Dave Gilham (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood)& daughter Ellie (VC ST Raphael/Waite’s Contracts) have also been out to Ludgershall. Ellie is quickly learning her road craft and managed to stay out of trouble in an incident packed race. Dave Gilham writes… Ellie Gilham(VC ST Raphael/Waite’s Contracts) rode the penultimate round of the Ludgershall winter series this morning in some very wet and slippery conditions. The women’s event was combined with the 4th cats and run simultaneously, about 30 riders in total. Ellie rode within the first 10 places for the entire race marking her main rival and club mate Adel Tyson-Bloor which proved a wise decision as around half distance a rider slipped on the far corner and brought down half the bunch, resulting in one serious injury. ( Lee Rayfield(Swindon RC) broke his collar bone) After the restart Ellie re-established herself near the front and finally took 2nd place in the women’s event.

Dave Wade writes…. yesterday Jordan went to Ludgershall and raced in the Cat 3. He had a good race, it was quite quick and he got himself in a good position to score points but on the last bend before the finish straight, there was a crash which upset the flow of the race. The race finished in two half’s with Jordan in the middle with 11th place. Immediately after this race Jordan went with the E/1/2 and I just expected him to go with the flow at the back and after a few laps come in but no, he was like a man possessed. He got himself settled and then became part of a group of five chasing down two breakaway riders (Felt & Colbourne). I know I am his Dad but I must say I was quite impressed especially as he had just finished a Cat 3 race. You can visibly see him getting stronger as the weeks go by. With two laps of this race to go the pack were all together and then the big guns came to the fore and sprinted in. Jordan came in with them about 12th I think which was a good effort.
Another local rider impressed me yesterday and that was Richard Horton ( BJW). He was in a breakaway of two in the cat 3 race and gave a great account of himself versus a chap called Nick Noble from VC Bristol. Noble has been winning all the Cat 3 Races this year but knew he was in for a race against Richard such so that Noble refused to go to the front to give Richard a break sitting on his tail for the last three laps. Unfortunately Richard was pipped on the line in a very fast exciting sprint. Richard also raced the E/1/2 but I’m not sure what happened with him towards the end.

There was a big crash in the Cat 4 race. One chap got carted off in an ambulance and several others hurt. A local rider in that race was Ellie Gilham who was always on the front or thereabouts but she did not get involved in the finish sprint. Don’t blame her, she is so tiny and the blokes in Cat 4 are like animals and very wayward on the finishing lap, its not for her to get crushed in that battle.

Anyway is was a lovely day yesterday, some great racing. Jordan has gone out again today, he is off to do the CTT Ride for the Pies 80 Miles. No stopping him now. He is gearing up for his first Road Race, The Tom Hawkins RR, promoted by Exeter Wheelers on 11th March.
Both Dave Wade & Dave Gilham raced at Ludgershall but no reports are availlable.
Matt Mildon (PCSC) won the youth event and rode the Poole Wh time trial the following morning.

Local Riders, Local Races

Photo,David Wade
Jordan Wade (Poole Wheelers) had to settle for second place in round 3 of the Ludgershall winter road race series. Wade lost out by a tyre’s width after leading the sprint out at the Wiltshire venue and comes after his 4th place the previous week. The seventeen year old has bounced back after a difficult start to the year. Racing on the purpose built circuit at Hillingdon in West London, Wade crashed in his first two outings of the season. His confidence was dented but he has stuck at it and the results are starting to come. Wareham-based Wade is a bit of an all-rounder, riding Cyclo-cross, mountain biking and time trials.

He started road racing as a first year junior last season (2011) and quickly got his third category licence. A regular at the Moreton series, Wade is quickly gaining experience and with that experience will come confidence. The legs are strong, just ask team mate Gary Dighton. The former Olympian trains with Jordan: " If Jordan is on your wheel, you just can't get rid of him". Every Tuesday morning Wade is up at 5am, 35 miles on the mountain bike in Wareham forest, you start to get an idea where the strenght comes from. It was so cold this week the water in his bidon froze! "Now thats keen bordering on madness" says Jordans father Dave. Dad goes on to say "He certainly has some talent there, it's just extracting it and like all lads his age, he takes no notice of his dad!!" Jordan Wade will enjoy this season on the bike. Along with Ludgershall,Thruxton and the Mountbatten circuit races he will ride the Junior tour of Bristol in April as well as the Etape du Tour. He may be distracted a little by maths, physics and geography A-Levels, a place at university to study engineering is the goal. After those two crashes it would have been easy for Wade to pack it in. He did'nt, he got back on his bike and got on with it, that resilience and determination is just as important as talent!

The Great Britain team was struck by illness at the World Cyclo-Cross Championships in Belgium last weekend. Luke Gray escaped the sickness bug but had enough problems, Rob Gray kept a diary:

Day 1 Wednesday 25th - Luke meets the GB Team in the evening at the Hotel in De Panne.

Day 2 Thursday 26th - First practise day. Luke, riding on file tread tyres slides out on some mud on a corner into the course barriers and injured the top of his leg. Later lots of ice helps to bring the swelling down.

Day 3 Friday 27th- Last practise day. two of the Juniors fall ill then more start to follow. Junior Hugo Robinson is moved into Luke's room.
My wife Jeanne, Luke's girl friend Lisa, and myself arrived on the supporters coach and stay in a hotel only 100 yards from the GB Team Hotel. We met up with the limping Luke that night.
Later that night Luke's woken to find, Hugo's fallen ill. Luke said poor Hugo woke him up 10 times in the night to be sick.
Day 4 Saturday 28th- First race day of the UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships at Koksijde in on the Belgium coast, half hour's drive from Dunkirk. Only 1 Junior Joe Moses makes the race, the other two were ill with what they think was food poisoning.
At 3pm the under 23 race starts without the sick Steve James. Luke struggles in the energy sapping deep sandy sections from the start in what is a power course not suited to him. We saw the pain on his face as he struggled with his leg in the many running sections.
GB U23 rider Kenta Gallagher finishes in 30th, he fell ill later that night. Jack Clarkson was pulled at 1 lap to go and finished in 40th and as far as we no remained well. Luke came in at 52nd and was pulled with 3 laps to go. Understandably wasn't pleased, but I did remind him that after all that 52nd in the UCI World Championship race doesn't sound too bad. He also said that the huge cheering crowds were quite deafening in places but was glad of all the many Brits that had made the trip to support him and the rest of the GB squad.

By now several of the GB Team Staff, coaches and mechanics had fallen ill.

Day 5 Sunday 29th- Race day two. The crowds swell to an amazing 62,000 today. GB's Gabby Day didn't start. Luke said she left the house for home, were Luke and she stays in the week with a bad chest infection. Also Annie Last was a non starter she two was out due to the sickness.
National Women's Champ Helen Wyman leads from the start but fades, but Brit Nicky Harris is the star of the GB Team who finishes a fantastic 6th.
Lunch time was spent in the huge aircraft hanger (read beer tent) for much needed beer, frites and waffles. This was packed with about 2000 fans with much flag waving, outrageous fancy dress, drunkenness, and singing along to loud music. The atmosphere was fantastic.
Race-2, the Elite race started at 3pm, without GB's Jody Crawforth who failed to make the trip due to an illness. Then after 2 laps GB's Paul Oldham pulls out of the race. Not sure why but he was really struggling. Ian Field the new National Champion was off the pace and finished in 36th place.

Day 6 Monday 30th- Luke drove back to Oudenaarde, he has a couple more weeks of racing to finish the season with a GVA race and a Superprestige race before he returns home on the 12th Feb.
We returned to GB via a shopping spree for some Belgium beer.
Robert.

Local Cycling News

Jordan Wade (Poole Wheelers) rode to his first victory in the latest round of the Wessex league Cyclo-cross. The Wareham-based, 17 year old triumphed in wet and muddy conditions at Didcot in Oxfordshire, winning the junior race with ease.
Wade will be in action this weekend and will start as favourite on his home ground. Round 9 of the Wessex league will be held in Wareham Forest and with father Dave, promoting the race, Jordan will have “inside knowledge” of the course.

Christmas Cracker Cross Start Times.

SENIORS 13:15

The senior race at Didcot was won by runaway series leader, Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale). New Forest based Cotty has won 4 rounds so far in the league and the title is his to lose.

New Forest CC have taken the decision to cancel their traditional Boxing Day 10 mile Time Trial. Only 13 entries had been recieved when the event closed and the club decided to cancel. Next years event is now in doubt. Last weekends Manchester & District TTA Christmas 10 attracted 49 solo entries, 28 fancy dress entries, 8 tandem & 2 tandem fancy dress entries. Winner was Steve Burke (Macclesfield Wh) 22.54

It’s a busy weekend for the Poole Wheelers. In addition to the Cyclo-Cross event at Wareham, the club have a track session at Calshot on Saturday. Then on Sunday morning they run their traditional “Mince Pie” 10 mile time trial. Run on the Gallows Hill course, entry is on the line with the first rider off at 10:00am.(Event Cancelled)

Poole Wheelers hosted the final round of this years 8 round series in October.

A Forest View

BEING a member of New Forest Cycling Club is not all about getting the miles in and powering along eyeballs out. There is also some serious eating to be done, too.More than 20, of mainly more senior members wearing cracker hats, tucked into some top fare at the annual Christmas lunch at the Old Farmhouse in Burley on what turned out to be a bit of a soggy Sunday afternoon.Ecologically it was sound meal: unwanted veggies were often passed to neighbouring plates to be devoured by hungry bikies trying hard to top up on their vitamins and banishing waste. However, with all those sprouts and parsnips, one has to question whether it did a lot of good to the ozone layer. As well as the traditional turkey and cranberry sauce, there were alternatives in the form of beef and trout; and I believe there was a vegetarian option, though once I caught sight of the word “turkey” on the menu, I looked no farther. For those with room to spare (or eyes bigger than their bellies,) after the starter and mains there was also traditional Christmas pud with brandy sauce among the sweets on offer. The vast majority of those there did their cycling in the morning then took the easy option and drove to Burley after taking the wet weather forecast into consideration. But there was a trio of toughies who opted to pedal: Ann and Pete Hawker who rode their tandem to Lyndhurst before climbing into the car and heading home to Winchester and club president Roger Bacon who forewent a tailwind home by giving away all his parsnips and sprouts. Thanks for organising the event, again, Roger. (Now we know why he has that beard.)Top turboBarry Wootten, who is going to go on a British Cycling course and become club coach, is already getting some members revved up for next season with his turbo training sessions at the clubroom in Tiptoe Church Hall on Wednesday evenings. Two have taken place already with seven members attending the first and six the second. The third session is due to take place tomorrow (December 14) with Chris Hughes in charge because Barry is busy.Idea is to take your own turbo, towel, mat and bike along . . . and be prepared to put in some hard work.Barry is not one of those coaches who stands on the sideline and shouts. He actually does the exercises as well. At the moment they are based on the pyramid system of building speed and they fit in well with his Saturday morning training rides which are being run off at between 15 and 16mph to build a broad base at the bottom of the pyramid to allow lots of layers to be built up.Cost is £3 a session to help pay for the hire of the hall. There is room for up to a dozen turbo trainers at a time, so contact Barry at barrywootten@gmail.com or club secretary Peter Weaver at verwooddesign@btinternet.com ( 01202 822001) to book a spot first. No decision has yet been made whether to stage turbo training on December 21 because of the close proximity to the Christmas festivities. There will definitely not be a session on December 28, but it will be “all systems go” from January 4.

Bill Suttie 1920-2011
Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers President, Peter Boston remembers Bill Suttie, who sadly passed away last week.

Bill Suttie, a long serving member of the Jubilee has died aged 91. My memory of him only goes back to 1972 when I moved down here. He was an inveterate long distance rider and completed no less then 24 24 hour races, many of them on a trike. He held club records of 418 miles in 1958 and 381 miles on a trike in 1964. Bill and Barbara lived in Kinson and two of their children, William and Jean were themselves fast riders with the club in their day. When Jean went to Italy to run a guest house in Tuscany Bill sold up and moved out there to be with Jean and her husband. However it was a brave move and the remoteness and hilly nature of Tuscany didn't help and eventually they came back to the UK in 2004 to live near their other son Alan in Fife, Scotland. I think they were happier there. I rode a lot with him with the Sunday "Scrumpy Wheelers" and in vets events. He was a great companion and friend and we shall miss him. The club's condolences go to his family Barbara, Jean,William and Alan.
Peter Boston.

Funeral to take place at Dundee Crematorium on Tuesday 20th December at 14:45
