New Forest CC Club 10 07/08/12
Bob Jolliffe reports……SHORTLY after Anna Meares kept GB’s Queen Vic off the Olympic sprint throne fellow Aussie Mark Fenner was ruling the roost at Ringwood in New Forest CC’s 10.The Nowra Velo rider, who claimed a win in Bournemouth Arrow CC’s 10 on the Sopley course on July 19 with a remarkable 20-35, ignored the strong south-westerly wind that slowed the rest of the field and stormed to victory in the Forest event on the Kingston loop in 21-30.With New Forest’s Gary Lock feeling tired and out for a ride instead of competing, Ben Boardman away and John Heffernan crashing to 25-22, GA Cycles’ Simon Barnes was his nearest challenger with 23-46.Second claim NFCC rider Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) took third with 24-10 while James Bannister was top home rider with 25-11 in fourth place.Another second claim member, Stuart Grace (GA Cycles) was fifth, followed by Forest competitors Chris Grant (25-21), Heffernan, Tony Rendell (25-29) and 16-year-old Hugo Walters (25-35).Others (NFCC unless stated): Rob Ellis (VC St Raphael) 26-01, Howard Doe 26-04, Tom Butler 26-17, Andrew Hanley 26-19, Anja Heijnen (VO2) 26-44, Richard Mason 26-51, Phil Underwood 26-54, Max Holloway 26-55, Julian Sheppard (Sotonia CC) 27-02, Konnor Bracher-Walsh 27-08, David Bourne (Come and Try It) 27-39, Nigel Finch (Mercia CC) 27-50, Phil Wilks (Come and Try It) 28-14, Peter Weaver 28-38, Richard Wills 29-11, Antony Moyle 29-47, Alex Brampton (Come and Try It) 30-28, Phil Jones 30-46, Roger Bacon 31-18, Bob Jolliffe 31-25.

New Forest CC 30 Rescheduled.

NEW Forest CC’s 30-mile time trial on the P164 at Lyndhurst, which was called off because of torrential rain last week, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, July 17. Although it will replace a 25, the alteration will allow the club’s Best All Rounder competition, of which the 30 is a part, to be completed. Racing secretary Roger Bacon said the regular P304 25-mile course will be used and he will add the extra distance at the start and finish. He urged potential competitors to note the change of start time from 7pm to 6.45pm. Event headquarters will still be the North Kingston triangle.

Bob Jolliffe with his Forest view........
WARM weather continues to bring a rash of rapid rides from New Forest Cycling Club members with Gary Lock getting close to his “personal” to win Tuesday’s club 10 and Ben Boardman smashing his PB by more than three minutes at Poole the following evening. If that wasn’t enough, New Forest CC won the newly-instituted inter-club competition with Sotonia CC by six points on Thursday evening, despite losing by four points on the night. And you can add to that a clutch of gold awards in the Bournemouth Sportive held the previous weekend. Clutch of PBs in 10 The north-westerly that had blown all day dropped away on Tuesday evening for the 10 on the Lyndhurst-Beaulieu Road course.Times were quick from the start with first man, 72-year-old Peter Hawker, clocking 28-31. Sotonia’s Ben Rickaby, off number seven, did 23-42 for eventual fifth place; Geoff Weller improved to 28-56 for a comeback best, No 26, youngster Remi Bennett, finished with a PB of 31-22 as did Patrick Walters who was happy to dip below 28 minutes for the first time with 27-47.Ben Boardman did a “best on course” of 23-12 for fourth place while, starting two minutes later, Gary Lock hit top form to produce 22-35, just 14 seconds away from his PB.John Heffernan, who has beaten Lock in the past three events, pulled out all the stops but could not match his speed, finishing with 22-59 for third overall. Riders Assaulted at NFCC Club 25!!!
Bob Jolliffe reports.......
NEW Forest Cycling Club tough guys John Heffernan and Gary Lock took first and second places in their club’s first evening 25-miler of the season at Lyndhurst. The event was overshadowed by the actions of an irresponsible young thug who caused bruising to 15-year-old Hugo Walters waiting on the start line at Matley. The youth hurled a “Coke” can from the passenger window of a passing car, hitting Hugo’s elbow and exploding in a sticky shower. Shocked and angered by the inexplicable attack, Hugo was allowed to swap starting order with fellow juvenile Konnor Bracher-Walsh to give him time to mop up and calm down. Further down the road, the thug compounded the offence when he leaned from the car and slapped first man off Dave Wilson as he was overtaken.Hugo, who despite the attack finished in fifth place with a time of 1-06-23, later described the youth as “an idiot”.Konnor, who finished his first 25, clocked a good 1-09-42 for 10th.Victory and three club championship points went to current club champ Heffernan who, just three days earlier, had lowered his personal best by 15 seconds to 56-13 in good weather conditions at Upton. And his form continued despite the cold north-westerly wind and wet conditions on the considerably tougher two-lap course taking in Beaulieu Road and Colbury on Tuesday where he clocked 59-54 against Lock’s nevertheless impressive 1-01-02 for two points.Stuart Ward, making a return from injury, took third place with 1-05-09 and collected the final championship point on offer.Stuart Peckham took fourth with 1-06-20, four seconds faster than Southampton Tri Club’s Peter Wooldridge who was sixth, one second behind young Walters.Others (NFCC unless stated): Marc Barfoot (Contre la Montre) 1-06-59, Steve Roberts 1-07-11, Andrew Hanley 1-08-55, Nick Williams 1-09-47, Dan Mitchell 1-10-21, James Bannister 1-11-19, Joe Phillips 1-12-01, Richard Rajski 1-12-09, Keith Bradfield 1-12-17, Richard Mason 1-13-05, Dave Wilson 1-13-17, Hugh Roper 1-14-32, Geoff Weller 1-18-36, Ryan Blake (Soton TC) 1-20-47, Poppy Holmes (Soton TC) 1-20-58, Stuart Martin (Sotonia) 1-21-59, Rosie Hillary (Soton TC) 1-22-34, Martin Balk 1-25-40, Sue O’Dowd (Soton TC) 1-28-48.
NEW Forest Cycling Club tough guys John Heffernan and Gary Lock took first and second places in their club’s first evening 25-miler of the season at Lyndhurst. Despite losing to Mike Simpson (GS Henley) in last weekend’s round of the Wessex League, Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) will win the overall title. Simpson put in a great performance in the Poole Wheelers event, upsetting the odds to beat Cotty.
The Wheelbase/Cannondale rider had the technical edge but could never quite shake off the tenacious Simpson. And when it came to the finale, Cotty had no answer to the pure power of Simpson.
This weekend’s Boxing Day Cross at Southampton sports centre will see them go head to head again. After that, Cotty will spend a few days racing in Belgium in preparation for the National Championships in Ipswich on January 8th. Already in Belgium is Luke Gray (Baboco), Gray, too will be in Ipswich defending his National U23 title. At the recent Gazet van Antwerpen, the course was so muddy; Gray said “it was like riding in melted chocolate, up to the hubs”!
Friends of Bournemouth Cycling Centre will hold a meeting to discuss the future use of the facilities. The Bournemouth Cycling Centre encourages all interested parties to attend and stress “This is not just about the Track but the future use of the whole area including the adjacent playing fields for activities such as Cyclocross plus the development of the facilities.” The meeting will take place at 19:30 on January 16th at the Collingwood Hotel in Bournemouth.
New Forest Cycling Club took the decision to cancel their traditional Boxing Day 10 mile Time Trial after receiving only thirteen entries. A regular fixture on the local calendar for many years, it would be shame if this event was lost. The New Forest CC will discuss whether to run the event next year at a committee meeting in January. One local Christmas event that has definately survived is the Bournemouth Arrow Boxing Day social. Over the years various public houses have been fortunate enough to host this traditional "toasting of the Season".The last few years "The Lamb Inn" at Holfleet,nr Winkton has had the priveledge. All are welcome and as the beer flows more races seem to have been won!
Parkstone based cycling clothing firm, Prendas Ciclismo, will continue to support the Horizon Fitness/Prendas Ciclismo team in 2012!
2011 has been an exciting building year for the staff and riders at the Horizon Fitness/Prendas Ciclismo
“It was always going to be very important for us to set a lot of foundations in place for the two important years that lie ahead” sats team manager Stefan Wyman. “2012 is the Olympic year and we are very pleased to have two potential Olympians in our team with Dani King and Joanna Rowsell. 2013 is then our target year to gain professional status with the UCI, and it’s with the riders that are on the team now that we hope to be entering the 2013 season.”
2011 also saw the team have a major return to UK competition with the introduction of a four round series in the Tour Series sponsored by Johnson Health Tech. These races are key to the continued growth of women’s cycling in the UK as they attract very important TV coverage. The team also held onto the title of Team Pursuit National Champions and retained the win at the Bedford 2 Day international stage race. We have managed to put together eight very talented riders for 2012 who have an average age of just 20.
They also get the benefit of knowledge from the team mentor, Helen Wyman, during the season. The team will be officially launched in the UK on 10 March 2012, and will then travel to the south of France for a two week training camp ahead of the UK season openers.

Spare a thought for Paul Hughes (Poole Wheelers). Paul came down after a touch of wheels at Calshot track last weekend. A badly broken leg has left him in traction over Christmas. Several people also came down on the ice last weekend, if in doubt, get the turbo out!!!

Jordan Wade (Poole Wheelers) rode to his first victory in the latest round of the Wessex league Cyclo-cross. The Wareham-based, 17 year old triumphed in wet and muddy conditions at Didcot in Oxfordshire, winning the junior race with ease.

The senior race at Didcot was won by runaway series leader, Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale). New Forest based Cotty has won 4 rounds so far in the league and the title is his to lose.
New Forest CC have taken the decision to cancel their traditional Boxing Day 10 mile Time Trial. Only 13 entries had been recieved when the event closed and the club decided to cancel. Next years event is now in doubt. Last weekends Manchester & District TTA Christmas 10 attracted 49 solo entries, 28 fancy dress entries, 8 tandem & 2 tandem fancy dress entries. Winner was Steve Burke (Macclesfield Wh) 22.54
It’s a busy weekend for the Poole Wheelers. In addition to the Cyclo-Cross event at Wareham, the club have a track session at Calshot on Saturday. BEING a member of New Forest Cycling Club is not all about getting the miles in and powering along eyeballs out. There is also some serious eating to be done, too.More than 20, of mainly more senior members wearing cracker hats, tucked into some top fare at the annual Christmas lunch at the Old Farmhouse in Burley on what turned out to be a bit of a soggy Sunday afternoon.Ecologically it was sound meal: unwanted veggies were often passed to neighbouring plates to be devoured by hungry bikies trying hard to top up on their vitamins and banishing waste. However, with all those sprouts and parsnips, one has to question whether it did a lot of good to the ozone layer. As well as the traditional turkey and cranberry sauce, there were alternatives in the form of beef and trout; and I believe there was a vegetarian option, though once I caught sight of the word “turkey” on the menu, I looked no farther. For those with room to spare (or eyes bigger than their bellies,) after the starter and mains there was also traditional Christmas pud with brandy sauce among the sweets on offer. The vast majority of those there did their cycling in the morning then took the easy option and drove to Burley after taking the wet weather forecast into consideration. But there was a trio of toughies who opted to pedal: Ann and Pete Hawker who rode their tandem to Lyndhurst before climbing into the car and heading home to Winchester and club president Roger Bacon who forewent a tailwind home by giving away all his parsnips and sprouts. Thanks for organising the event, again, Roger. (Now we know why he has that beard.)Top turboBarry Wootten, who is going to go on a British Cycling course and become club coach, is already getting some members revved up for next season with his turbo training sessions at the clubroom in Tiptoe Church Hall on Wednesday evenings. Two have taken place already with seven members attending the first and six the second. The third session is due to take place tomorrow (December 14) with Chris Hughes in charge because Barry is busy.Idea is to take your own turbo, towel, mat and bike along . . . and be prepared to put in some hard work.Barry is not one of those coaches who stands on the sideline and shouts. He actually does the exercises as well. At the moment they are based on the pyramid system of building speed and they fit in well with his Saturday morning training rides which are being run off at between 15 and 16mph to build a broad base at the bottom of the pyramid to allow lots of layers to be built up.Cost is £3 a session to help pay for the hire of the hall. There is room for up to a dozen turbo trainers at a time, so contact Barry at barrywootten@gmail.com or club secretary Peter Weaver at verwooddesign@btinternet.com ( 01202 822001) to book a spot first. No decision has yet been made whether to stage turbo training on December 21 because of the close proximity to the Christmas festivities. There will definitely not be a session on December 28, but it will be “all systems go” from January 4.
Bill Suttie 1920-2011
Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers President, Peter Boston remembers Bill Suttie, who sadly passed away last week.
Bill Suttie, a long serving member of the Jubilee has died aged 91. My memory of him only goes back to 1972 when I moved down here. He was an inveterate long distance rider and completed no less then 24 24 hour races, many of them on a trike. He held club records of 418 miles in 1958 and 381 miles on a trike in 1964. Bill and Barbara lived in Kinson and two of their children, William and Jean were themselves fast riders with the club in their day. When Jean went to Italy to run a guest house in Tuscany Bill sold up and moved out there to be with Jean and her husband. However it was a brave move and the remoteness and hilly nature of Tuscany didn't help and eventually they came back to the UK in 2004 to live near their other son Alan in Fife, Scotland. I think they were happier there. I rode a lot with him with the Sunday "Scrumpy Wheelers" and in vets events. He was a great companion and friend and we shall miss him. The club's condolences go to his family Barbara, Jean,William and Alan.
Peter Boston.
