Packing in the miles for a seven-day Alpine event has not affected the speed of New Forest Cycling Club’s Gary Lock.He powered around the second and final 10-mile event in the Thorney Hill series in 23min 31sec to take his second victory and win the competition outright with an aggregate time of 47-12.Second place on the night, and overall, went to Ben Boardman who clocked 23-59 to make a final tally of 48-55.“I was pleased,” Gary said after the finish at the summit of Braggers Wood Hill. “Ben’s coming into some form as well. New Forest CC 30 Rescheduled.

NEW Forest CC’s 30-mile time trial on the P164 at Lyndhurst, which was called off because of torrential rain last week, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, July 17. Although it will replace a 25, the alteration will allow the club’s Best All Rounder competition, of which the 30 is a part, to be completed. Racing secretary Roger Bacon said the regular P304 25-mile course will be used and he will add the extra distance at the start and finish. He urged potential competitors to note the change of start time from 7pm to 6.45pm. Event headquarters will still be the North Kingston triangle.

Sarah Storey: London Nocturne & Capernwray Road Race!

.."The second Saturday of June has, in the last two years anyway, been the traditional date for me to start the John O Groats to Lands End route alongside 600 or so participants sponsored by Deloitte. This year however I was doing an epic journey of a different kind and hoping that my powers of recovery would stand me in good stead for a double header of racing in two of the best UK women’s races of the year.

With Cheshire Classic [picture on left after our team helped me win there] being my all time favourite event close to home, I soon discovered that I also thoroughly loved the fast and frantic circuit of the London Nocturne at Smithfield Meat Markets and the lumpy course on heavy roads of the Capernwray circuit in Lancashire.

With the help of my lovely team mate, Gaby Shaw [pictured on the right], I headed over to the Capernwray circuit on the Tuesday before the race and we did four laps, checking everything from road surface to corners and also working out how to attack the changing gradient of the finishing climb. It was a recce well worth doing and one that fellow entrants to the race, Claire Rutherford and Nicola Butler did at the same time.

Working for Deloitte on the day before the Nocturne at their impressive hospitality venue on the edge of Olympic Park, Barney and I were already based out in the lanes of Essex and able to have a little spin on the Saturday morning. After a leisurely lunch we headed in to London to find our spot in the pits of the circuit and enjoyed catching some of the support races that were held in the run up to the elite races. We also met up with the team which was an impressive line up of Belinda Goss, Sarah Kent, Elle Hopkins, Rohan Battison, Hannah Manley and myself. The plan was to attack from the gun and try and get the fastest speed across the finish line, something I did manage to hold for a short time, before getting beaten by just 0.4km/h. The field was strung out in one long line for the first few laps before gaps started to appear and there was a smaller group of 15 or so riders off the front. Belinda got caught in a crash on one of the bottom corners, but after a lap or two out to straighten her bike, was straight back in and we were still losing riders from the front group as we started to lap the back markers.

For the numbers geeks [like me!] my power trace showed 33 spike of power over 800 watts with the highest being 1,129 watts! Many of the in between spikes were also between 500 and 800 watts too! It is little wonder we were lapping so fast! [yes I did have the box correctly calibrated!]

By the bell lap it was a case of hang in there and take as many places as possible as the speed lifted again, I ended up crossing the line in 10th place and couldn’t have been happier, it’s not often I get to ride a race with that sort of power requirement, I spend most of my time working on best average power for the long races, breakaways and medium distance time trials. Belinda had taken a well earned 3rd spot too.

A warm down and Pro Mr recovery shake from CNP Cycling started the recovery process and then it was straight into the car for the 250 mile drive to Lancaster. We had pre warned the hotel we would be arriving after 2am and so when we pulled up at 2.05am, we knew we’d had a good run.

I ate my breakfast in the car on the way to the HQ and then at 10am we were in the fastest neutralised section I think I have ever experienced at a bike race! The Capernwray course is just short of 10 miles long and with 5 and a half laps to do, six times up the Sunny Bank climb to the finish line, it was going to be a war of attrition to whittle the group down to a manageable size for the narrower lanes on the back end of the circuit.

Claire Galloway and I were straight to the front with Claire [pictured right] keeping the pace high on the hills so I could take over on the downhill sections and make sure no one had a chance to recover. The group was strung out as we had hoped and by the time we reached the finish climb for the first time, Claire was back to the front and the group was noticeably a lot smaller.

Around halfway through the race there were just 13 riders left at the front and so Claire and I took a breather and allowed some of the other riders to take up the pace setting. The race got very negative at this point, with the speed dropping significantly as everyone seemed to be taking the opportunity to recover. My fellow breakaway partner from Cheshire Classic, Molly Weaver was again showing strongly at the front alongside Laura Murray, but didn’t have any team mates to help and everyone seemed happy to risk the group behind coming back to us. Sarah Byrne attacked at the bottom of the climb with two laps to go and this split the race up and by the top of the climb there were only 5 riders left. I decided to attack whilst as we got over the brow and took Tamina Oliver from Abergavenny with me. We gained 50 seconds in the first lap away and another 40 in the second lap, so by the time we reached the bottom of Sunny Bank for the finish there was no way we could be caught.

I had spoken to last year’s winner Dani King about the race and she had told me you couldn’t attack the finish too early, so I waited until I thought it was almost too late before sprinting for the line. It’s not often there is a gap to give you the confidence to get your arms in the air, but I was delighted to be able to and take the win after what had felt like an epic weekend of racing!




Claire Galloway had given me so much in the first half of the race and after her superb ride in the National 25 the day before showed her awesome powers of recovery to finish inside the top 10 in the race as well. It was a fantastic weekend for the team and the final UK race we will do before the National Road Race in 2 weeks in Yorkshire.

I am now back in the Altitude Chamber at Manchester Metropolitan University for a couple of sessions this week and also looking forward to spending some time with one of my main charities, The Children’s Adventure Farm Trust. We have their Annual Ladies Lunch at Mere Golf Club on Wednesday and I will be appearing on the catwalk for the Fashion Show!

BRAMSHAW’S unassailable Julia Shaw won her fourth consecutive national 25-mile time trial championship on Tees-side on Saturday in a rapid 54min 57sec.It was the fifth 25-mile women’s title for the www.Drag2Zero rider and follows her recent sixth consecutive championship victory over 10 miles.Ciara Horne of Brotherton Cycles took silver almost two minutes in arrears with 56-48 from Rebecca Slack (London Dynamo) with 57-14 for bronze.Another multiple national champion, Michael Hutchinson (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp), fended off top opposition from Sky Pro Cycling’s Alex Dowsett to take gold in the men’s competition with a championship record time of 47-01, slicing 14 seconds off his own record set in 2005.Mind you, Dowsett was close, powering around in 47-08 for silver, while the bronze medal went to Shaw’s teammate Matthew Bottrill with 48-36.Poole-based High Wycombe CC member Adam Topham was best-placed southern rider with 51-03 for 13th place while Contre la Montre’s James Gilfillan was 31st with 52-24.
Heffernan hews minute from “personal”New Forest Cycling Club’s John Heffernan was overjoyed to hack 1min 2sec from his PB 10 in the wind-blown Team Axiom event between Liss and Liphook on Saturday.“It was hard coming back. It wasn’t just the headwind, but there was a hill I didn’t notice going out,” said John after clocking 21-48, which earned him 14th place in a quality field.Winner was Nicolas Hutchings (GS Grupetto) who got close to course record with his 30-mph-plus winning time of 19-14.VC St Raphael pair Simon Tout and Steve Walkling were second and third with 19-51 and 20-11, while their clubmate Martin Beale, a second-claim New Forest CC member was 22nd with 22-13.Other Team Axiom 10 times: Terry Icke (Poole Whrs) 20-56, Cliff Rowe (Bournemouth Jubilee Whrs) 22-10, Gary Tuskin (Poole Whrs) 22-45, Alan Sharpen (Sotonia CC) 25-53, Bob Jolliffe (New Forest CC) 27-53, Chris Summers (Sotonia) 28-00.Walkling moved up to head the result board in the following morning’s Team Axiom 25 with a quick 51-39 to beat Kingston Whrs’ Steve Irwin into second by 55 seconds. Chris clocks second best 10! New Forest’s Chris Hughes was happy to finish a chilly Bournemouth Jubilee Whrs 10 at Upton on Sunday with a time of 24-13, his second-best-ever, while clubmate Bob Jolliffe slowed from the previous day to 29-45. Second claim NFCC member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) finished with 23-16.Victory went to Poole Wheeler Gary Dighton with 21-12. He was followed by clubmate Andy Buddle (21-30) and Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) with 21-32.
Close to best! NFCC’s Stuart Peckham was near his best 25 time when he clocked 1-02-48 in a Poole Wheelers’ club event at Upton the previous weekend. First went to Andrew Matthews of Southdown Velo with 57-59 from Martin Aldridge of the promoting club with 1-00-30 and Bournemouth Jubilee’s Philip Evans (1-02-05).
Weather took toll! Rain led to the abandonment of New Forest CC 30 last Tuesday.
Another inter-club in offing! New Forest CC members are needed to represent their club in the second inter-club competition of the season: against Crabwood CC, which is promoting the first round, a 15-miler on the P164 at Lyndhurst on Thursday, June 31. Event HQ is Matley car park and the first rider will be away at 7.01pmThe return round, a 10 hosted by NFCC, is also on the P164 on Tuesday, July 10. HQ is Parc Pale and start time is 7.01pm.

British Heart Foundation Ride, Help Needed

Hi everyone After the debacle with the dreadful weather back in April which forced the British Heart Foundation into postponing their annual Dorset Bike Ride, the ride is being re-run next Sunday, 17 June. We at the Dorset Cycling Development Group help the BHF with this long-standing event by designing and sign-posting the route and arranging the majority of the volunteer help on the day (we’re not alone – other vital services are also provided by Raynet – the Radio Amateurs’ Emergency Network – and by a team of paramedics). Because this is a busy time of the year for local cyclists I’m anticipating a few problems getting some of the usual team of happy helpers out for next weekend so I’m probably going to need some extra help. I’d be grateful for a response from everyone please, and if you can’t help out this year yourself then maybe there’s someone you know who might be willing and able to lend a hand? Just reply to this email for simplicity – but phone me as below if there’s anything you need to ask or discuss. The full list of tasks and help needed is1. Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. 5 people to go around different sections of the course and erect the signage. First and foremost can the usual four helpers confirm their availability, or otherwise L, for this task please (I do one of the sections myself)2. Sunday morning, from 7:30am, HQ at QE School, Wimbornea. A team of 5 to help with rider registration in the School Hall. This is a rather attractive proposition as the main signing on is finished by 10:00am leaving you with the opportunity to then do the ride yourself or to go and help out with another task elsewhere. It might be necessary for one of the team to stay behind a little longer to deal with a handful of late starters … Instruction will be given on the morning before registration officially opens at 8 – it only takes a max of 10 minutes to learn the job Jb. A second team of 3 to marshal the car parking at the front of the school and just down the road at the playing fields. I already have an experienced security chap to head this up but he needs a couple of helpers. Again, the main task is over by 10-10:30.c. There is an excellent opportunity for a bike shop (or similar) to set up a sales/service stall to sell helmets, inner tubes etc etc to participants and provide service and advice to those who find that have arrived not totally prepared for the ride in front of them – there’s usually quite a number of such customers!3. Bike Service around the course. Service teams/people are needed to patrol the route (or position themselves at one of the key points en route) to attend to the needs of those who break down, puncture(*) etc en route. * Yes! You’d be surprised how many participants set out without the means or knowledge to deal even with a simple puncture – this is a charity ride that attracts all sorts of wonderful willing people eager to help raise funds for the British Heart Foundation and enjoy a nice ride in our beautiful Dorset countryside, but with very little prior experience of cycling J. (For those with a vehicle to patrol the route, it works - when you’re not already busy – by linking up with the Raynet radio stations positioned at key points around the route who liaise through Ride Control at HQ and are able to provide the latest information on who needs help where. Mobile phones can also be used but some of the mobile phone coverage around the route is pretty poor or non-existent).4. Marshals. A very friendly, easy task. Unlike marshals on races, you are not expected to stand in the road and try to control other traffic! Your role is to be a friendly face en route to give advice and help to the participants to make sure that they (i) stay on course; (ii) don’t go careering across busy turns and junctions without slowing/stopping and looking properly so as not to be a danger to themselves or other road users; (iii) give those who might be ‘flagging’ a bit of encouragement (or direct them back to HQ if they have fallen to far behind an achievable time schedule); and (iv) offer advice (and maybe a little simple help) where needed.5. ‘Meals on Wheels’. A couple of willing people to drive around the course early on and hand out lunch packages to the marshals to keep them going (the only reason two are needed is because the 25-milers reach one or two of the marshal points way ahead of those on the longer routes – although I suppose, at a pinch, one keen person could cover the whole route by going to the marshals at the early-start points first before going to those on the longer route sections. Expenses are claimable from our Group for those incurring out-of-pocket expenses. We don’t want any of you to be out of pocket for providing your time and services, so don’t be shy to ask for any petrol costs etc (or, in the case of task 3 above, ANY costs incurred that you have been unable to recover from the recipients of your assistance, plus a mileage allowance for all your mileage on the day). N.B. We can pay your expenses out of the small portion we receive from the BHF of the entry-fee part of what the participants pay (but NOT any of the sponsorship monies raised/donated). The rest of what we receive goes to provide grant aid to support local cycling projects (such as the school to whom we recently gave a grant to buy bikes so that they can include cycling in their PE lessons). In every other respect this is a pure charity ride, and traditionally a VERY successful one too, whose sole purpose is to raise funds for the wonderful work the BHF do. There are many other famous organised rides, such as the local Macmillan Ride taking place this weekend, that are also run on the same purely charitable basis, but please don’t confuse us with the ever-more-popular ‘industry’ of organised rides and sportives run by commercial operators, some of whom do also make donations to charities, but do so only as a percentage of the profits they make – I’ll leave you to speculate about the reality of what that might sometimes mean … I couldn’t possibly comment, as they say! Dighton.Icke & Jones in 3-up Win

Poole wheelers trio, Terry Icke, Gary Dighton & new boy, Paul Jones won the AC3RG 3 UP TTT on the P883. It was a good result for the Poole Wheelers who dropped Icke on the run in. Icke had ridden the West London CA 30 finishing 11th in 1.06.33 and was obviously feeling the effects.

Moreton Road Race: Ian Legg is the Daddy!! Results now added!

Jay Eastwood reports on a windy Moreton…….A low turn out in gale conditions but a win is a win! Ian Legg(Primera/Specialized) celebrated the birth of his daughter, Lily who was there with new mum Amy at her first race to watch Ian sprint to his first win of the season.

Jay Eastwood took second which should place him top of the leader board in the current series.

Primera Specialized were also rewarding their new eyewear sponsor Manbi International Sportswear who are supplying the team with Salice 006 glasses, a popular choice on the continent within the Pro Tour teams and now here with the Bournemouth based team.

Ian Legg Takes Victory in a Windy Round 3



Yesterday, after a wet and blustery day, the wind and rain subsided enough for Ian Legg (Primera Specialized) to take victory in the third round of the UK-Biking Moreton Road Race Series, just ahead of teammate Jay Eastwood.

Finishing in a group of 4 riders, it was a closely contested sprint between the 2 teammates, who gained the first 2 positions, ahead of Luke Gray (Baboco Cycling Team) and Mark Chadbourne (Ride Bike).

Steve Dring (Team Echelon-Rotor) was next over the line having been distanced from the winning group and forced to work determinedly by himself in the undesirable conditions. The remaining riders formed small groups and worked together well to try and cut the deficit, despite the continued high winds that made it particularly difficult for all.

The UK-Biking Primera Duo, of Garrett Hill and Keith Randle, worked together for much of the race & came home in 6th and 7th place respectively, holding off a group of three riders; Matthew Mildon , Sean Kenneally and Martin Aldridge for the remaining positions.

Headquarters
The event headquarters will be at Lytchett Matravers Village Hall Sports Club. This is the building in the centre of the Village Hall car park. Toilets and changing facilities are available there. Together with race numbers and signing on. Refreshments available here after the race.
( The HQ is in a residential area so please be as quiet as possible.)
Start.
To get to the start, turn right out of the HQ car park, and right again at the first crossroad by the public house. Proceed down out of the village,then fork right follow this lane down to the start at the junction with the A35.

START FROM RACE HQ: [D’urbervilles Hall, Wool], Neutralised from HQ turn into Colliers Road turn left to Village, turn left to A352 turn right over railway to RAB
[START CIRCUIT]: Race starts 500 meters past roundabout on A352 after (4miles) where at the top of a small hill turn left Worgret Heath on unclassified road. Proceed on the unclassified road through finish to junction with unclassified road. Turn left onto the unclassified road direction Wool. Proceed on unclassified road and pass Monkey World on left, to the RAD junction with the A352 to complete circuit.
FINISH: on the unclassified road, l mile after the left turn from the B352 at Worgret Heath by a Tank Turning on the fourth lap.

WARM weather continues to bring a rash of rapid rides from New Forest Cycling Club members with Gary Lock getting close to his “personal” to win Tuesday’s club 10 and Ben Boardman smashing his PB by more than three minutes at Poole the following evening. If that wasn’t enough, New Forest CC won the newly-instituted inter-club competition with Sotonia CC by six points on Thursday evening, despite losing by four points on the night. And you can add to that a clutch of gold awards in the Bournemouth Sportive held the previous weekend. Clutch of PBs in 10 The north-westerly that had blown all day dropped away on Tuesday evening for the 10 on the Lyndhurst-Beaulieu Road course.Times were quick from the start with first man, 72-year-old Peter Hawker, clocking 28-31. Sotonia’s Ben Rickaby, off number seven, did 23-42 for eventual fifth place; Geoff Weller improved to 28-56 for a comeback best, No 26, youngster Remi Bennett, finished with a PB of 31-22 as did Patrick Walters who was happy to dip below 28 minutes for the first time with 27-47.Ben Boardman did a “best on course” of 23-12 for fourth place while, starting two minutes later, Gary Lock hit top form to produce 22-35, just 14 seconds away from his PB.John Heffernan, who has beaten Lock in the past three events, pulled out all the stops but could not match his speed, finishing with 22-59 for third overall. Third place went to Southampton University RC’s Tim Wallis with 54-16.Ben later said: “It’s fair to say I was pretty chuffed.”He put his improvement down to a three-hour Retul Bike Fit with Vankru Cycling in Southampton.Determination wins Forest inter-clubNew Forest CC won the two-event inter-club competition with Sotonia CC by six points on Thursday.Forest fast man John Heffernan could not be there because of a regular sailing commitment. But Gary Lock, who was determined to do his bit for the club and missed out on the Poole 25 the previous evening to be in first class condition for the competition, hit his target and took first place with a time of 34-38 for the 15 miles south of Lyndhurst.The only rider to beat him in the overall stakes was Hargroves Cycles’ junior international Jon Dibben, himself a former NFCC rider, who clocked 33-19.Sotonia’s Stuart Martingale, Colin Yeates and Gawain Young filled the next three places for two, three and four points with times of 35-13, 35-31 and 36-02.New Forest’s Ben Boardman was fifth with 36-04 and Stuart Ward sixth. Gold and silver for Forest four Lee Hookem, Barry Wootten and Steve Roberts finished the Bournemouth Sportive in Gold times the previous Sunday, while Simon Dobby rode the standard distance in 4-44-31 for a silver award.Lee’s time was 6-08-36 and Barry’s 6-13-04. No time was available for Steve.Barry described it as “a blisteringly hot day and a lovely scenic course through Wiltshire and Dorset”.
Chris rides Godric 10 Chris Jolliffe clocked 26-44 in the Godric CC 10 in Suffolk on Tuesday. First place was taken by Jim Burgess of Anglia Velo with a rapid 21-09.

Bournemouth Cycling Centre: One Year On

Facility Manager Alan MaCrae looks back on the first 12 months.

So after 15 years of waiting for a track to be built, and 1 month after the 2012 summer finally arrived, how is “Track Cycling” looking in Bournemouth?
From the perspective of the Bournemouth Cycling Centre I would say “Very well thank you”. Last year the Centre used the couple of summer months available after the opening to introduce track cycling to the local cycling community but stopping short of any full on racing. Many riders have grasped the nuances of safe bike handling on the 34 degree banking and, with a little help, most find they can not only cope but have relished the challenge. There is quite a lot to cope with, but like learning to drive on the motorway, you just take it step by step.
Here clubs like the Poole Wheelers and Bournemouth Arrow have taken the lead in running Club sessions helping their own novice trackies take that absolutely first step. Support for younger riders also came from Richard Eastham’s Feria Sport’s Kids Club Saturday morning, proving to the under 12s there is nothing to fear. The Cycling Centre’s own “Accreditation” (the Centre’s own driving test) has provided that essential formality so all riders in open sessions know that those around them can be trusted. This is supplemented by the Bournemouth Arrow’s open Wednesday evening “Intermediate Session” to help riders take that next step.
In the last month, the Bournemouth Arrow promoted Track League provides one more significant piece of the jigsaw supported by a great team of volunteers drawn from across the cycling community. The invaluable support provided by Raymond Brown gives the organisers the freedom to concentrate on getting the structure of the League right so as to provide a range of levels of competition. The recent Regional Youth Omnium promoted by the Poole Wheelers was a timely example of what will be achieved here. Nearly 100 young riders up to the age of 16 from Welwyn, Brighton, Reading and Herne Hill gave ample demonstration of just how competent local riders will be after just a couple of year’s track riding.
To open the gates to the next generation of local young riders Winton College and Glenmoor School, with 1500 pupils between them and located right next door to the track are just about to launch their Cycling Centre of Excellence. Here the students can make use of the Bournemouth Arrow’s own Wattbikes as well as having their own fleet of track bikes funded through Dorset Cycling Development Group. The Olympic Torch goes past their door on 13th July and the whole school day is being given over to sport, one of which of course is the opportunity to ride the track.

Progress is all about gaining experience in organisation, coaching and rider development. The League is now pretty close to getting the right balance of rider ability in each group to facilitate rider progression from Youth to B Group to A Group. The ultimate aim is to ensure the highest possible standard of competition for both individuals and clubs in the A League so, for those that want to, the step up to being competitive at Regional and then National level is achievable. The League’s weekly “Invitation” events, and the BH Postcode Championships in August are specifically designed so local riders, clubs and teams can “try out” and enjoy the competition those events that are included in National Championships can bring.
I would summarise by saying “A month into the summer, what can be seen at the moment is just the start, as a result of the background work already put in, track cycling in Bournemouth is on an upward path”.
