…a3crg Summer Time Trials 2016

Finishing the Greatham Series on the usual date the week before, ...a3crg threw in a "bonus event" on the very much underused P883 at Buriton. What a "Bonus Night" it turned out to be for a lot of the riders, ten riders sub-twenty, course record broken and the women's course record almost broken (but that wasn't a problem).

The course hasn't been used for two years plus it was only ever on a cold Good Friday, so no summer events had been held for a number of years. However though, there was a slight struggle to convince some people to ride it, but come the night there were enough riders who knew that it was an excellent course. Because of the failing light at this time of year the maximum limit was seventy riders and sixty nine riders signed on to bring the "2016 Summer Series" to a fitting finale.

Pat Wright of Paceline wished he had pressed just bit harder coming to the line recording the winning time of 19:00 while second placed Kevin Tye just ten seconds back felt that had he ridden the course more often it would have been an "18". Meanwhile in the women's result Julie Shaw just missed her course record by just six seconds, and while analysing result Julia realised that was the last time she had ridden the course in May 2008. However Julia did have the consolation of winning on standard from Kevin Tye by almost half a minute (27 secs).

Second placed woman and likely to be the South's 2016 BAR Champion, Laura Bartlett stopped the watch 21:36 with Simone Dailey in 3rd place with 21:52 and in fourth place age group medal winner in last week's National 25 Sarah Matthews 21:56, four women sub-22.

In the Team Competition, Fareham Wheelers took the prize with a stunning time of 01:00:05 beat the VeloRefinded (old) boys by just three seconds while the promoting club were modest with their third place.

There were many who recorded PB's, but the record must go to Tim Grose who did 22:56 and said that beat his time set in 2001!!! But lastly spare a thought for Mike Stafford, the Portsmouth North End rider was shaking his head at the event saying that he did a "19" in a local club ten, but only came tied ninth!!!

Boardman, Thompson Hunt and Moody wrap up division titles

NEW Forest CC held the last of the 10 series on Tuesday on the P164 cou5rse, starting at Boltons Bench and finishing near Beaulieu Road Station via Ipley Crossroads. A fast night’s riding was anticipated due to the perfect North Westerly wind conditions which would assist the riders on the opening leg from Boltons Bench toward Beaulieu. Ben Boardman finished the season off as he started by claiming first place in division one in a cracking time of 21:42, over a minute clear of Stewart Ward, who recorded an excellent pb in 22:53. Nick Buck made up the top three in 23:13. Ben , who had a relatively untroubled evening commented afterwards that he was delighted with his season, and laid down an ominous marker for next campaign as he hopes to make further improvements over the winter and come even stronger next year. Ben ran out division one winner with maximum 90 points. Perennial runner up, Sacha Ring claimed second spot with 85, and Antony Green marked a fine club return with 82 points.
Lyndon Thompson shower true grit and determination after like week’s incident by again claiming the honours in Division two in a rapid 24:09. A minute further back was Andy Townsend in 25:09 who just held off Peter Trunwit into third in 25:13. Andy was just behind Peter at the half way mark on the course, but dug deep to overhaul the narrow deficit to take second. Lyndon maxxed out division two with 90 points. Richard Mason’s reward for a strong winters training was runners up spot in 83, just nudging out bob Dowling into third on 82.
Adrian Hunt continued his recent dominant form with another good victory in division three with a time of 26:54. The victory had greater significance as it moved Adrian on level points with Oliver Moody in the final standings. Oliver Moody capped for an excellent first season in second place with a solid time of 27:27. Peter Weaver made up the top three positions in 28:06. The final division three standings are Oliver Moody and Adrian Hunt joint first on 88 points, Peter Hawker capped a fine season in third on 74 points.

Bournemouth & Dist Women's CA Two-Up & Tandem 10, Report/Results

Husband and wife Pairing, Louisa & Andy Cooper (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) won the annual Ladies Two-Up on the P311 Ringwood-Sopley course on a hot and breezy afternoon.

The Coopers looked fluid and fast as they raced clear of the field putting 1 minute 21 seconds into Lili MaClean & Mitch Webber with Michelle Walters & Paul Jones a further 5 seconds back in third place.

In the Tandem Event, Erica Fogg & Stephen Whitewick were clear winners despite finishing on a softening tyre, a rear wheel slow puncture doing little to slow them up. Ray Hughes sufferd a hornet bite on the knee before the start but bravely soldiered on, piloting Mary Corbett to second place.

Like all "fun events" things are taken very seriously, post-race talk at the HQ revolved around aerodynamic skinsuits, go-faster strips, warm up strategies & finding a new partner for next year. Race organiser Claire Newman always books good weather for this event, the outside headquarters complete with toilet tent demand it. When the talking was done, Claire and her team retired to the Elm Tree Inn to catch the end of the Olympic Road Race on TV along with some liquid refreshment of course.
