Bournemouth Track League

The inaugural meeting of the new Bournemouth Track league Association was held on Friday 15th November 2014 at Canford School. Adam D’Arcy-Wykes has taken over promotion of the league which will move to Friday evenings next season. Sixteen people, representing, Bournemouth Arrow, Poole Wheelers, Bournemouth Jubilee, VC ST Raphael, plus two unattached attended this first meeting. A nominal committee was elected to serve for twelve months, their first action being to drop the word “Association”. An open floor discussion then followed covering the good and not so good aspects of the last two seasons at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre. Broad agreement was reached concerning a later start time of 19:15, a coach led track warm-up, time keeper, PA system and hot coffee! Organisationally the last two seasons have been a success, the challenge remains the same, How to get more people racing? There are over 300 accredited riders at the BCC, yet the average league attendance is around 30! Wykes is keen for the league to be welcoming, friendly, approachable and open to all, equally it must retain its “raceface” and be a serious, competitive environment. A suggestion that the league adopt a similar constitution to the old Poole track league was popular:
Article 1. The league shall be known as the Bournemouth Track League
Article 2. The league shall have no other rules!
Keep red tape to a minimum, keep things simple, after all it is just bike racing and if it does not work this year it can be changed next year.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers Prize Presentation 2013

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers celebrated the year with their annual awards dinner at Colehill Cricket club near Wimborne. Guest of honour, Gary Dighton(Poole Wheelers) spoke light heartedly about the rivalry between the two clubs and accepted a few boo’s with good grace, all tongue in cheek, of course. In a straw poll of miles ridden during the week, the former Olympian came out on top with 335. Dighton praised the club for their open time trial promotions and is looking forward to next year’s National 50, promoted by the Jubilee. Zena Dighton provided the glamour and accepted a boquet of flowers, Zena was part of the Oundle Velo team that set comp record at 15 miles in 1996, a record that still stands today. Forty Eight members and guests attended the dinner, a far cry from the one hundred & fifty plus “bun fights” of the past. However social secretary, Kevin Ridge, with the blessing of the committee, provided free wine with the meal and a good time was had by all.

British Cycling Southern Region Recognised by National Council

South Region BC has won the British Cycling Sunday Mirror Trophy for the highest increase in membership. The southern region saw a 49% increase in 2013. The trophy was awarded at BC National Council meeting on 9th November in Crewe, Cheshire. Robert Howden was elected President, succeeding Brian Cookson who took on the Presidency of the UCI in September.

Bournemouth Arrow CC 50 Mile Reliability Trial

Making a welcome return to the autumn calendar, the Bournemouth Arrow 50 mile reliability trial attracted a super entry of 84 riders. Low numbers on a rain soaked day some five years ago had seen the club call time on their only reliability trial. The Arrow however are on the up: the healthy turn out reflects the confidence running through Bournemouth’s senior club and young legs kept the average age only slightly higher than the average speed. Course designer, Steve Moss had done his homework, providing an interesting, varied and, at times, challenging route across the New Forest. (a 33 mile option was availlable for those that "needed" to get off home) “Mossy” policed the fast boys in the early miles, passing puncture victims from the slower groups in the mucky lanes around Woodfalls. The former roadman/sprinter looked impressive on his MTB but it couldn’t last, gracefully slipping off the back at Nomansland. Along the Ornamental drive to Brockenhurst the tailwind kids you that you are fit, the headwind slog, back across Wilverly plain reminds you that there is room for improvement. Bright sunshine though, means sunglasses in November and no stiff breeze will spoil the fun. Through Burley and across Slap Bottom to Ripley and the pot-hole strewn Dragons Lane return’s us to the HQ at Bisterne village hall. Organiser, Sean Conway has done a good job as the Arrow back-room boys & girls serve up welcome tea and cake. Preceding the ride Moss had called the chattering groups to order, a minutes silence on this Remembrance Sunday. Paying respect to the fallen, others that gave so much, so that we can muck about on our bikes.

Two Track Riders Wanted for Coaching Certificate

TWO TRACK RIDERS WANTED FOR COACHING CERTFICATE

Qualified track coach Richard Eastham is looking for two riders to act as training subjects for his British Cycling Level 3 coaching certificate. Currently qualified to Level 2 standard, that allows him to coach group sessions, Richard is now looking to obtain his Level 3 certificate that will allow him to deliver bespoke one-to-one coaching.
Participating riders will need to be active on the track and will need to provide feedback on a prescribed series of training sessions over a 12 week period. There will be no charge for the coaching advice as Richard will be very grateful for the riders’ time and cooperation. Hopefully, the riders will go a little faster too!
This would be an ideal opportunity for a rider intending to take part in the Calshot Winter Track League. Participating riders can be male or female, adult or junior. Ideally one would be a ‘sprinter’ and one an ‘endurance’ rider.

Who?? Jason Falconer :-Teacher profile-
Recent. July 07 2012 Jason Falconer was hospitalised after a S.M.I.D.S.Y (sorry mate I didn’t see you) collision. The advice of the Neurological doctors finalising full recovery in September 12 strongly observed that Jason’s evident physical fitness and flexibility from yoga and a lifetime of cycling had led to rapid recovery from injury. Herein direct proof of the connection between regular cycling and yoga practice resulting in rapid recovery from injury, and the vast majority of sport cyclists do sustain injuries throughout their careers. As with other sports there are relatively few individuals who have publicised the link between benefits of Yoga practice, example being Ryan Giggs from Football, who at 40+ is the only remaining Premier League footballer retained at that age. Jason would like to share the health, flexibility and self- awareness benefits of learning a practice with you.

Background. Yoga came to Jason after several years of friends and colleagues telling him the practice would sort out his hyperactivity. Early Integral Yoga classes in Australia 1998 transformed into years of training with a variety of U.K teachers. By 2008 relocation to Bournemouth enabled Jason to find Keith Grant, where his teacher training began. Jason at this time 2009 began incorporating Yoga sessions into group work with colleagues and others, building experience of teaching the original stress relieve techniques to others, whilst maintaining a daily practice pushing the edges of his own ability. In July 2013 Jason completed the Independent Yoga Network 200 hours qualification with Keith, whos varied background includes training with Luminaries such as Godfrey Devereaux, work with Tripsichore Yoga, and who is now a Yoga Elder with I.Y.N having 5000 hours teaching experience with the fascinating science of Yoga.

Yoga for Cyclists –Y.f.C consists of three major themes:-
Firstly:- Compensatory:- Dealing with what gets lost during frequent repetitive cycling activity. Bringing a range of movements to rebalance the physical self, a range of fundamental movements to equalise body harmony, probably the most requested aspect of the project. Within the realms of most students who simply want to rebalance the physical body.
Physiotherapists have commented that everyone over 40 should practise Yoga, We associate every sequence that improves joint flexibility with this theme.
Secondly:- Supplemental:- Building overall fitness which can be utilised within the sporting interests of the student. The most physically demanding option, applied to road, track and mountain bike riders these aspects of lessons aim to strengthen the students ability to access full use of the lungs and deep breathing and link to a very controlled raising of the heart rate, similar to interval training familiar in above cycle sport disciplines. This form of yoga training can help student to maintain high levels of fitness and flexibility, and supplement this by extending variety of movements whilst at the same time utilising higher heart rates at a high level of self-awareness. All this practice will assist in racing scenarios across cycle sport where racers have to apply sprint tactics during selected short periods of races. We associate the most dynamic sequences with this theme.
Thirdly:- Regenerative:- Adding the opportunities to spend time refocusing the mind and body through the meditative aspects of pranayama (breathing techniques) and stillness.

Class aims-
Easing common cycle related complaints- identifying postures that will alleviate common cycle related pain both short and long term. Compensatory.
Flexibility work- identifying all muscles that shorten as a result of cycling, and exploring postures that will lengthen them. Increasing full mobility in the joints that suffer from reduced mobility during cycling, in particular hips, shoulders and knees. Compensatory.
Core strengthening - Simultaneously lengthening and strengthening the muscles which are underused (postural back and abdominal muscles), therefore alleviating overused muscle groups and stressed joints. Compensatory.
Spine work - Finding full mobility in this long sequence of joints that often ends up suffering from reduced mobility, lengthening the spine as well as exploring counteracting postures such as twists, lateral bends and back bends. Compensatory.
Waist-down work - focussing specifically on the biggest muscle groups as well as the overused groups. Lengthening the commonly overdeveloped quadriceps, hip flexors and tight hamstrings. Compensatory
Backbends - exploring the group of postures that perhaps most significantly address cyclists tendencies/ complaints (including upper back/ postural tendencies) by reversing the cyclists postures. Compensatory/ Supplemental.
Inversions and arm balances - Exploring fun postures that give the legs a well-deserved rest whilst exploring concentration, use of breath and upper body strength. Supplemental.
Balances - Again, these are fun postures that are actually demanding in terms of concentration, correct posture, strong leg/arm work but also ease tension in tense cyclists' muscle groups. Compensatory/ Supplemental.
Developing a daily sequence - putting together a supplemental practice that can be done solo at home. Dynamic sequences to become a regular addition to the athletes schedule. Supplemental.

Class structure. Each classes main aim is that students learn how to strengthen and stretch mindfully in class and apply these at any point pre or post ride and keep commonly developed cycle related injuries at bay. The elements above are taught within a sequenced dynamic class including warm- up, posture work then relaxation time. Students gradually get to know how their own body functions. From what you were born with to what has evolved over a lifetime of all your various activities and tendencies. Once you have identified those, then you can understand why some are agonising and others aren't. Obviously, the agonising ones are usually addressing parts of our body that are stiff and/ or weak and then there are those that we just find plain scary.
This info gradually gets processed gradually over time by body and mind and the poses that we love to hate gradually become the poses we love to love.

Calshot Winter Track League 2013/14, Results Rnd 1

Track racing returns to the Calshot Velodrome this Sunday (10th) with the first round of the winter league. The 142 metre indoor track at Fawley is smaller than the Olympic size facility at Ensbury Park but has the one thing the Bournemouth venue does not, a roof, allowing 12 month use. The league runs every Sunday till February 2nd with a full programme for youth, junior & senior riders.

Dorset Miles: Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 50 mile Reliabilty Trial

Nobody seems to know how long the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 50 mile reliability trial has been running, the mid-eighties for sure, perhaps even longer? Nothing has changed much in 30 years, a different HQ, the Horns Inn was always more appealing, if, sometimes regretted later in the day. The course is pretty much as it has always been, the cost has doubled over the years but at £1 few grumble. Clockwise, 94 set off between 08:30 & 09:30, on a bright, windy morning; a few showers came and went, the prepared had rain jackets. Gravel and mud in the lanes will be there till spring, punctures can and did happen. No tea stop these days, at least not official and there is plenty back at the HQ, courtesy of Matt & Aimee. The pace quickens towards the end, just like every club ride up and down the country today. No one ever remembers who wins a sprint in November, except, of course the winner. The traffic is heavy in Wimborne but the ride is done, bacon sandwiches to the winners, cake to the losers, it’s all the same at this time of the year!
