Downie on Top at Downton, Report & Full Results

Matt Downie (Primera-Teamjobs) brought his road season to a close winning the Downton 2 Day in the New Forest. The 20 year old from Totton had responded to the gauntlet thrown down by Ken Buckley (Spokes BPC Racing) with some style, winning the road race and the individual time trial to take this end of season chipper come classic.

Taking an 11 second lead into the 24 km test, Downie flew round the rolling circuit in 33.13, to end his season on a high. Oscar Hutchings rode strongly to second place with 34.59 but lost too much time in the road race to contest the overall. Tim Flynn ( Poole Wheelers) took third in the time trial with an impressive ride of 35.05.

Buckley had produced a storming ride in the opening 2.4 km prologue. Uphill but not a hill climb, Buckley clocked 4:03 seconds "up" Wick Lane, a 5 second advantage over Oscar Hutchings (V C Equipe-Flix) and 6 seconds quicker than both Downie and Martin Rowland (UK Biking, Bmth Cycleworks/Trek), tying for third place.

Downie rode from the front in the following 52 km handicap road stage across Bramshaw Heath, driving the chase to the groups ahead. Sensing a drop in the pace Downie attacked taking Red Walters (Sotonia CC) with him. Walters was a passenger as Downie caught the leaders and rode straight through, dropped his shadow and soloed to victory.

It was his 14th win of a season that started at Perfs back in February, he intends to ride cyclo-cross through the winter and has yet to sort out a team for next year. Despite breaking his tri-bars, Buckley held on to take second overall with T J Key in 3rd place. Th 21st edition of the TLI Downton Classic was a great way to end the season Glenn Longland has the reputation and the renown to pull together helpers and sponsors and his ever so slightly rebellious approach goes down well, even when blaming the riders for an absent marshall. Long may it continue! In 21 years has anyone ever won all three stages? We dont think so.
