Winchester Win for Gutsy Chittenden!

Lucy Chittenden (Unatt) produced a gutsy solo performance to win the Winchester Criterium ahead of sign-on-the-line favourite, Jo Tindley (Matrix Fitness -Vulpine). Chittenden, Tindley, Rebecca Carter (WyndyMilla) & Ruby Chappell (Behind the Bike Shed) had forged ahead early on in the 40 minute plus 3 lap race. Chittenden, a former GB funded triathlete knew she would not win a sprint finish and this was clearly on her mind as she opened up a gap on the cobbled rise through the finish line after 20 minutes of racing.

The 22 year old from Farnham, Surrey put her head down and rode away. The three chasers had the power to bring Chittenden back but too much early hesitation, as Chappell & Carter looked to Tindley to do the work, played into the hands of the lone leader. A knee injury cut short Chittenden’s multi-sport ambitions but that disappointment seemed to be far behind her as she powered around the streets of the historic city, building an unassailable lead. Unattached Chittenden crossed the line nearly 40 seconds clear, a victory that wil surely see her riding for a team next year. Tindley comfortably won the kick for second place but had hoped for better.

Murison Wins in Winchester!

Al Murison (Bikeshed-Uex)) won the second Winchester Criterium, sprinting to victory on the cobbled High Street after a near race-long break. Murison got away with Andy Hargroves & Richard Mardle (Felt Colbornes-Hargroves RT), Jody Crawforth (Hargroves-Ridley RT) Chris McNamara (Pedal Heaven Colbornes RT) , Daniel Guest (Performance Cycles) & Joe Barry (Ride 24/7). These seven established a gap as early as the second lap and never really looked back on the one kilometre technical course.. Barry was always struggling to hold the pace and dropped back after a few laps leaving six at the front but the gap continued to grow as the half dozen knocked out 1 minute 50 second laps.

It was good to see Wouter Sybrandy (Sigma Sport .co.uk) riding strongly at the front of the chasing group, after a tough couple of years following a nasty crash in the Tour of Britain in 2012. Sybrandy looked good and the rest of the chasers were happy to leave him to it as he led the pursuit single handed. At half distance the gap was over 30 seconds and riders were being lapped, Sybrandy continued to push a huge gear but needed some help and none was forthcoming as the lead reached 40 seconds. Finally Sybrandy got some assistance as Ben Simmons (Team Wiggle), Mike Smith (Cycleworks.co.uk) & Grant Bayton (Ride 24/7) began to ride. Up front the goodwill continued as all took their turn, the injection of pace behind though had seen the gap drop to 24 seconds in just three laps. Andy Hargroves, last year’s winner, had got himself in the break but was the first to go when Murison & Mardle attacked. Crawforth & McNamara had it covered but Guest was left to chase as Hargroves faded. The chasing group was also getting smaller as the pace started to tell with 3 to go. At the bell, McNamara led, he had not missed a turn for over an hour and was still on the front coming up the high street for the final time. Crawforth came round the too-honest McNamara but had Mardle & Murison on his wheel in the uphill finish and could hold neither off as Murison took his 10th win of the season. Guest fought his way back but the effort would cost in the finale, finishing 5th behind McNamara.

In the last two laps I knew I had a good chance, I like to wait for the sprint but you never know. We worked fairly well but to be honest I did not think we would be caught, it’s an odd little circuit, I hit the barriers with my shoulder a few times”

New Forest CC Club 10,12/8/14,Results, Report

Andrew Hanley writes.......The final round of the popular 10 series was completed on the P164 from Boltons Bench, Lyndhurst to Ferny Rise. The last knockings from Hurricane Bertha were in evidence as a gusty brisk Southwesterly provided an extra challenge for the riders, particularly on the last leg heading towards Beaulieu Road Station. Ray Claridge representing GA Cycles was the fastest rider on the night with a time of 22.51, Stuart Peckham confirmed his standing at the top of Div 1 by winning maximum points clocking 23.28. to take the title. The battle for second in the championship was won by Sasha Ring who had a puncture free ride, edging out James Bannister into third place overall for the season. On the night John Heffernan finished joint second with Sasha in a time of 23.44, ahead of James Bannister with 23.55.

The Division 2 title had been decided earlier with Gavain Robinson winning, and was left to Dan Mitchell to claim his third win of the year to confirm his runner up spot with third overall going to Richard Mason. Alex Setchell continued his domination of Division 3, finishing 40 seconds ahead of Darren Ridge, with Chris Mills completing the top three, just missing out of evens by a mere 4 seconds. Clair Gronow prevailed in the ladies category ahead of the battle between birthday girl Tracy Mitchell and Paula Eardley.

Jolliffe Second at Ride London

Alex Jolliffe (Team Terminator) topped off a great week taking second place in the Prudential Ride London GP. The day after his title winning ride in the 500m TT at the Youth & Junior Track champs, Weymouth-Based Jolliffe, representing the South Region, showed off his versatility taking second place in the sprint. Also in action on the 1.3 mile circuit around St James Park in the capital were Ali Fielding, 33rd and in the girls race, Eve Jefferies, 26th & Becky Raybould, 29th.

Walkling's Fastest in Ladies Two Up!

Lesley & Steve Walkling (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) missed the event record by 7 seconds but were still comfortable winners of the BDWCA Two-Up at Ringwood. Mr & Mrs Walking followed up their mid-week, 19:35, win in the A3crg 10 with another strong ride on the P303 on the Hampshire/Dorset border. The husband and wife pairing, who clocked 51.43 in the Farnham RC 25 event last week have the Duo Normand race in France in September in their sights and are looking good. A stiff southerly breeze on the outward leg to Sopley probably denied the Walking’s the event record, the wind assisted trip through the lanes back to the “outdoor” HQ at Kingston made it close but not close enough. Enthusiastic event secretary, Claire Newman (Crabwood cc) affectionately calls the race the “Tarts Two-Up, yes, it is a bit of fun but the urgent shouts of “COME ON” followed by the higher pitched replies of “WAIT” prove that it does matter!!
