British Cycling Chief Exec Hails Froome!

BRITISH CYCLING CHIEF EXECUTIVE HAILS CHRIS FROOME AFTER HISTORIC VICTORY IN THE VUELTA A ESPANA

Chris Froome has become the first British rider to win the Vuelta a Espana after beating Vincenzo Nibali over 21 gruelling stages to claim victory in Madrid.

Celebrating Froome’s success, British Cycling’s chief executive Julie Harrington said:

“What Chris Froome has achieved over the last 12 months has cemented his place as one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen. To win the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana in the same year puts him up there with the best Grand Tour riders in the history of the sport. The cycling community in this country and indeed the whole nation are extremely proud of him.”

Jurassic Coast Road Race 2017, Entries Still Open

Entries are still open for the Jurassic Coast race at Wool in Dorset, the last throw of the dice perhaps for 2/3/4 cat riders on the south coast. The 56 mile race on the Lulworth circuit features 4000ft of climbing over 10 laps with the finish line high above Lulworth Cove on the world heritage listed coast line.

Peters Takes Gold in Junior 10!

Caitlin Peters (i-Team CC) won the National Junior 10-Mile Championships in Cumbria, clocking 24:00 on a windy day to claim the title by 17 seconds from Miriam Jessett (Tyneside Vagabonds CC). Fareham-based Peters who also won silver in the National 25 mile event and was celebrating her 16th birthday told "LR,LR"

"The course was more windy than I was expecting but luckily the rain held off. I could see my minute man for the majority of the ride and managed to catch her after 6 miles. The drag after the roundabout was hard as you were already in the red and were now facing the wind. With about a mile and a half to go I gave it everything all the way to the finish. I felt good,comfortable during the ride but wasn't sure that I'd won it. To find out I had was a massive relief and it's a great birthday present!!! Up until now I've had 4 over all 2nd places but to take the top spot this time felt awesome!"

In the junior mens Championship, Jacob Aries (Primera-teamjobs) came 7th in 21:06, with teammate Tom Temple, 9th, 21:19, Jake Wright (Zappis RT) took the title with 20.15.

Race Abandoned as Horse Scatters Peloton!

The Gillingham & District Wheelers "John Holman Memorial" was abandoned after a horse jumped a field gate into the peloton shortly after the start. With one rider needing hospital treatment the race was left without ambulance cover and with heavy rain continuing to fall the decision to call the race off was taken. John Holman, who passed away earlier this year, was a long time member of the Gillingham club and a great supporter of local racing,always marshalling and helping out. Before the race, riders toasted John with their bidons at a wet Henstridge Airfield on the Dorset/Somerset border. Barely a mile into the 60 mile race the horse cleared a 5-bar gate before scattering the peloton, Robin Burrow (Team Botrill HSS Hire) suffered a suspected fractured pelvis and was airlifted to Southmead Hospital,Bristol, the horse was later safely recovered. Several other riders suffered minor injuries including Kim Little (Merida Factory Racing) & Tom Clements (Off Camber) who both assisted the paramedics. Initially it was hoped to restart the race but with the rain getting heavier there was little enthusiasm from the cold wet bunch and with conditions worsening, Chief Commisaire Lawrence Heaven took the decision to abandon the event. Burrow told "LR,LR" "Im not great,i have multiple fractures on my pelvis and another on my spine,i was airlifted to Yeovil, stabilised there, then blue lighted to Southmeads. After operating the doctors have told me i will be hospital for two weeks and then on crutches for another 12 weeks. It was pretty traumatic!I am Very grateful to all those who helped , I'll thank people in due course,when i'm less spaced out!"

Sixpenny Brewery Road Race, Start List

56 Mile race for 3/4 Cat Riders Depart 10:00am
The event headquarters will open at 0800hrs and will be signed HQ as you come in from the A354 (main road)
Pimperne Village Hall Northfield Road, Pimperne Dorset, DT11 8UU

Race HQ is at Pimperne Village Hall. Roll out from hall and head South east for 500m along Chruch Road, before turning left onto the A354 heading north east towards Salisbury.
Exit 30 mph into national speed limit, end of neuteral section, and continue along A354 for approx 3.6 km where you reach a staggered crossroads at Tarrant Hinton. Turn left and enter the valley road.
Follow the valley road north west through Tarrant Hinton and along into Tarrant Gunville, there are a few narrow sections so beware. Continue along through Tarrant Gunville on the valley road and pass through two narrow chicanes that will be marshalled but still take care and onto the base of the climb up Stubhampton Hill.
At the top of the climb turn left at a staggered crossroads onto the C13 heading south. Continue along the C13 heading south and descending for 6.2 km, passing the entrance to the Sunrise Business Park just before the roundabout with the A350.
Turning left at the roundabout continue along A350 for 600m onto the roundabout with the A354. Turn left at this roundabout and drop down for 2km into the village of Pimperne (30mph) and complete 1 lap, 12.3miles

The prime will be contested on the 3rd time across the Prime Line at Collingwood corner. The hill out of Pimperne towards Tarrant Hinton.

Prizes will be presented after the race. You cannot win two prizes, so you will be allocated the higher value prize and then your other position prize will roll over to the next eligible rider. Any rider not present will forfeit the award at the discretion of the organiser.

TLI Road Championships

The second round of the TLI Cycling National Road Race Championships takes place on Sunday, 10th September on the Siddington circuit in Cheshire. This year the event incorporates the Parkinson Memorial Road Race and is organised by Jill Wesley on behalf of the Macclesfield Wheelers Cycling club.

Due to the popularity of the championships which each year sees the red, white and blue banded national championship jersey awarded to each age category winner, the events are being run over two separate days. The first was dedicated to events for C,D,E,F,G,H categories and junior female members. This second event is for S,M,A,B categories and junior male members, and kicks off at 10.00am. Race headquarters is at the Allostock Village Hall, Chapel Lane, Allostock WA16 9LN.

The winner of each age category will receive a national championship jersey and gold medal, with the 2nd and 3rd riders claiming silver and bronze medals.

Unfortunately not a single female entry was received by the event closing date even though they are encouraged to compete by the unisex nature of TLI Cycling's age category structure. Females are allocated an age category which is typically 3 bands above that of a male competitor of the same age, which means for example that females aged 30 to 39 directly compete in the same category as males aged 50 to 54, so the lack of interest is surprising.

The Glenn Longland 2 Day, run under TLI rules takes place October 7th/8th at Downton in Wiltshire and is open to both men & women

Three Silvers for GB at Para-Cycling Worlds

THREE SILVERS FOR GREAT BRITAIN CYCLING TEAM AT UCI PARA-CYCLING ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Great Britain Cycling Team won three time trial silver medals on day two of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships.

Ben Watson took C3 silver on his international debut before the tandem duos of Steve Bate and Adam Duggleby and Lora Fachie and Corrine Hall added two more silver medals to the tally in South Africa.

Bate and Duggleby won their first ever world championships medal - on either the road or the track - in the men’s B time trial.

The pair crossed the line in 39:20.930 to take silver - just 3.66 seconds behind Poland’s Polak and Ladsoz who took gold.

The British duo had produced a stunning ride to finish second after suffering a mechanical on the start line which cost them 25 seconds - making the silver medal a bittersweet moment.

There was a third British silver medal in the women’s B time trial, Lora Fachie and her pilot Corrine Hall finishing five seconds behind the Irish duo of Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal.

Silver for Watson at Para-Worlds

SUPERB SILVER FOR BEN WATSON AT UCI PARA-CYCLING ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Great Britain Cycling Team’s Ben Watson won time trial silver on his UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships debut.

The British rider stopped the clock in the C2 race in 33:26.110 to reach the podium in Pietermaritzburg.
His British teammates Simon Price and Crystal Lane-Wright finished ninth and fifth respectively.

Watson was not only making his world championships debut, but his first ever appearance for the Great Britain Cycling Team and made a superb start to his international career.

The British rider held first place after the opening lap, clocking the fastest run in the men’s C2 category by crossing the line in 10:49.

By the end of the second lap, the lead had switched places with Canada’s Michael Sametz - a bronze medallist in the time trial at the Rio Paralympics - edging out an eight second gap.


Sametz showed his experience in the final lap to go further ahead, finishing his run in 32:48.920 - the only rider to go under 33 minutes.

But Watson’s consistent riding demonstrated his time trialling ability, and he crossed the line 37 seconds behind the Canadian to win silver.

Bronze went to Esneider Munoz Marin of Colombia, around 52 seconds behind Watson.
