• Will Stephenson (Rapha Condor JLT) got his first win for his new team with victory at the Mountbatten circuit in Portsmouth. The Ringwood rider was one of a group of five that lappped the field. Stephenson has raced a lot already this season and proved too strong for second & third placed Al Murison (Equipe) & Andy Bryson (Peter Hansford Cycles). Stephenson followed up his win with a strong ride at the Ham Hill race in Somerset, just missing the winning move. “The legs were feeling good but I missed the break” Next up for the Rapha man is the Tour Du Loir-et Cher, in the Loire valley. The tough 5 day race based around Blois,south-west of Paris gets under way today (10/04/13)

• Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) took third place on the 64 mile stage 1 of the junior tour of the Mendips. Fielding was part of a four man group that escaped at half distance. Zac May (Wales Junior Development) won the sprint. The following days ,hilly, 60 mile stage at Chew Stoke, Somerset proved tough for the Corfe Mullen youngster as he dropped down to 32nd place. Tristan Robbins (Cardiff JIF) won the stage and the overall race. It was a good learning experience for Fielding as he looks to make the transition from track to road. “It wasn’t the best day, I got dropped on the third climb and was trying to keep the time gap to a minimum. It was a good learning experience and I know where I need to improve” he commented. The Mendips race is part of the national junior series with the next round, the Hog Hill GP in Essex on April 21st .


• Poole Wheelers veteran, Terry Icke will start as favourite for this Saturdays 70th anniversary Crabwood CC 10 mile time trial on the Ringwood- Sopley course. Ray Hughes (Clarence Wheelers) should make a race of it and will be warmed up. Hughes gets proceedings underway at 15:00; riding the tandem event with stoker Wendy Pails (Farnborough& Camb) Simon McLaughlin (BJW) & Mark Valentine (PW) lead the field in the two-up race. The Saturday afternoon event has been poorly supported with just 19 riders entering the solo race & 10 pairs in the two-up. The following days EDCA 24 has fared no better attracting just 23 entrants, compare this to last weekend’s Nelson Wheelers 50 event in Yorkshire, with 144 riders facing the timekeeper

MORE than a minute separated New Forest Cycling Club’s Gary Lock from VC St Raphael challenger Andy Rivett in a tough 25-mile time trial in bright and cold conditions on Sunday.
It was the second time this season that Lymington’s Lock has secured a win over Bishopstoke-based Rivett in a New Forest CC test.
On a chill morning Lock covered the convoluted course, which starts and finishes at Holmsley, in a rapid 1hr 41secs to beat Rivett by a full minute and 11 seconds.
Lock’s clubmate Ben Boardman, who is also finding good early season form, took third place with 1-02-37.
GA Cycles’ pair Gary Allen and Antony Green took fourth and fifth places with 1-03-44 and 1-05-37 respectively.

Ader has two minutes in hand
A3 Cycle Racing Group’s Sebastian Ader won his club’s hilly 10 between Rake and Petersfield in 22-40 beating VC St Raphael’s Simon Berogna into the runner-up slot by 2-05.
However, the gap between second and third places could not be more slender. Berogna beat Poole Wheelers’ Paul Jones’ 24-46 by a single second.
Sotonia CC riders Stuart Martingale and Daniel Edwards finished with times of 25-50 and 27-41.

COURSE DETAILS - P303 CTT Observers may be in attendance along the course


START at drain at end of gravel lay-by opposite Elim Cottage approximately 100 yards north of the Ringwood sign on B3347. Proceed South to Sopley one-way system where LEFT (4.5m) (CARE –some two-way traffic) into Derrit Lane to Bransgore (6.4m). Turn left (CARE – Give Way to traffic coming from the right) on unclassified road from Bransgore to North Kingston. Proceed towards Crow, TAKING CARE at RIGHT TURN (sp Burley 5) to FINISH opposite farm gate 20yds before TP8.

Please take care on this course, the left turns are fairly sharp and there are a few tight bends, particularly in the last mile or two. Please adhere to CTT regulations and pay attention to the rules of the road and show courtesy to all road users. Any rider observed riding in a manner which may jeopardise his or her own safety, the safety of others and the future of the sport will be disqualified and reported to CTT South DC.

Event HQ in the Forest Room at The Elm Tree pub, Hightown Rd, Ringwood BH24 3DY(GR SU 163048). From A31 take the Poulner exit East of Ringwood, turn left from W-bound sliproad into Eastfield Lane, follow South for 1 mile and the Pub is on the left. Please note the Forest Room is on the first floor.
Numbers and signing on will be at the HQ, where numbers may be exchanged after the event for a drink. Please take care when arriving at or leaving the HQ.

From HQ to start is 1.5 miles:- take Crow Lane opposite the HQ to end, turn right, follow to the end where Left (CARE – Give Way) onto B3347, start is 200 yds from junction.
From Finish continue to end, go across staggered x-roads to return to HQ.

- Avon Tyrrell Farm - sharp bend with possible gravel.

Fielding Third at Junior Tour Of Mendips!

Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) took third place on the 64 mile stage 1 of the junior tour of the Mendips. Fielding was part of a four man group that escaped at half distance. The quartet worked well together opening a gap of38 seconds on the bunch. Zac May (Wales Junior Development) won the sprint with all four given the same time. Sundays hilly, 60 mile stage at Chew Stoke, Somerset will see round 1 of the National Junior Series decided.

Bournemouth Track: 2013 Set to be Busy Year!

With 3 out of the last 5 BBC Sports Personalities of the Year being cyclists and multiple Gold medallists in 2012, it is not surprising that the sports popularity at national level is also being reflected at Bournemouth’s Olympic Cycle Track.

Throughout the 2013 summer months the track at Slades Farm Ensbury Park is already booked 5 evenings a week, outstripping the other more established tracks at Portsmouth, Reading, Welwyn and Brighton. Adding to weekly Tuesday evening Track League of competition, there are no fewer than 4 Open Competition meetings scheduled at weekends, only the famous Herne Hill Track in South East London, with a 100 year head start on Bournemouth, has a bigger programme.

Track Cycling is now the dominant as well as most inclusive sport operating at Slades Farm, offering activities for both sexes in an age range from 5 to over 65. Of the local clubs, Bournemouth Arrow and the Poole Wheelers have made regular bookings to provide coaching and training opportunities for the benefit of their members, as well as promoting Open Competitions and Training for the wider cycling community.

Open Coaching Sessions will be provided by Feria Sport and Southern Cycle Coaching, some timed at School Holiday periods while others fill the “Afterschool” slot in term time. Weekday student usage is led by Bournemouth University but a significant number of local schools now book the track to provide their pupils with the challenge that is track cycling, with others travelling from Weymouth and Dorchester.

The Cycling Centre’s own very popular Sunday afternoon Open Rider Accreditation classes will provide novice and experienced riders with the Skills base essential for safe track riding thereby allowing them to progress to higher standard sessions.

Over the winter the Cycling Centre has invested in improved storage facilities and increased the fleet of special Hire Bikes from 21 to 34 to meet the demand. The Centre’s Alan McRae says ”The current limitations on Local Authority Funding is proving a frustration more than a barrier at the moment but there remain many ways in which we can further improve this fantastic facility in time. The investment made by Bournemouth Council and British Cycling in 2011 is providing huge returns. For me the highpoint of 2013 will be the Bournemouth Arrow’s DernyFest and Womens Omnium Competition on 13th July. This is not because it is a showcase of top track cycling competition, which of course it is. More importantly though, it forms part of a 3 day Community Festival organised by the Friends of Slades Farm bringing together music, dance and sport to both show off Slades Farm Open Space and demonstrate what contribution sport can make in bringing the local community together.”

Momentum Cycle Challenge!!!

The Momentum Cycle Challenge is taking place to encourage more people to discover how easy and enjoyable riding a bike can be.
The Challenge is being run by Bournemouth Borough Council, Poole Borough Council, Dorset County Council and Challenge for Change.
Challenge for Change specialises in the development of behaviour change programmes that get more people cycling and run 'Cycle Challenge' programmes around the world. More information on the Momentum Cycle Challenge here

Local Heroes: Another Cycling Storey!

Bournemouth Arrow cycling club old-timer, Dave Moss called him “young Barney Storey” and still does. "Mossy" had been around cycling long enough to spot talent and he liked what he saw as the 12 year old cleaned up at the Poole Park track league on a bike borrowed from the Dorset Cycling Development group. (DCDG).
“It was £3 for a win, £2 for second and a £1 for third, the local fish & chip shop then sponsored the event, it was an absolute money maker for a 12 year old, £9 for the win! All my components in those early days came from prize money.”

Like most kids, Storey’s first love was football but he was mucking about on a mountain bike and was persuaded to join Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers He recorded 30:20 in a club 10 on his first road bike, a Falcon with suntour index gears, a bike on which older Brother Andy would take him into the Purbeck hills for 4 hour rides, “mum & dad would be in major panic mode when we failed to return after an hour!”
He is acutely aware without the availability of facilities and equipment he may never had got so far. “Without the DCDG, I would never have found the track, we were not really well off and my parents would not have bought me a track bike, it was really, really important”. By the time he was 16 Storey was unbeatable at the short distances, especially on his pride and joy, a second-hand Raleigh 531 yellow track bike. “I absolutely loved it and I was getting physically stronger so I could keep up in the endurance races as well. I was doing all the town centre circuit races by now, in my last school boy race I beat James Taylor, that was a penny dropping moment for me, James was a multi-national champion and was winning everything in those days.” A career as a buildings inspector for the local authority beckoned and at 18 there were more attractive options than bike racing. “I kept riding a bike but not very quickly” As well as the track, the road had always appealed to Storey and it was the road that helped him regain his focus. Castle Combe, Thruxton, Goodwood and Barnsfield all contributed to his apprentiship. “Racing at Goodwood, Andy was basically my domestique, Andy was leathering himself and I would try to clean up all the prime’s, if we got a win as well that would pay for the curry on the way home. It was as mercenary as that”.

Andy was very good to me in the local chippers, he could attack all race and set it up for me, it was really important for both of us” “Local Riders, Local Races” had caught up with Barney in Alcudia, Mallorca. Sitting in the lobby of the Vanity Golf hotel he was clearly enjoying talking about the past but already has an eye on the future. The two week endurance camp for the Para cycling tandem pilot was the first step on the long road to Rio 2016. Jason Queally, Craig Maclean and Pete Mitchell are all knocking on the door, competition is as competitive as ever among'st the pilots and this is on his mind as he starts another block of hill efforts that break up a 4 hour ride.

Storey turned 36 on the camp, wife, Dame Sarah, will give birth to the couple’s first child in June, time is moving on…….. Back in 1997/98, a career as a bike rider was at the back of his mind. He had got himself a coach and rode the National track championships at Manchester “I got an almighty kicking but I could see then everything was in front of me. Those guys were going that quick, they can’t be that much better than me, at a time when the quickest sprinter in Britain was going sub 11, anyone can do that now! The Good Friday meeting at Herne Hill in 1999 was another penny dropping moment for Storey. “I got second in the White Hope sprint behind Richard Strawford, that was a big result, people took notice of that” (He was also second the following year) After Sydney 2000 Storey was invited by coach Martin Barrass to train with the sprint squad “The first time in the Gym with Hoy, Queally and Maclean, I was massively intimidated, but they welcomed me in with lots of mickey taking.” That was as good as it got for Storey, honest self-assessment and a realisation of his ceiling, “I thought I could be that fast but did not know how I was going to do it” In late 2001 he switched to riding as a Tandem Pilot on the Para-cycling squad. A European title with stoker Rob Allen, secured funding for the following year, so Storey resigned his job and moved to Manchester to train full time. Athens 2004 was a learning exercise as much as anything, 2 gold’s followed in Beijing with Anthony Kappes and a gold and silver in London with Neil Fachie. He has no regrets; it was the “right decision” to switch squads. “I still think there is more in me, I can definitely get physically better, a better all-round bike rider, the one thing I have learnt is not to plan 4 years in advance, the front of your mind should always be your next race that is ultimately what you will get judged on. I absolutely love riding my bike, the older i get the more i appreciate it, it’s better than working for a living.” There will be no return to Building control that’s for sure, coaching is an obvious pathway and something he is already pursuing. “As athlete’s you have to take a good look at yourself, asked if your career ends tomorrow would you be happy with what you have done, if the answer is yes then good, if it’s no then you have either wasted an opportunity or been unlucky. I have been very lucky”

*Bournemouth Jubilee club coach John Fear had a huge influence on Barney's introduction to cycling. Like club stalwarts up and down the country, Fear worked tirelessly, turning up for coaching sessions, often in the pouring rain, setting up and putting the bikes away. "A thankless task" says Barney.

Postscript: In April 2013 Barney lost his place on the squad and with it his funding.
