• Win with “minimum effort” was the strategy for Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood as the 16 year old added the Southern Region Circuit race championships to his growing list of victories. He has already won the Southern junior road race title. “This is only Stephenson’s second year of racing and his priority as a first year junior is to learn how to race.” said Alan Mcrae, Stephenson’s vastly experienced coach. Mcrae went on to say: “His first target race is the Junior RR Champs in Co Durham on July 3rd. He then has a break, with a second target at the end of August, the Junior Track Champs, Will is riding the distance events. Then 2 days later the Junior Tour of Wales.

The arrow youngster is a great prospect and will get stronger with more racing in his legs. However two punctures in the last three races have hampered his progress, with no neutral service at the Mike Rutty Memorial RR in Bristol it was "end of race"!! “I have a lot of races to fit around the exams” said Will. (Mcrae worked with Garmin –Cervelo professional, Dan Lloyd, early in his career)

MORETON VILLAGE EVENING SERIES 09/06/2011
Proving unstoppable in the sprint, Jason Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) powered his way to another comfortable victory at Moreton village, down in Dorset. Run under The League International rules with a handicap format, the scratch group relentlessly chased down the groups in front.

The race came together with three laps of the flat, open road circuit left. All attempts to make a break came to nothing and with a lap to go everyone knew what was coming.

In previous weeks Eastwood has had help from teammates. He was on his own this evening but the result was the same. Experienced roadman/sprinter Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) took second place with Julian Thacker (VC ST Raphael) third for the second week running.

More than 300 riders were in action at Crow Hill near Ringwood in round 3 of the Southern Area XC MTB Series. Whilst Steven James (Hargroves Cycles) won the elite men’s race, local interest was centered on the veteran’s event. However things did not go smoothly for the home riders. In- form Darren Shepherd (Primera) suffered a puncture and had to carry his bike to the finish

and early leader Mark Chadbourne (ridebike.co.uk) had the equivalent on his tubeless tyres. Simon Willats of the ride team did salvage some local pride with 4th place.

In the supporting races, James Horton (Primera) won the sport event, leading from start to finish.

Stuart King (ride bike) was pleased to finish 3rd in the masters race. King had spent much of the race in 2nd place before being overtaken on the last lap.

• . Julia Shaw (drag2zero) from Bramshaw in the New Forest won her fourth National 25 mile Time Trial title. Shaw successfully defended her crown on a windswept course in Devon. She has already won the 10 mile title and is aiming to be selected for the World Championships in Copenhagen in September.

Southern Area XC MTB Round 3

Crow Hill near Ringwood was the venue for round 3 of the Southern Area XC MTB Series (SAMS). A full days racing for all categories was on offer, with the elite men last off at 2pm.That lack of rain this spring had left the course rock hard, producing some fast racing that kicked up plenty of dust. Ironically the rain started to fall as the day wore on but it was not enough to dampen the trails.

Steven James (Hargroves Cycles) was at the head of affairs right from the gun. Pedalon.co.uk rider, Adrian Lansley off number 1, led briefly on the first of 5 4 mile laps. James however was never far away as the pair built up a lead on the chasing pack. Tim Dunford (AW Cycles.co.uk) managed to pull away from a small knot of riders who would scrap for the minor placings.

James always looked in control and steadily rode away from Lansley who held on for a well deserved 2nd place with Dunford 3rd

Maxine Filby (Baines Racing Silverstone cycles) was a comfortable winner of the Elite Female race. Finishing almost 9 minutes clear of Jo Munden (Team Cycle Kingdom) with Emma Bradley (WXC Mountain Bike Team UK) 3RD

"One More Cup of Coffee for the Road"

Rode with Daniel Lloyd (Garmin-Cervelo) for a couple of hours this week. He said it was a recovery ride but i am sure there was a little bit of level 2 in there! (You can take the cyclist out of the local chain gang but.....). Daniel was looking as lean as i have ever seen him, his calves were "well cut" i was more than a little envious! Honest as always, Dan is not completely happy with his form. He is certainly under raced, having had a months paternity leave after the birth of his son Jude.

He will start the Criterium du Dauphine in France on Sunday June 5th. The traditional Tour de France appetiser is always a good test of form for the big guns. Daniel rode the Dauphine last year but had only just finished the Giro, this year he will be more rested. Although a warm up for the "Tour" Lloyd does not expect a ride this year. He talks of the Tour of Poland,The Eneco tour and the National RR Championships. A quiet July, a busy August and possibly the Vuelta a Espana, are all on the agenda. We stop for coffee in the Hampshire market town of Ringwood, one of us has cake with the coffee! Dan picks up the tab and turns a few heads in his Garmin-Cervelo kit as he waits at the counter. With one eye on a contract for next season Daniel Lloyd will be looking to impress with some solid performances in the coming months. Perhaps this was on his mind as he "nailed it" on the 10 mile dash back into Bournemouth.

Local Cycling News/ Weekly round up

Shaun Amor (UK Biking) won race 3 in the Moreton Evening series. A field of 49 lined up for the 30 mile race on the fast flat circuit. The small scratch group failed to catch the supposedly slower groups in front leaving the race wide open. A crash on the final run in to the finish brought down a dozen or so riders. Nothing too serious, mostly road rash. Dave Hicks (BJW) was taken to Dorchester Hospital in an ambulance and treated for facial injuries, and later released.

Dave commented “Because the scratch group never caught us, the race was not stretched out enough on the last lap; it was too congested in the home straight. A rider came across from my left and clipped my front wheel. This obviously resulted in the crash. I hit the road head first, very quickly. Someone said riders went over me but I don’t remember” Shaun Amor avoided the carnage behind to take his first win on the road, much to the delight of the small UK BIKING team. First round winner, Bryce Riglar (cc WEYMOUTH) and Rob Koppenhol (DRR) took second & third place.

Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) took a solo victory in round 4 of the 13 week series. Attacking with just over a mile to go, Gray quickly got a gap. The bunch hesitated and with teammates Jason Eastwood and Stuart Bowers policing things, Gray was never challenged. Fifty riders had started in bright evening sunshine, going off in four handicap groups. The scratch group had brought the race together with four 3 mile laps left and no one was going anywhere. As everyone one settled down for the expected sprint Gray seized his chance. The National U23 Cyclo-Cross Champion is in good form as he concentrates on the road this summer and is hoping to move to the Continent later in the season. Stuart Bowers commented; Its the best place to get away, in the lane, before the main road, if you have a bit of cornering speed you've got 10 metres on everyone, i knew he was going to stay away" Will Stenphenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) was riding strongly but punctured, he rejoined th race and got involved in the sprint for the minor placings.

Jason Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) won the sprint for 2nd with Julian Thacker (VC ST RAPHAEL) 3RD. Stuart Bowers was originally placed 3rd giving the Hargroves team a clean sweep but photographs later showed Thacker had edged it.

• Steven Whitewick (UTAG-YAMAHA) set a new course record for the 32 mile New Forest Time Trial. Whitewick flew round the sporting course in 1.11.15 to win by 2 minutes from Russell Kober (Hainault RC). Ringwood based triathlete, James Gilfillan (Team Feat) rode well to finish in third spot. Newly crowned National 10 mile Champion, Julia Shaw (Drag2Zero) won the ladies race and placed 8th overall. This weekend Shaw defends her title at the 25 mile distance. Shaw is the favourite to win the Blue Riband event.
Andy Bryson (Sotonia cc, in his first year of time trialling, rode well to finish 5th with 1.16.37, on the sporting New Forest course.

Ellie Gilham has been selected to represent England South in the inter regional road race championships in early July. Ellie has been in good form this year consistently placing at the Mountbatten circuit races in Portsmouth and she recently popped up at Moreton where she looked very comfortable in the bunch. Ellie was disappointed to find out the Championships were in Perth ,Scotland, not Perth, Australia!

• Mountain Bike Racing returns to Crow Hill, Ringwood this weekend. The third round of the Southern XC series includes racing for all categories. First race is off at 09.45. Mark Chadbourne (Ridebike.co.uk) is hoping to challenge both Darren Shepherd (Primera) & Paul Hopkins (Merida) "I am over a recent chest infection and have got my strenghth back"
