Regional Championships,Ashton Takes Southern Title!

Kimberley Ashton (Casp Racing) deservedly won the southern region road race champs on the tough Owslebury circuit in Hampshire. The 27 year old channel islander was clearly the strongest, first breaking away from the field then dispatching her four breakaway companions in the 52 mile race. Corrinne Clark (Ride 24/7) made the move that decided things, Ashton & Gillian Taylor (Fusion RT/Gear Club Bike Science) followed Clark . Olympic development programme (ODP) rider Rebbecca Raybould (Poole Wheelers) was expecting a move and used her track speed to get across and it was game over bar four! Taylor was the first to go, dropping off the back, the hills and the pace set by Ashton proving too much. Ashton applied the pressure again to get rid of Clark before Raybould inevitably cracked leaving Ashton to enjoy a solitary final lap. Clark bravely fought her way back to Raybould, then dropped the 17 year old to take the silver medal. The luckless Hayley Preston unshipped her chain as the flag dropped and spent a lonely couple of laps chasing before throwing in the towel.

Kimberley Ashton “I felt pretty strong, the first few laps I thought there is gonna be some eager beavers around so I just let them crack on with setting the pace, halfway through I knew it get a bit sapping so then it would be time to make a move. Each time up the main hill people were dropping off. The course suits me its tough,draining. The four of us were working well, Gillian (Taylor) stopped working, she was tired, so we got rid of her on the hills, I thought right, its time to move. I was always looking behind, I am very pleased,I don’t win much on the road,back home we race with the guys and its costly getting to the UK”

Corrinne Clark “Very pleased, I will settle for second, very happy considering it is only my second road race. Kimberley was doing loads of work, she is a machine! I got dropped but fought my way back to Rebbeca(Raybould) Kim had gone, I attacked and just kept going”

Rebbecca Raybould “I just died at the end! We got away pretty early, three went off and I jumped across, I thought a group would go. I wanted to race to win really but the pace & distance caught me out I did not really have the legs, Kimberley was just so strong, she never looked tired, she was always talking, we were just rolling through struggling”

Southern Region Champs, Stockdale Wins in Hampshire

Ben Stockdale (Sport grub Kuota) won the Southern Region road race title, showboating to victory after seeing off the challenge of Tristan Robbins (Madison Genesis). Stockdale, who had a dig in the first few miles, had forged ahead with Robbins after 70 of 84 miles, taking the race to the Madison Genesis rider on the climb of Lane End Down. The pair was joined by James Phillips (Dream Cycling RT) & Will Bjergfelt (Sport grub Kuota) with two 7.5 mile laps remaining.

The numerical advantage was with the Sport Grub boys along with the pressure of expectation. However, if there was any pressure it did not show as they took turns to attack the tiring Robbins. “Go Stockers, Go” shouted Bjergfelt as Stockdale got the gap on Belmore Lane. Never looking back the 25 year old from Lower Swell, Gloucestershire powered away and was able to relax and enjoy the moment. Former two-time “Divs” winner Will Bjergfelt settled for third place behind winter training partner Robbins , the youngster holding off the in-form “Bjergy” in the sprint for the line.

Bjergfelt, Colin Parry (Ride 24/7) Malcolm Dixon, Craig Wallduck (Dream Cycling RT) & Mitch Webber (Pedal Heaven RT) had opened up a small gap on lap four and when former UK ironman triathlon champion, Daniel Halksworth (Velo Sport Jersey) fought his way up to the break, alarm bells were ringing in the bunch.

One lap later, again on Lane end, it was Stockdale who stretched the bunch out, making contact with the leaders over the top. Robbins had followed the move and the break swelled to ten with Andrew Syme (Primera-sport.com) the last to get on.. The rolling Hampshire course based around the village of Owslebury (pronounced Ozzleberry) continually asks questions which the dwindling bunch found increasingly difficult to answer. Up ahead Stockdale had the answer, testing the legs of Robbins before his teammate joined and changed the odds.

Ben Stockdale “Well, it was a hard day out, a very tough circuit, pretty much going up and down all day. We had a chat this morning, thought we would go early but it seemed to take quite a while, when it came down to the four of us, it was only a matter of time really before one of us got away, it was just which one. When I got to that final corner I knew if I had a gap that would be it”

Tristan Robbins “It was a long race, I decided to save energy for the first bit then try to jump across to the break, then jump out of the break. I was suffering quite a lot when Ben attacked on the climb, I was working hard. Having been broken I was trying to save what I could to try and get second and I was pleased to get the sprint”

Will Bjergfelt “I had the early break covered but I was also conscious Ben would come across at some point so I did not want to work with it or commit to it, I did not want to burn all my matches. You can’t mess it up really When there is two of you in the break you can’t mess it up, it comes back to the team, I have won it twice before, it is nice for Ben to win it”


James Phillips “Bloody hard, I was in the early break doing a lot of work, we got caught which was frustrating, I attacked again and only Will (Bjergfelt) came with me, he said he would not work with me, fair enough,Ben was up the road, so I put my head down Will did contribute when the bunch closed and we caught the two leaders. These boys are doing these mile week in, week out I did not really have the legs on the last lap I could not go with the attacks. It is a tough course, I like it nice and hard, it drops the people hanging on”

Colin Parry “All the organisation went out of the group when Ben & Tristan went away, it was a case of trying to salvage a top ten place”

The championships were a joint promotion from Portsmouth North End CC & Fareham Wheelers, with the Women & Juniors starting at 09:30 and the seniors off at 13.00 it was a long hard day for commisaires and marshalls alike, something Ben Stockdale thanked everyone involved with in his acceptance speech.

Pearl Izumi Tour Series, First Blood to One Pro!

ONE Pro Cycling made a winning debut in the Pearl Izumi Tour Series, taking maximum points from the Ryde double header opening round.
The Pearl Izumi Tour Series visited the Isle of Wight for the first time, with the sea front town of Ryde hosting a Team Time Trial and circuit race, ONE Pro Cycling winning both events, to lead the Pearl Izumi Tour Series by two points from Madison Genesis after Round One.
On a circuit still wet from a morning of heavy rain, ONE Pro Cycling took the win in the opening Team Trial, consisting of two laps of the 1.3km town centre circuit with a time of 3:44.504, four seconds quicker than Madison Genesis with Pedal Heaven in third, their best ever result in the Series.

In the following circuit race, ONE Pro Cycling, now wearing the red and white Series leader jerseys, placed all five of their riders in the chasing group behind breakaway winner Tom Scully with much of the action taking place on the climb of Union Street, tackled 35 times.

Throughout the race ONE Pro, along with NFTO and Madison Genesis were active at the front, with the former two chasing first Tom Stewart and then Kiwi Scully, as the Madison Genesis riders took the race, with its new time based format, to the other teams.

Individually Madison Genesis' Commonwealth Games Champion Scully took the race win, with teammate Stewart leading much of the race to sweep up the intermediate sprints and pull on the Chain Reaction Cycles Points Jersey.
Highlights form Ryde will be shown on ITV4 at 2000 on Friday 15 May, with a repeat at 1045 on Saturday 16 May.
Round Two of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series takes place in Redditch on Tuesday 19 May at 1930, and features the opening round of the women's Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series at 1800.

Ryde Town Criterium, A Win for Stainton-Ellis! Report, Results

George Stainton-Ellis (ASL Projects RT ) won the Ryde Town Criterium, sprinting from the front along the Esplanade . The 45 minute + 5 lap race on the Isle of Wight was the warm up race for the first round of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series and just like the main event; it was the climb up Union Street that shaped the race.

Harvey Morcombe (Fareham Wheelers) stretched the field out early on as a select group of ten formed but it was Andy Shackel (Team Wiggle) who did the damage. Pulling away on the hill, first with Kieran Page (Wightlink/LCM RT) and then going alone, Shackel opened a ten second gap which started to grow. The Team Wiggle man settled into TT mode and looked comfortable on the wet roads as the chasers looked at each other and lapped riders were pulled from the race.

It was looking good for Shackel but Adam Moore (ASL Projects RT) & Charlie Leech (Soton Uni CC) got the pursuit organised, the gap closed and with three to go the catch was made. Twenty three times up Union Street had sapped the strength but Stainton-Ellis had just enough to hold off Joe Barry (Performance Cycles) and “Man of the Match” Shackel

George Stainton-Ellis “Andy did a great effort, I did not have it too chase, so we worked a little bit to bring it all together, we were all a bit tired on the hill by the end and I managed to get in there for the sprint. It crossed my mind to jump across to Andy but then I went up the hill again and I realised that it probably would not work for me"

Andy Shackel “ Its always nice with a crowd it makes a big difference, I am not a climber but they were definitely helping, It was hard out there on my own although Keiran made life a bit easier, it was a bit of a gamble, it did not quite pay off but I am still happy that I managed to hang in there."
