Moreton 12, Amor Wins, Eastwood Wins Again!

Shaun Amor (UK-BIKING) won the final round of the Moreton village series as Jay Eastwood (Primera-sports .com) won the overall for the fourth consecutive year Eastwood, though, has not had it all his own way this time round, winning just three races, missing two and suffering mechanical problems. Stuart Bowers (Hargroves Cycles) & Calum Croft (Mud, Sweat ‘Gears) both got the better of the Primera man in the sprint, proving he is beatable. Barnaby Cox (Gillingham & Dist Wh), Steve & Paul Dring (Echelon-Rotor) & James Horton (Cannondale) also denied Eastwood wins. He remains the man to beat however. This year’s series victory coming by virtue of his four second places as much as his three victories, which have taken his total wins in the series so far to 21. The last evening of the series saw the handicapper in a benevolent mood and the gap to the “greens” was never going to be closed. At the bell there advantage was still over a minute and we were guaranteed another new winner. It was, perhaps, fitting that a UK-BIKING rider won the last race and Amor shouted his delight as he crossed the line in a keenly contested sprint.

This TLI series has been a great success and has shown there is a demand for affordable, sign-on the line, no-nonsense racing in Dorset. The full fields from week one enabled the organisers, Steve Dring & Richard Lang to donate £700 to the St Johns Ambulance who provide first aid cover for the races. A new village hall will be built in time for next year’s series, although I suspect the parish councillors were thinking more of the monthly jumble sale than the bike racing.

Rob Jefferies Memorial Track Meet, Entry on the Line available.

Entry on the line is still available for the Rob Jefferies Memorial in all categories. Writes organiser Gordon Skillen..... The race is on Sunday 28th July, with events starting at 1pm. Sign on is from 11.30, so get down early to ensure one of the remaining places on the start list. The cost is £15 for seniors, £10 for youths.

Just to remind everybody, the race has a £600 prize fund and has categories for Elite (E/1/2/3/4), for club riders (3/4) as well as seperate races for both u16/14 boys and girls. The feature race, the Rob Jefferies Memorial Race is a 25km points race with a total prize fund of £200, including primes for every one of the sprint laps. The support race in the E/1/2/3/4 category, The Alan Spencer Devil has a prize fund of £100.

In the support categories, for 3/4 category riders, the series of events, including a scratch race, a roadman's pursuit and a devil, carries a £90 prize fund. It culminates in the 10km Eddie Beck Memorial race, also a points race and also with prizes offered for each of the sprint laps.

And last but not least comes the junior categories, with seperate races for u16/u14 boys and girls and with a total prize fund of £180 and prizes for the sprint laps of the points race finale. The girls races will be accepting entries for first and second year junior riders as well as seniors up to cat 2.

And if you can't ride, please come along and join in the fun. Spectators are more than welcome. We have music, we have food, we have everything you need for an afternoon spent watching some of the country's top riders in action.

From Moreton to Monkey World

Mud, Seat 'n' Gears roadie Calum Croft, fresh from winning the latest round of the Moreton Tli series decided to have another go at time trialling on the P459, otherwise known as the Monkey World course as it travels around the outside of the world famous ape rescue centre. Calum again proved his talent winning in an impressive 22:29 however he almost failed to get in the event after turning up (like several others) late and incurring the wrath, or rather the sarcasm, of time keeper Justin and twenty other riders all pointing to their imaginary watches.

James Horton, another winner at Moreton this season, also decided to join us and put in an impressive time of 22:52 showing some good improvement this year and taking second place. Rounding out the top three and taking a further 10 points in his quest for the club trophy was Steve Pink finishing in a course best of 23:31.

Also worthy of mention were Andrew Jackson who has been consistenly achieving course and personal best over the last four or five weeks and did so again tonight, and Lizzie Reynolds who took a big chunk off of her PB and getting some well deserved reward for all her hard work of late. Chapeau to both!

Bournemouth Arrow/Raymond Brown Track League 12

Another absorbing evening’s racing at Bournemouth track started with a 6 lap youth scratch race, a competitive affair won by Charley Calvert (BACC). Calvert, who also took the elimination race, rides aggressively and from the front. John Heffernan (New Forest CC) sprinted to victory in a close B group 8 lap scratch before league leader Gawain Bailey (Performance Cycles) took the A group scratch. Bailey went alone 3 laps out and just hung on. Adama Newlove (Fareham Wheelers) took advantage of Ellie Gilham not paying attention to win an elimination race. Gilham had looked in control but was hindmost as Newlove & Aisha Fenwick (Poole Wheelers) concentrated. Gareth Rose (BACC) took the first sprint in a 16 lap point’s race, then stayed away till the finish. Rose had enough in hand to sit up in the home straight and coast over the line. Alex Jolliffe (Poole Wh) & Dave Gilham (BACC) escaped early in the A group 16 lap scratch race. Fielding & Brendan Drewett (Fareham Wh) joined them before Jolliffe attacked in the back straight, Fielding held on but as Gilham and Drewett faded, up popped Bailey for a few more league points. Sam Clark put in a heroic effort in a 6 lap youth block handicap to hold off the bigger boys! Clark lunged for the line to cheers from the impartial judges as Calvert closed in. Lucy Edmunds (BACC) worked hard for her win in another exciting block handicap. It was Bailey again in the A group 20 lap points race. Fielding started brightly taking the first two sprints but seemed to lose interest, his early morning training session taking its toll perhaps. Eve Jefferies (Poole Wh) held off the charging Calvert to win a 3 lap handicap sprint as the light started to fail. The final race, a 15km scratch started with a bang. Fielding attacked from the gun and took a lap inside five. He was still smarting from his disqualification in the scratch the week before and responded in style. Bailey, Gilham, Ollie Hitchens (PHR), Steve Moss (BACC),Roland Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk) and Alex Jolliffe reacted quickly, stealing a lap on the fracturing bunch, however Fielding had attached himself on the back of the move, giving him two. The action had decimated the field, giving the judges a problem, solved by pulling riders out. Jolliffe and Tilley got half a lap, Tilley faded, Bailey tried late on, Fielding had it covered but probably owes teammate Hitchens a cold lemonade, it was breathless thirsty work!
